Endless restart

I just restarted my computer and can't seem to boot into Windows anymore. When it reached the logon screen it says Stage 3 of 3 of an update is starting and to not power off the computer. Ok, so I wait. The percentage does not even budge 0% and suddenly it says "Shutting Down." Ok, let it shut down, maybe it was a minor bug. It starts doing the same thing again and shutting down, over and over again.

What's wrong with my computer and what can I do to fix it? I actually forgot how to get into safe mode and since I turned off System Restore, what can I do in Safe Mode?

Note: I'm on Neowin from my tabletPC.

EDIT: I remembered how to get into Safe Mode (with F8) but don't know what to do next.

that just happened to me yesterday the exact same thing ! in another rig

insert vista disc and use repair option [the link in the corner ]

then use system restore and get to any earlier point .

that what i did the rig is running fine since then , i am not so sure about the cause tho .

My first guess is that the nForce and GeForce drivers I updated caused this since that was the last thing I did before restarting. But then again, I haven't shut down my computer for days (just placed it in sleep mode), so it could have been anything that I did in the past 4 days...:cry:

I'm currently running a memory diagnostics test then I'll System Restore it.

No. I had about 3 restore points but they were of the same day. After trying each one of them, the problem continued. I reformatted, installed everything and I don't see the same problem. Perhaps some sort of bug in Windows Update.

I have this exact problem. I got home from work and my PC was in endless boot. It always stops on update 3 of 3, which it never get passed 0% done, and shuts down.

I've tried repairing, but it doesn't help, although the log states it fixed a problem with tcpip.

I whish I knew which update caused this, but it's impossible to see until I get into Vista.

Reinstalling is just a horrible option, as this is the first time I've had problems since I installed Vista right after MSDN got it the first time.

Can you give me your computer specs? Is it Vista x86 or Vista x64?

As a suggestion for if you run into this problem again, try a repair install of Windows instead if all else fails. It will just copy over your "WINDOWS" folder, and you won't lose any data at all.

Vista won't reinstall over my old installation as it claims there is not enough disk space. Which is just bs, as I have many tens of GB left on the drive. Vista sees only 5GB available.

Yes, blame Microsoft THEN ask for specs. It could very well be a video or sound driver causing it.

OP: Posting your computer specs would help to determine if it is a problem like that. There were a number of bad audio drivers that caused this problem when SP1 came out.

Until you find that Windows Update has installed the same updates in the same order leading again to the same problem...

I would assume the person in question would at the very least do some research after reinstalling Windows to find out which update caused the problem in the first place...

Reformatting doesnt always fix the problem... To me, its just like starting over fresh.

Fixing a problem is "Oh my RAM doesnt work.... oops I forgot to push it in all the way."

"My remote doesnt work... I'll change the batteries."

"My remote doesnt work, I'll go and buy another one" is like reformatting.

Anyway, since this happened to multiple users, its a Windows Update problem. I updated my computer 2 days ago and I dont have this problem. Maybe something was released today and its causing it.

Do you remember what kinds of updates you installed? Any optional updates? Driver updates via Windows Update?

This is for problem prevention. ;)

BTW asking for specs is useless in this regard. They need to find out which updates triggered the problem.

      Hello, While ~104 GB of space may seem generous (at least compared to other e-readers which have 8-32GB), I feel at this price point the device should have a Micro SDXC card slot for expansion, particularly if it allows audio books to be installed and played.       Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth).       I still use HexChat! Not really as ancient as the 1994 AutoCAD above my post, but I have never found anything better to replace it. Yes we still operate an IRC server https://www.neowin.net/irc/ 😛

      At work we still have a couple of people that use a version of AutoCAD LT purchased in 1994. This predates Windows 95 and works fine on versions of Windows up to XP. Its long since run in an locked down isolated XP VM, accessible via RDP. I did install LibreCAD for them, however they said it was just too different to get to grips with. In all fairness one of them is now 75 and the other is almost 60.
