ASPI layer messing up in Nero

Question

Sorry title should be "Aspi and not ATAPI" oops! Even I mess up sometimes

Ok this has been discussed to death in the forums, I looked at some of the older threads and it doesn't seem to have help.

I switch the IDE cable betw my CD-ROM and CDRW drives since I don't have enough IDE channels which I think is why this problem started. I can't so much as burn a CD w/o taking up 100% of the CPU resources and getting a coaster.

Used Aspi check and it gave me a red window saying not properly installed. Fine so I've used the Aspi v4.70 from Adapted and installed it on the system. Rebooted. Got the "green everything okay Window". I start up Nero, get a coaster.

After that didn't work I went to the Nero side, got their wnaspi32.dll file and poped it in the directory. Burn another CD and get another coaster. Used the ASPI check file and got the "Red window" again.

WTF? What gives and how do I fix it?

go online and look for an aspi destroyer or remover. i had to do the exact same thing. use the destroyer to remove all the files, reboot, then re-install the aspi layer.

should work fine

EDIT: look for a program called ForceAspi. it has an option to remove your old aspi layer. do that and then get the new version from adaptec. i think it's 4.71(2) now.

Forceaspi deleted everything. Rebooted.

Then I went to Adapted got the lastest aspi driver and installed it. Got the green window in the aspi check utility. Rebooted and now I get the red window.

winapsi.dll and wowpost.exe (??) are still missing.

I'm tempted to just reinstall Windows right now so I can burn everything and nuke windows. I have a Ghosted image of the HDD takes 1/2 hour to restore.

This is BS, I've just burned 5 coasters today. I'm wiping the drive and restoring from an Image file I'm not wasting anymore time on this. This is just a great example of MS not doing anything right. I should be able to swap the CD drives easily w/o having to worry about DLLs.

I'm done school in 2 weeks. Finishing a paper tonight. After Windows is gone for GOOD! And its not just because of the coasters.

That is a good idea ;)

But why would you swap the CD-RW and CD drive? Cant your CD-RW read CDs?

Yeah, I know its a great idea. ;) If the Macs weren't so expensive ......

MY CD drive is faster reading the CD's than my RW although the CD is 40x and the RW is 32x they should be about the same but they're not. So when I reinstalled windows from the Ghost image it saves about 10 minutes and a bit more reloading programs and documents.

[ this is wayyy of topic but ] I have a new "theory" about my computer use. If the OS I'm using can't help me fix the problem in 1 hour or less, I'm hosing it. I don't know why noobs put up with calling tech support and spending days on the computer. They don't do the same w/ any other appliance. Computers should really be easy and practical. I'm actually trying to burn a Slackware CD and a Beos one since the ISOs are on my HDD. I can do all my wordprocessing and netsurfing and image viewing  in either.

    • Apple iOS 26 beta has a hidden iPhone ringtone by Aditya Tiwari If you're waiting for a new iPhone ringtone to attend your calls, Apple might be baking something for this year. The recently announced iOS 26 update hides a new ringtone for iPhone, discovered in the source code of its first developer beta. Details about the new iPhone ringtone called "ReflectionAlt1-EncoreRemix" were posted on the social media platform X by @8810cfw. It was later re-shared by known Apple leaker @ShrimpApplePro and confirmed by @aaronp613. Looking back a few pages in tech history, Apple's ringtone journey began with the first iPhone in 2007. The Cupertino giant included the classic Marimba ringtone as default, which became a signature for Apple fans. Since then, Apple has continued to release new ringtones and system sounds over the years. However, it exerted more control over iPhone ringtones during the initial years. In addition to the ringtones preloaded on iPhones, Apple also allows users to buy new ringtones from the iTunes Store app. Users can also create their own custom ringtones from an audio file or a song from Apple Music using the GarageBand app. Not just Apple, tech companies have long used ringtones as a way to differentiate their devices from the rest. This includes the fallen warrior, Nokia, and newer competitors like the Google Pixel, which got a new Sound Matters collection last year. The unreleased iPhone ringtone isn't directly available to users in the Settings app as part of the developer beta. It's an alternative version of the Reflection ringtone that has been present on iPhones as the default since 2017. While it's being speculated that the ringtone could be exclusive to this year's iPhone 17 series, it's unclear if Apple will include it in upcoming iOS 26 beta releases. Apple will release the iOS 26 update later this year, featuring a range of new features, including a revamped Photos app, new iPhone wallpapers, and the Vista-like Liquid Glass design. Its public beta is expected to arrive sometime during the next month.
    • This article is about the start menu not the start button
    • This is why I wasn't really annoyed with Windows 8's full screen Start. Since Vista I launch programs by quickly pressing the WIN key and typing first few letters of whatever it is I need. Honestly, my personal equivalent of the Start menu is the WIN+X menu - it truly contains some useful things I do not feel like typing into Search.
    • No and no. Didn't read the article but my take is they should remove the start menu altogether and replace it with Powertoys Run
