Why won't Apple let us sync out iPods/iPhones over Wi-Fi?

Recommended Posts

I own a iPod Classic 160gb and I use it for my car. Now, I would LOVE the wifi feature the zune has, but the thing is, i love my ipod more.

For those who keep there zune in there car, you cant charge it in your car unless you get a "cig lighter to usb" thing and then plug in your zune usb cable.

Also, for Sound, you use an AUX Cable, or FM Transmitter.

I find all that as a mess. Me, I have a iPod Ready Deck. Came with cable. Thats what I LOVE about the iPods. They are so widely used and known that even Stereo companys are making docks and cable for the iPod that come with there products.

I got a deck put in that was iPod Ready and came witht he cable. Now, my iPod is charged all the time and is played in best soudn quality. Better then FM Transmitter or Aux Cable.

Now if I had wifi syncing, I woudl be set.

So I would love these feature if it ever came out.

You find two cables to be a mess?

Also, the iPod generally will not provide better sound quality than a Zune. Sound quality is determined primarily by the songs, anyway. You aren't getting the best sound quality possible with the iPod or Zune unless all your music is ripped at a very high bit rate, such as 320 kbps.

In a car? Yes. A cigarette lighter is mostly located somewhere in the middle where as your aux cable is mostly somewhere in the dashboard. This means the cables have to go a long way to reach the device leaving a clutter behind.

Wifi is probably too slow, and it drains the battery fairly quickly. I always found it more interesting that Apple doesn't let people sync their iPhones over Bluetooth though, but only through iTunes.

As far as the Zune vs iPods:

I would get a HD-based Zune over an iPod Classic at this point - the Zune's UI is so much nicer looking than the iPod's, and unlike how Apple handles the upgrades on the Touch, they actually offer major FW updates for free. Another thing I find annoying with the newer iPods (like my Touch), is that Apple changed the dock connector, so that perfectly fine car adapter that works with my 5g iPod, but not my Touch or an iPod Classic, the dock connector shouldn't change, but Apple saw an easy way to nickle and time people.

As far has flash-based players goes, I still like the Touch more than other ones I've seen, even though Safari still crashes.

Do not question Steve Jobs. He knows what you need more than you do.

Believe it or not, there's some truth to this, LOL.

Apple tends to show us things we never knew we wanted. It's an unorthodox strategy, but it seems to work very well.

Think of the reduction in the market for aftermarket (licensed) cables if they did that. All those licensing dollars that wouldn't be rolling in...

You'll always need a cable to charge it so that's not the main reason for sure.

I don't know. Apple wants me to believe I don't need FireWire or optical drives, yet I do. They also want me to believe that iPhone is perfect as is and will not need to be jailbroken, yet this isn't true, either.

Ssshhhhh!! Not so loud! You'll sour the Kool-Aid!

And you'll just make HIM angry, and I hate when he gets angry. He'll put me in the "funroom" again. And I don't want to go back in there!!!! No nom-noms or delicious cakes in there at all!

:ike:

I have it on my Zune and I find it's a great feature. My dock is on the 3rd floor of my house and when I'm heading to the gym and I want to sync get a few new songs rather than get out of my car run up 3 stories and sync I can just sync from right there grab the songs and go.

So you're going to the gym to exercise, but you're too lazy to run up a couple steps?

Did you happen to read the post directly above yours? That is a perfect example of why its useful.

Yes, I did read it. I'm not going to leave my expensive device in my car where it can get stolen. ;)

I don't know. Apple wants me to believe I don't need FireWire or optical drives, yet I do.

And where did you get that idea? Is it because one of their laptops doesn't have Firewire? Or because another model doesn't include an optical drive?

This kind of reminds of that other company who 10 years ago stopped using floppy disk drives and instead included WiFi as standard, years before everyone else. Oh, I'm sorry, that was Apple too.

Two of their laptops don't offer FireWire. And it's the beginning of a trend. I wouldn't be surprised if the next iMac update leaves it out, too. Apple believes consumers don't need FireWire. Steve Jobs has stated that most consumer products now use USB 2 instead of FireWire. And Steve also believes that most people won't miss their optical drive.

Apple abandoning the floppy disk in favor of USB is different, because USB was a very viable alternative to floppy disks. But there is no viable alternative to FireWire for its uses, nor is there a viable alternative to an optical drive yet.

Huh? You are aware that Bluetooth is far, far slower than wifi, right? Bluetooth wouldn't be a whole lot better on battery life either, especially considering that it would have to be active much longer to transfer the same files.

    • The blatant anti-competitive nature of the EU's DMA rules are obscenely IRONIC and wholly damaging to upwards innovations from within the EU. Why?! Because it penalizes marketplace competitors whom the users CHOOSE to sign contracts with (basically dictating the product management models and strategies whilst handicapping popular marketplace choices) all under the guise of 'fair competition' and assuring continued operations. The only beneficiary (as the DMA is written and applied) are the toxic wannabes with whom most consumers have chosen to NOT do business with! What kind of bass-ackwards nonsense is that?! Not everyone in the marketplace that's lower-ranked deserves some sort of advantage whilst being otherwise garbage and toxic. Ugh, so dumb.
    • Assetto Corsa Competizione, House Flipper 2, and more join Xbox Free Play Days by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe There is a brand-new Free Play Days offer available to Xbox players, giving them a chance to try out a new selection of games over the weekend. Microsoft's latest promotion brings in three games for Xbox players to try out, and they are House Flipper 2, Blades of Fire, and Assetto Corsa Competizione. Unlike in recent weeks, no games from this selection are being offered without a Game Pass subscription this time. This means only Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members can jump into the three titles, even if they are single-player. From the trio, House Flipper 2 is for simulation fans. The title lets you buy run-down properties, renovate them, and sell them for a profit. A sandbox mode even lets you build houses from scratch too. Next, Blades of Fire lands as a fantasy adventure that combines metroidvania exploration with punishing combat. One unique aspect is that instead of finding loot, you'll be physically forging your own weapons. Lastly, we go back to simulators with Assetto Corsa Competizione, with the hit racing title offering a hardcore, highly competitive racing game focused entirely on GT3 and GT4 class cars. Everything from the tracks and tire physics to the dynamic weather conditions are focused on giving players an authentic driving experience. Here are the announced games and the platforms they are available to play on: House Flipper 2 (Xbox Series X|S) Blades of Fire (Xbox Series X|S) Assetto Corsa Competizione (Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One) To easily find the titles on Xbox consoles, first head to the Store, and then in the sidebar, find the Home section. In there, open the Subscriptions tab. All the games from the Free Play Days collection will show up in this section for quick access. This week's Free Play Days promotions will end on Sunday, June 28, at 11:59 pm PT.
    • Just what I wanted, an even bigger bomb in my Chinese spy phone.
    • Be sure to toss in a couple tacos to sweeten the deal, no one else sells better bridges!
    • Online didn't launch until October of 2013. So no one could play it. Even then there were issues.
