iPhone or BB Storm?

Seriously.

What used to be a strength for the iDevices is now really it's biggest reason not to buy one.

Nothing about iTunes ever gets better for the end user.

They add more stuff, but it's like putting a new swimming pool into an already sinking cruise ship.

Sinking?

Check the numbers.

The Storm craze lasted for what, two weeks? Not like anyone gives a **** now. The whole unit lacks the fit and finish of the iPhone, and the OS is ****. It won't really help RIM. The Bold is a better unit, touch or no touch. And in Q3 it came in #2 to the iPhone.

And iTunes on a mobile device is still unparalleled. If it's garbage on Windows, it shouldn't be, but in that case I understand your frustration. iTunes on an iPhone/iPod, however, is a different beast. No one else offers anything even remotely close and elegant on a smartphone. If anything, iTunes is becoming even more popular - it's spreading on yet another unit - the iPhone, which is the #1 smartphone worldwide. It's grown beyond the iPod and the desktop.

I'm shocked that RIM couldn't get it right. But the iphone really and truly came out of left field for most smartphone makers. It's nearly ruining Palm and definitely challenging the rest of the industry. And to date, there has been no worthy answer to it. It proves, for better or worse, that if you skimp out on usability, then functionality doesn't mean crap. It's strange that when Apple becomes part of the mix in this area, people's demands start to change.

It might be a curse. But it's what's happening.

Hmm..LTD, I really think you think a bit too highly of the iphone. While I can not compare it to the Storm, I can tell you straight away that I would much rather have my BB Curve. It just takes so much longer to do the simple tasks on the iphone than it does on the blackberry.

I haven't used a Blackberry for longer than 10 minutes here and there, but I've always felt the iPhone was easier to use all-around (going off of my limited experience with an iPhone as well as the experience of owning an iPod Touch). I simply may not have used a Blackberry enough to get used to its nuances and such to work more efficiently... So I'm curious as to what those tasks might be.

ok, for instance, if I get a text, message on blackberry messenger, or e-mail, when I take my phone out of it's holster it automatically opens up that message. I also really like how it automatically adjusts the backlight for how dark it is, which is great for me since I work a lot of night shifts, and even when getting a call when I'm in bed, I'm not blinded by the backlight. I like how it automatically adjusts the ringtone for WHERE I am. I show up at work and it automatically goes to vibrate for everything, except text messages I have on vibrate and a sort of very short jingle. I like how I can have all 3 of my e-mail addresses come to my phone. I like even more that it will REPLY using the one it came in on. I'm not sure how many addresses you can use with the iphone though since I haven't owned one, I just had one to use for a while. I like not having to figure out what button to push (such as the "i" button in the weather app on the iphone which not only didn't give any indication of what it did, it didn't DO ANYTHING the first time I pushed it whenever I went to push it. I like how well the curve interfaces with my car's bluetooth stereo. My old phone took about 15 seconds to connect, this one takes about 1, and the iphone won't connect AT ALL. I like how I can just drag and drop everything onto my phone from my computer, no crummy itunes to deal with. I like how quickly it charges enough to get you through a workday (mine are 12 hours long and there's been times I've gone from a completely dead battery to taking it off the charger after a half hour and it will work all day. I like how for long trips I can REPLACE THE BATTERY with a fresh one. Also, I found that I just made a whole bunch of spelling mistakes on the iphone, it's just too hard to hit the key you want and only the key you want.

I will say that the iphone does have a very nice looking skin. It does have a clever interface with it tricking you into thinking it's fast by taking a snapshot of the program. It also does have the best browser of any phone I've used. The unfortunate thing is that's it. Even the volume doesn't go as loud, and it doesn't sound nearly as good.

The blackberry is for a work environment. It can have a loud, crystal clear speaker for noisy environments. It automatically does things for you so that you save time, and possibly your retinas. It has the best messaging software, because it's easy to use and fast. Hell, you can even get autocad for the blackberry and actually make useful images on it. My welding teacher (still welds for a large company) uses it all the time to make a drawing of what he wants. He then just e-mails it off and lazer cutters in the shop will cut what he sent it and then somebody else can just deliver it to him.

In short, the blackberry's business oriented and is designed to save time on every front because time is money. The iphone, while a shiny, neat piece of gadgetry is really just for an enthusiast.

Have you actually held one in your hands and used it? It's horrid. I thought the clicking would be nice, but it's completely annoying. The interface is ugly and slow. There's nothing the Storm has over the iPhone.

I was excited for the Storm, seeing as I'm on Verizon, but my friend picked one up and I was able to actually use it this weekend and I couldn't stand it.

I too was quite excited about the Storm.

I have an iPhone, but i am no fan boy and admit when a device is better or has a better feature than the iPhone etc.

I thought the storms new click touch screen was going to be the next thing that would truelly out do the iPhone, however i was very disappointed when i played with the Storm.

The storms screen has a chunky peace of glass on it that moves up and down. There are large gaps at the side that allow this. My first thought was that a lot of dirt will get in there which could cause the "click feature" not to work properly.

After playing with the phone, the click feature was not actually what i thought it would be. It was clunky and awkward to use.

The other thing i noticed, which i was amazed by, was the slowness of the device. I clicked on 3 things. After about 10 seconds all 3 opened and the device started going crazy. The interface was slow and unresponsive, to the point i thought it was a faulty device. I tried another and experienced the exact same thing.

All that along with the lack of WIFI support, made me really dissapointed.

I do know that they already have a new version of the storm in dev which should be released maybe even early next year, although it could be summer. This version is suppose to support WIFI and improve on the click feature, as well as clear up the slowness bugs etc.

Im looking forward to the new version, but still dissapointed with the current one.

Lets just make this clear: it is entirely, absolutely, a festering pile of stinking garbage presently on Windows.

iTunes on an iPhone/iPod, however, is a different beast. No one else offers anything even remotely close and elegant on a smartphone.
Why would they need to? Being able to have a (or many) removable MicroSD card is far superior to having a central monolythic, locked down, DRM infested content hub. As people move further into cloud computing, this becomes more and more the case.
If anything, iTunes is becoming even more popular - it's spreading on yet another unit - the iPhone, which is the #1 smartphone worldwide. It's grown beyond the iPod and the desktop.

Popularity isn't always an indication that something is good. They can correlate, but it's not necessary.

(I mean, why do most people still use windows, right LTD? ;))

When you have a large pack of consumers addicted to a brand name like it's heroin, that tends to lessen the necessity of such a correlation. Such with the iPhone.

It's strange that when Apple becomes part of the mix in this area, people's demands start to change.

It might be a curse. But it's what's happening.

When Apple comes into a new market, the same pack of heroin addicts unquestionably blows their wad* on the new product. Apple could OEM a waffle iron and a year and a half from now we'd be talking about how they took the Waffle iron industry by storm! It could even integrate with iTunes!

*of cash, what did you think I ment?

newest OS update for the storm has been released.

everyone is saying it makes the phone work flawless, and from the videos ive seen of the updated models, they go from portrait to landscape instantly, and all the applications load instantly. camera loads a bit faster, and i havnt seen any accelerometer glitches.

only problem now is the few phones people got were the screws were over tightened causing the 'click' to be harder to do on some parts, or have to press to hard.

+1 (Y)

Well apparently the Storm has more features than the iPhone at this point, but I would honestly buy an iPhone if I had to. I currently love my iPod Touch 1st gen, if it were to get a faster device with phone capabilities, a camera, and GPS navigation, I'd seriously get the iPhone.

You know that BlackBerry will most likely stop working on the firmware soon (unless there are bugs to fix). But Apple still continues to change, update and add features to its firmware, and you're always getting support for it.

Also, the app store itself is so well designed for everyone, the consumer and the developer, that I don't see how BlackBerry will make something better. It's also integrated with iTunes, which is now used universally, even if we like it or not. (I'm on a Mac, and I love iTunes, it may be different on Windows)

That being said, next summer we'll most likely see a new iPhone version 4, as well as a new version of the firmware just to support these new functionalities. I can't believe people say "Apple delivers too many products, you buy one and then it's updated, wtf?". One per year, is it seriously too much for us? Meanwhile, Blackberry will make like 6 new phones, and people won't complain.

Anyway, I see that you have bought an iPhone now, it's a great purchase. IMO you bought one of the top 5 phones that ever existed (IMO honestly you bought the best, but you know...). :)

the storm was JUST released in canada, and still isnt out in BC where i am, you cant say the "storm craze" is over before its even been released.

you seem to love the iphone a bit too much.

just played with a dummy storm and its just as sleek and nice looking as the iphone on the outside.

I have to agree, that is just the reason why i continue to use my PSP as an mp3 player as opposed to getting an iPod

    • Zed 1.7.2 has landed with updated OpenCode models, bug fixes and other improvements by David Uzondu Zed 1.7.2 recently landed on the stable release channel, bringing a host of AI-related features including automatic context compaction and settings-based skill management, along with other things like better Markdown preview rendering and custom git commands in the graph view. Starting with the AI stuff, the developers introduced "/compact", a command that basically summarizes your conversation history on demand. This tool prevents your active chat window from hitting token limits by compressing older parts of the dialogue into a brief overview. In addition to that, the team relocated skill management to the settings UI, improving how the application communicates errors regarding those skills, and updated the OpenCode model roster to support DeepSeek V4 Flash, MiniMax M3, Qwen 3.7 Plus, and Nemotron 3 Ultra Free. External agent users can also monitor context window cost metrics and delete individual sessions directly from their history. Right-clicking ref labels in the git graph now opens a context menu that runs different actions against selected targets, kind of how VS Code does it. Here are some of the bug fixes this new release brings: The active agent fails to auto-select when creating a new git worktree. A scrollbar unexpectedly appears on wrapped code blocks in the agent chat. Collapse indicators for project headers appear when performing sidebar searches. Bracketed ellipsis title prefixes fail to show the ellipsis icon properly. Project icons render incorrectly in the recent projects picker. Diff hunk controls appear inside non-editable commit view multibuffers. The software update button hangs indefinitely on the downloading stage. Restoring an agent terminal in a remote project triggers a sudden crash. Splitting a pane that contains an active commit view causes a crash. Linux Wayland freezes when trying to read the clipboard from laggy external apps. Zed is a "newish" code editor trying to break the massive stronghold VS Code has on the developer community. Funny enough, the editor was created by former GitHub employees who worked on the Atom text editor (which Microsoft killed in 2022, several years after it bought GitHub). The project officially hit version 1.0 back in April, introducing platform parity for Windows and Linux alongside deep support for DeepSeek-V4-Pro.
    • 26H2 absolutely will support ARM Windows just not on devices that came with 26H1. This is evident by the fact I am running 26H2, which on my MacBook Neo and Surface Pro 12 (inch), within a VM.
