Yay number two broken.

The PS3 failure rate will show over time as the PS2 showed about 1.5 years into it's life with constant dvd drives failing. I had 3 die on me in the past so its no secret there was a problem.

History will likely repeat itself with PS3. I've only had my PS3 only 6 months so should have no issues yet.

CD/DVD/BR Drives are never the most bulletproof of hardware anyways. It is worrying though at the pace in which they break. The drive on my laptop is about 8 months old and is no longer 100% fully functional.

I'm guessing due to the nature of the PS3 it uses a slimmer style drive than the standard sizing you find in a PC. I could be totally wrong there though.

the optical drive is one of few moving parts in these machines. considering the amount of use they get. I guess its worse with the slot loading drives loading mechanism. My copy of R2 is stuck inside my PS3, if it were a normal tray loadin drive I could do the paperclip thing to remove it. However mines dead until I get a replacement in a couple of weeks. Even after that I have to wait on Sony extracting my disc and sending it to me (I checked this with them, they do that as I guess I'm not the only one who has been playing a game and it fails)

Mine did fail in the middle of Resistance 2 but luckily it still lets me eject. Apparently they already sent off my coffin and it should be here Monday but I still don't have the money to pay them. So it is going to have to wait.
