iPhone or BB Storm?

Recommended Posts

I currently have a Blackberry Storm, but seem to not to be liking it as much as I thought I would. I've spent a few days getting used to it and its falling short in a number of areas, so I need some help about deciding whether or not to get an iPhone 3G or not!?

I have some question which should balance out my decision making.

Does the iPhone:

? Work as MAS Storage when its plugged into a PC

? Can you navigate around folder structures like you can with MAS Storage

? What is the Gmail experience like

? Can I sync the iphone directly to my PC via USB/Bluetooth

? Can I drag and drop video files to the iphone (can they play xvid/divx (MP4))

? Do contacts use Outlook contact pictures

Also please state 5 pros about the iPhone and 5 cons??

Thanks guys, I look forward to reading your replies.

? Work as MAS Storage when its plugged into a PCyou can use a program called Iphonebrowser, create your own folder called storage and thus drag/drop files into that folder. I regularly take home films from work using my iphoneb>.

? Can you navigate around folder structures like you can with MAS StorYes, with the above program, but be careful of course

? What is the Gmail experienceI download all my emails to my iphone from gmail using the pop account. works wondersrs

? Can I sync the iphone directly to my PC via USB/BluUSB yes yes

? Can I drag and drop video files to the iphone (can they play xvid/divx Via Itunes no problem. I recently took 26 episodes of family guy on holida:)with me :) me :)

Pros:

Best phone ive ever owned

Fast FREE internet access for me in the UK

unlimited access to a massive array of applications

Amazing touch navigation found on no other phone

Your trendy if y:) have one :)

Cons:

not cheap to buy initially

no bluetooth file transfer profile

battery sucks if your using wifi alot (buy docking stations to get around that),

No MMS/forwarding SMS features out of the box (had to jailbreak it to get these features)

Cant use music in your 'ipod' as ringtones.s ringtones.

Thanks guys, I look forward to reading your replies.

That aside, id buy another in a heartbeat.

Have to agree with what was said about the iPhone. Posting from mine on a train in London right now. I won't reanswer your questions as they have already been answered but pro's include:

* functionality / features

* ease of use

* performance & speed of device

* one of the best music players

* app store!!

Con's:

* Price (much better now tho!)

* Infrequently poor 3g coverage

* Battery life with lots of features enabled

* Fear of forgetting to take it anywhere I go ;)

Really, it is the best phone I've ever owned. On my suggestion 3 friends have bought one and they all feel exactly the same! :)

Thanks for the replies, I have another couple of questions. Not ever having owned an ipod/iphone previously and thus never used itunes.

? I wondered how easy it was to get my current music (mp3) and video collection (xvid MP4) onto the iphone? Would I have to import the files into itunes and then let it convert everything into native apple codes??

? If yes to above, is there a way around this?

? With videos, can I import a ripped DVD (MP4 - which I legally own BTW) and import it to itunes again? I assume from what I have read that it needs to be H264 or MP4 to play back!?

? I take it Gmail will work with IMAP via the iphone too, is it push email?

Thanks

Naa, tell it where all your music is stored and it shouldnt modify it (until you move it onto your device). I have 25gigs of music on a shared NAS, we all browse it from itunes.

Well, I play ripped films which I didnt legally downl:)d :)

There are plenty of free 'AVI to IPOD' conversion tools.

I havent enabled push on mine, so I cant vouch for it. I like to only check emails when I want to.

I cant recommend the Iphone enough fella.

I would agree, that there are a couple of lacking features (bluetooth file transfer), but in general is amazing.

Yes apple did create alot of hype for the phone, and many people bought it for that reason, but in general its a great phone.

9 out of 10 people that slate the phone clearly dont/havent owned one.

If you don't like your Storm, and you want a touchscreen smartphone, your other option by default is the iPhone.

The software and touchscreen on the iPhone were designed to work perfectly together. I couldn't imagine using anything else at this point.

Further, the App Store is brilliant. There is so much to choose from.

Get an iPhone. If you still don't like it you can always take it back. Seeing (and touching) is believing.

The Storm is a poorly designed phone. Anybody who gets it didn't do their homework.

The iPhone isn't perfect either, however. It's not that great of a phone, and has very basic features that long-time smartphone users have been complaining about. However, its the cheapest internet tablet on the market right now and no phone manufacturer has been able to outperform it in terms of ease of use and touchscreen functionality.

just curious as to why you think the storm is a poorly designed phone. I haven't heard anything bad about it yet.

storm storm storm.

the storm wins in every field exept that the iphone i would consider more user friendly and has the app store.

the storm has a learning curve ( as would any new phone) and some slight lag issues that are mostly fixed with the newest patch. and it will have an app storm early 2009.

Have you actually held one in your hands and used it? It's horrid. I thought the clicking would be nice, but it's completely annoying. The interface is ugly and slow. There's nothing the Storm has over the iPhone.

I was excited for the Storm, seeing as I'm on Verizon, but my friend picked one up and I was able to actually use it this weekend and I couldn't stand it.

While the Blackberry OS isnt as quick and easy as the iPhone, it is much more powerful in my opinion. Also, a recent software update has fixed many many issues with the storm and made it much faster. I can't really say which I like better because I dont have an iPhone, just and iPod Touch.

there is a moderate percentage of the storms that have clicking issues, were the "click reach" is higher than it should be, and people hated the click.

the people that were having the issue put a buisness card between the battery and the case which seemed to fix the issue, everyone was posting saying "100x better clicking with the card!!!!!!!!!"

    • VidCoder 12.20 by Razvan Serea VidCoder is a DVD/Blu-ray ripping and video transcoding application for Windows. It uses HandBrake as its encoding engine. Calling directly into the HandBrake library gives it a more rich UI than the official HandBrake Windows GUI. VidCoder can rip DVDs but does not defeat the CSS encryption found in most commercial DVDs. You’ll need the NET 8 Desktop Runtime. If you don’t have it, VidCoder will prompt you to download and install it. The Portable version is self-contained and does not require any .NET Runtime to be installed. You do not need to install HandBrake for VidCoder to work. Feature list: Multi-threaded MP4, MKV containers Completely integrated encoding pipeline: everything is in one process and no huge intermediate temporary files H.264, H.265, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, VP8, Theora video Hardware-accelerated encoding with AMD VCE, Nvidia NVENC and Intel QuickSync AAC, MP3, Vorbis, AC3, FLAC audio encoding and AAC/AC3/MP3/DTS/DTS-HD passthrough Target bitrate, size or quality for video 2-pass encoding Decomb, detelecine, deinterlace, rotate, reflect, chroma smooth, colorspace filters Powerful batch encoding with simultaneous encodes Customizable Pickers to automatically pick audio and subtitle tracks, destination, titles and more Instant source previews Creates small encoded preview clips Pause, resume encoding VidCoder 12.20 changes: Updated HandBrake core to 1.11.2. • Too soon, I'm still not over this death!
    • Normally, I admit when a title is clickbait (unfortunately, it's become somewhat necessary to compete against AI-dominated news sections today), but in this case, all supported versions is implied and doesn't need to be spelled out in the title. Of course, I'm covering a Patch Tuesday update bug that is only available to supported Windows SKUs. All our coverage relates to supported Windows software and SKUs only unless we expressly state that it's "unsupported", "unofficial", or "third-party". I'm sorry, but supported/official SKUs don't need to be spelled out as such in every Neowin headline.
    • ALL versions or ALL SUPPORTED versions? Neowin does it again.
