2009 TV Preview: 'Hustle' is back

Almost two years later, the con is back on.

The Hustle gang return for a much-anticipated fifth series in the New Year - and Mickey Bricks (Adrian Lester) is firmly back in charge. Creator Tony Jordan lets us in on what else the new series has in store.

How did the new series come about?

"When Adrian Lester left at the end of series three, there was something really interesting to me about doing a series with Danny Blue (Marc Warren) in charge. Danny had been knocking on the door for the first few series, wanting to be the boss, so I thought it was quite exciting to see what kind of job Danny would make as leader of the crew. In that series we did Hollywood, with Robert Wagner, then for the finale we did Las Vegas. Then I kind of felt that was it and I'd done everything I wanted to do. So it just kind of went away and I moved on to other things. Then I was in conversation with Adrian Lester, who suggested he might come back, so that suddenly sparked my interest again."

What has Mickey been up to in the intervening period?

"In the last series it was explained that he was in Australia, selling the Sydney Opera House. We see a bit of that in the first episode of the new series. Then he comes back from Australia to find that his crew no longer exists. So it's a little bit like the first episode ever, with Mickey assembling his team again."

Which other characters are coming back and do we have new ones?

"Ash is back, Albert is back and Eddie is back, but there's no Danny and Jaime Murray is off Dexter-ing, so we lost Stacie too. Of course, we've got new characters - and that's part of the surprise of the first episode. There are lots of twists and turns in the first episode!"

What sort of cons do the gang have this year?

"We're kind of lucky in a way I suppose, in that right slap bang in the middle of the [writing] process we started hitting the recession and credit crunch. It would have been silly of us not to use this world, so Mickey comes back to a very different London to the one he left. He left with everyone on a high, house prices spiralling and everybody having a ball, but now it's doom and gloom and even the banks are going bust. We've got some great cons too. For the first time ever, I've used the same mark in more than one episode. Early on in the series we see a mark and then later on in the series he comes back for his revenge. That's quite cool!"

Earlier this year Jaime Murray told me you were working on Hustle: The Movie. How's that coming along?

"I have written a Hustle movie. It's quite a difficult thing to do - how do you make it more than an extended episode of Hustle? How do you please the Hustle audience but also make it accessible to people who've never seen the show before? It's quite a tricky thing. So yes it is a live project and I have written a couple of drafts, but I'm still fighting with it. I'm just about to do another draft. I think it will happen."

It's intended for the big screen?

"Yeah, and that's what makes it difficult. If it was just a TV film, obviously that would be a much easier proposition - I'd just do a 90-minute version of Hustle! For the big screen there are so many other things to take into consideration. Do you do it carrying on from the last series? Do I do it with the new crew or old crew? Do I recast? There are a lot of questions we're fighting our way through to come up with the best version. It's work-in-progress."

Does seem like its all boys this season, no Danny either, the newcomer has gone. Plus Jaime Murray has gone.

I think its going to be a very different series without a woman in it.

Also Matt di Angelo (Eastenders Deano) is supposedly playing a part as the new team.

Do you think it'll have appeal now there isn't currently a woman seem to be planned in for the series?

Your thoughts please :)

I won't miss Billy Bond. He was only there to inject some "artificial" diversity into the series and to replay the whole Mickey-Danny situation again with Danny being the mentor (showing how the Danny character had evolved).

I was surprised seeing Jamie Murray in Dexter (she seemed to love being in the nude  ) and I'm sad she's leaving Hustle. But that also means that there will be a new female character: every con team needs a femme fatale type.

Loosing Marc Warren... now that's bad. He was my favorite and his "grift sense" moments were the best. The 4th season was all about him and it was very good.

Maybe they will handle the 5th season as a reboot, since it's about Mickey putting together a new crew (albeit Ash and Albert still being around).

I love this series. I will miss Danny and Stacie, but my favorites were always Albert and Mickey and glad they will be back. I wonder about Jamie Murray though, Dexter should be done with her (in more ways than one) did they film this season of Hustle that long ago?

During the Summer

Then Jamie Murray should have been finished with Dexter or Dexter was finished with her anyhow. I'll actually miss her more than Danny Blue.

Yeah but maybe she just thought she could make it big in America, she was in some craptastic show the last time I looked called Valentine or something on CW

Real shame then. I absolutely loved her on Hustle and enjoyed her on Dexter too.

I gonna try to watch this series but not looking forward to it like normal, it wont be the same without stacie an danny.

I will miss them more then mickey. Danny was my fave cheeky chap who brought the comedy element in i dont think they can replace them, not sure this shows gonna survive i could be wrong maybe new characters will make up for it but am unsure. think this seasons gonna flop.

I enjoyed it. I miss Stacey and Danny still, but otherwise all the things I love were still present. The slick talk and dress, the beautiful backdrops, the being let in on only part of the con until the end.

I'm not buying the new boy yet. The girl I buy. The boy just seems flat and one dimensional so far.

The episode was going great with the elaborate set up, the drinking prowess and then bam!

Black suits? Hacking electronic locks? I know Ash is the Fixer but... this is Hustle not Theft!

Albeit they stole the Crown Jewels once, it was to further another con that we, the viewer, were unaware.

That parts in the museum were in there basically to mount tension between Mickey and Emma. I know that they must something on to develop their "relationship" (like Stacey and Danny which took forever to get it a slight bit on ) but there wasn't really much of a con going on in this episode, more of an elaborate heist. And Mickey himself said it before "We're grifters not thieves." and says it again at the end of the episode, they are not thieves and this is not a show about stealing and the process of stealing things. It's about long cons and working the marks, using "the grift sense"

Eddie being conned was the usual stuff, they're really hammering it in the he is to be made the butt of the small con jokes.

The way they operated and the scenes were filmed even reminded me of Leverage  Now how's copying who...

There wasn't even much of a con, just a lot of blackmailing. They had no choice but to comply with Mickey's instructions.

I hope this episode was a fluke and they will pick up the great cons that they did in the previous seasons :(

And for anyone who saw "Inside Man", it's bleeding obvious where the painting is.

It was an all round entertaining episode but maybe it's because I've watched all the 5 five seasons of Hustle, but the twist at the end was pretty predictable from the moment that Emma says that phrase. I was entertained but not surprised like I was in the last episode. I hope that the last two episodes are more in the vein of the 3rd one :/

Well... I don't really know how to classify this episode :/

The story was entertaining, Emma was totally hot (as usual) and the payoff was nice.

But... the diner scene. Come on, anyone who has watched Hustle knew that was all part of the con. They really should stop creating artificial tension between Emma and Mickey. And Sean... well, seems like every new season where a main cast member is gone they add a Danny Blue 2.0. They've all sucked. Billy Bond still managed to be more entertaining than Sean :/ I only found him interesting in the Three Card Monte trick. I hope the 6th episode will be more like the third.

Bring back Danny Blue and Stacy and cut Sean from the crew. That would be just perfect :shifty:

Have to agree with that, Danny was awesome, Sean i find pretty annoying.

I liked this series, but i just felt like they explained wot the basic role of each person was every ep, especially in lastest ep, just seemed to go on forever lol, this is what a roper does blah blah...etc, the sean guy jsut seems to be there to make it simple for everyone. Which is why i find him annoying i think, just seems a dumbass lol, i know they've done it in the other seasons, just seemed a bit over the top this time. And there didnt seem to be any huge scores this time, or ones u werent sure if they could pull off really.

The best episode was the 3rd one, where Sean was the mark. Maybe that's why I like that episode so much

But this finale was also good. I was expecting them to reveal that they were playing a con within a con. There were hints tough: Alfie talking about a red head (we know Emma loved to use wigs) and Sean talking about how Albert found the marks. Subtle clues to the big payoff.

All of the gang from series five are back for the new six-part run, filming for which has just got underway in Birmingham.

Heading up the motley crew of grifters is Mickey Bricks (Adrian Lester), ably assisted by Albie Stroller (Robert Vaughn) and Three Socks Morgan (Robert Glenister). Also back are brother-sister duo Emma and Sean Kennedy (Kelly Adams and Matt Di Angelo).

Show creator Tony Jordan said of series six: "I love thinking of new twists and turns for the Hustle crew and fortunately real life continues to provide great inspiration! The rich are getting richer, and the greedy only greedier so they make fine pickings for Mickey and his team. This series will see Emma and Sean still finding their feet within the Hustle gang but Mickey, Albert and Ash are there, as always, to watch their backs."

Series six is expected to air early next year on BBC One.

    • Zed 1.7.2 has landed with updated OpenCode models, bug fixes and other improvements by David Uzondu Zed 1.7.2 recently landed on the stable release channel, bringing a host of AI-related features including automatic context compaction and settings-based skill management, along with other things like better Markdown preview rendering and custom git commands in the graph view. Starting with the AI stuff, the developers introduced "/compact", a command that basically summarizes your conversation history on demand. This tool prevents your active chat window from hitting token limits by compressing older parts of the dialogue into a brief overview. In addition to that, the team relocated skill management to the settings UI, improving how the application communicates errors regarding those skills, and updated the OpenCode model roster to support DeepSeek V4 Flash, MiniMax M3, Qwen 3.7 Plus, and Nemotron 3 Ultra Free. External agent users can also monitor context window cost metrics and delete individual sessions directly from their history. Right-clicking ref labels in the git graph now opens a context menu that runs different actions against selected targets, kind of how VS Code does it. Here are some of the bug fixes this new release brings: The active agent fails to auto-select when creating a new git worktree. A scrollbar unexpectedly appears on wrapped code blocks in the agent chat. Collapse indicators for project headers appear when performing sidebar searches. Bracketed ellipsis title prefixes fail to show the ellipsis icon properly. Project icons render incorrectly in the recent projects picker. Diff hunk controls appear inside non-editable commit view multibuffers. The software update button hangs indefinitely on the downloading stage. Restoring an agent terminal in a remote project triggers a sudden crash. Splitting a pane that contains an active commit view causes a crash. Linux Wayland freezes when trying to read the clipboard from laggy external apps. Zed is a "newish" code editor trying to break the massive stronghold VS Code has on the developer community. Funny enough, the editor was created by former GitHub employees who worked on the Atom text editor (which Microsoft killed in 2022, several years after it bought GitHub). The project officially hit version 1.0 back in April, introducing platform parity for Windows and Linux alongside deep support for DeepSeek-V4-Pro.
    • 26H2 absolutely will support ARM Windows just not on devices that came with 26H1. This is evident by the fact I am running 26H2, which on my MacBook Neo and Surface Pro 12 (inch), within a VM.

    • The FIFA World Cup is not US centric.
    • It’s amusing how Microsoft is pushing IT admins as if this was a major, game-changing update. In reality, it’s just an enablement package that bumps the build number, which is disappointing compared to the more substantial 22H2 and 24H2 releases. Technically, 25H2, 26H1, and the upcoming 26H2 are essentially the same, differing only in support schedules. They could have included the Windows K2 improvements here, but chose not to. The era of Windows being in the backburner continues, and this 26H2 release feels like an afterthought. Shame, Nadella, shame.
