Why is watching 720p Youtube vids so cpu intensive?

Recommended Posts

Chrome uses 9% CPU while playing that video, hardly CPU intensive my end.

As for Silverlight, Flash is available on every platform and thus will remain top dog, until Microsoft release it for OS X and Linux I cant see it going anywhere fast.

Brandon Live, Got any good examples of Silverlight powered sites/videos? I want to test them out :)

Silverlight is available for OS X isn't it? Linux? The Linux community is very small! :p

How is that video clip 720p? It is embedded into webpage at 640 x 360. Playing full screen just expands that small clip to fit the screen. It might be encoded at 720p but your not actually watching a 1280 x 720p HD video clip on YT.

OS X, not as far as I know... I'll look into that.

As for Linux, trust, it's a lot bigger then Market Share would let on.

Silverlight is available for OSX, always has been. I have it installed right now.

How many Silverlight powered sites do you visit a day? Also can you name some sites that let you watch videos which are powered by Sliverlight?

I've noticed that. If it's not streaming a 1280x720 video, why do they insist it's 720p?

I downloaded the video with DownloadHelper on Firefox and I got a 720p mp4.

The file is itself 720p but is being streamed on YT at a lower res. Downloading it gives you the file not the streamed version. Stream a HD video from Apple's QT site and you'll notice the difference.

I don't look for Silverlight sites. I have it installed just in case I come across one.

Okay for some reason I'm NOT getting anything close to 720. It still looks like crap here. What's the matter? I have fmt=22 in the url..

What video you watching? All depends whether or not there is a higher res version on the servers.

after the url: &fmt=22 (Y)

And you don't find that making your browser use more resources than needed?.. Have you gone to a Silverlight site this week at all?

I'm trying to watch this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUPcimeiqLE&fmt=22

I also tried the UK Youtube version.. same effect.

Yeah I meant to say that. But I was lazy and forgot the &. :p

Uhm, why would it use up more resources if it isn't used? On-demand, you know...

Your theory:

Proof of why your theory is wrong:

I had that too. If I took fmt=22 off the end of the URL it only said 'Play in High Quality' All HD content says 'Play HD'.

    • Not even an OLED display on the laptops. Also it seems that the laptop design isn't the same as the Surface Ultra model. Looks like bargain bin at high prices.
    • VirtualBox 7.2.10 by Razvan Serea VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software. Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, 7, 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6, 3.x, 4.x, 5.x and 6.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, OpenBSD, NetBSD and FreeBSD. Some of the features of VirtualBox are: Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don't have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox. Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers. • OK, now ask yourself how are they going to enforce that law? By requiring every single adult to prove their age and provide their legal identity documents to an UNREGULATED 3rd party company that already has a long track record of multiple data breaches. Not to mention, parliament have voted AGAINST this ban, twice, and Starmer is going ahead anyway. So, where's the democracy here, because that looks like dictatorship to me. The solution here is parental responsibility, not government control. Run some public service announcements on TV and UK social media teaching parents how to setup parental controls. That's already been proven to actually work. But the, this is not and has NEVER been about keeping kids safe. It's about control and monitoring. Watching what you're doing online and controlling what you can see and what you can say.
    • Interesting read. I knew the adware was quite controversial at the time, however never realised to the point The Guardian wrote an article about Patchou. I just said no and enjoyed his creation, I’d probably be a lot more wary of something like that today though.
