Work gives you pride, my fiance for example has a masters in teaching with inclusion, she is currently working for ?6 per hour as an LSA, till she finds a career that fits her

qualifications, she is mixed race also which is another thing against her in kent.

So we (when I finish my degree) will move to Canada.

Till then she is applying all over Britain and Europe (to countries she speaks the same language, France and some German).

Where I live 7 months of the year there are thousands upon thousands of jobs picking fruit and vegetables and laboring/farm work.

The lazy white unemployed trash where we live won't do the jobs, their grand-parents did when they travelled out of London to hop-pick.

It was like a long working holiday.

They eventually stayed and council housing was built for them.

We have to import, Russains, Czechs, Slovaks, Pols and other Eastern Europeans to do the jobs.

Even our bus company 'Arriva' is employing Eastern Europeans to drive their busess.

They even do a better job than the indigenous population.

If you want a job, you will travel.

Also, i think you will find the "white trash" cant get a job because of the Slovaks etc. They work for less money, save and go home where the money is worth more. If a British person works for that same wage, it is worth tuppence in the current ecenomical climate. Not to mention its more cost effective for some, to stay on state benefit than to work, as my sister found out the hard way, by getting a job and leaving state benifit, which now means she really struggles, whereas before, she was fine. In other words mate, stop talking about things you are obviously racially biast about and actually havent really looked in to.

When my dad worked all over the contry i had to move from place to place trust me its not as easy as you make it out to be ! you cant just up and move with a young family it doesnt work like that

I hate the idea of blaming something like a disorder for the way I feel, but having dealt with depression before, I also wonder if I suffer from SAD because ever since the cold weather has hit I've been completely bummed out and exhausted all the time. On the days where we get a burst of warmth, I feel much better , again.

I'm pretty sure someone I know via Neowin also suffers from it. Maybe it's more common than we think. Either way, I would suggest trying to distract yourself as much as possible. Music, games, TV, family or anything healthy to keep your mind off of the feelings you're trying to battle.

I could very well be wrong. And as this is the internet, you could also very easily lie and say I'm wrong, then make up a story to "prove" how "wrong" I am. No one knows for sure. But the way you two talk, it seems very clear that neither of you have actually been in a similar situation as the OP.

Life, especially when it hits a snag, is not that simple. People who have actually hit these snags find that out very quickly.

You don't know anything about the OP, aside from that he's out of work, and that he lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan. First of all, many of those listings are probably not actually the kind of "maintenance jobs" you're thinking of. Just the other day, I was glancing at monster.com for whatever kind of web developing or computer programming jobs might be around here for Ryan, when we move. Several of them actually had nothing to do with what I searched for; there was a couple of nursing jobs in there, a listing for a cook, all kinds of things that had nothing to do with computer programming or web developing, but still showed up under those specific searches. On top of that, many of those listings are out of date; a lot of the positions have been filled, but the companies haven't taken the listing down. The most important things are the qualifications. Many of them will require certain education, experience, or training that the OP may not have. For many of them, the OP may be overqualified; the companies may not want to hire someone who, with his qualifications, would require a larger paycheck than someone with less experience/training.

It's easy to tell someone in a less desirable situation than you what they should do, and to insult them for not doing it. It's another thing to have actually been in the same situation, and to humbly suggest something they might try.

But hey, I'm sure you guys are right. The OP would probably rather watch his family--including his newborn baby--suffer from his unemployment, than find a decent paying job that will allow him to take better care of them. :rolleyes:

I would give up my friend. Looks like leesmithg has given up on actually reading anyone else's comments and taken to just assuming he is correct, that he is so wonderfull the sun shines out of his backside and that everyone's life is EXACTLY the same as his own.

that and if i worked for bare minimum wage with no benefits i could not provide for my family. all of the $$ would go to child support. it doesn't look good here in michigan right now, the big 3 ordeal looks grim and now at&t are laying off workers too.

to the person who said there aren't alot of people out of work, check the unemployment lines again. every temp agency ive called hasn't had any jobs for weeks, the news papers wanted jobs section is down to a page and a half.

i even went to meijers the other day to apply for seasonal work and there was a 2 hour line of people waiting to apply, that's how bad it is.

i may just give up for this month and start fresh in the 1st of the year. ive already sent out enough applications and resumes.

heres a statistic i just read, for every job posted online or in the papers there are an average of 300 - 500 applicants. talk about a needle in a haystack when it would come to getting an interview. :(

on the good side i got a job offer today, only part time maintenance work at a woodworking shop just up the road from me. they will pay me $15 an hour "under the table" to fix things and do odd jobs. i guess i start monday and it will have to tide me over until i get a full time gig.

it didn't end up working out for me. they wanted me to provide all of the supplies to fix their issues, i can't do that because $$ is tight. damn im upset and i think i give up for this month, ill start fresh in 2009, hopefully some jobs will open up by then.

yeah i hear the beginning of the year is a good time to look for work. besides ive put out enough resumes, so if someone is interested they will call me.

thank god my wife and i got a few grand back from the feds a few weeks ago. it will tide us over for a few months.

i sent out a resume via email today and this was the auto response i got back :

1) Moving does not guarantee a job. I did that. I lucked in - after looking for 4 months. Making better money and all, but it was a risk.

2) Economy in pre and post war was MUCH different than today. Skills, education were less critical and availability of work was huge in labour.

3) SAAD does happen. There's quite a few Harvard Medical studies on it. It happens to most in winter but can be much worse for some. Exercise and Vitamin D work for me. I'm in the rain capital of Canada. After being in Ontario and suffering from countless storms last year, I'm doing a bit better.

There's some lights you can get. For me, I get a splitting headache.

4) Feel bad for you living in Michigan. I drove through Michigan a few years ago. I didn't understand what Michael Moore was talking about with Flint Michigan until I drove through it. With the bleak news on the Big 3 + the mortgage crisis being worst hit in Michigan, I really feel bad for everyone there. Makes me kind of want to cry.

5) I might suggest thinking of Canada or working on contract in Canada. With your experience etc., working in Alberta in oil or in north in the Diamond mines, might be very profitable for you. Employees are well paid and work on rotating 3 or 4 month shifts. Just a thought. There might be similar work for you in States or abraod (e.g. Saudi Arabia) where your family won't have to relocate.

Man, a few grand lasts you months? I'd say you're lucky already. Did you say you're just outta high school and paying child support already?

I'm not judging - but that sucks if that's the scenario :/ I've been to Michigan - hell, I'm one state to the left of you :p I've got more people here without jobs than I've seen in awhile. It's like people get together for social events and that's the talk of the night - how their wives or husbands are out of jobs for months and months with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Someone close to me was working for one of the big 3. Ended up moving about 2 hours north from where she was before to take another job before everyone from her department was laid off. She wasn't crazy-nuts about it but she would have considered moving out of state just to make sure she had something. She knew she could be in a bad scenario with all this garbage going on in the economy today.
