Im guessing im using 1.8 as i didnt even know anything about this. What is the difference between the two, i use my mac for editing photos before i give them to clients/upload them. Am i using the right profile??

A gamma of 2.2 is what PCs use by default I believe, it is a bit darker in terms of shadows (someone who is a professional photographer that knows gamma settings should be able to explain this).

2.2 because it looks more professional on the screen.

I'm not sure how brightness levels can look more "professional."

Please explain.

Hell, maybe Apple agrees with you. See here:

No more 1.8 default in Snow Leopard.
