I tried Microsoft's help site but cant connect so I hope someone here can help, I have two computers connected with the "cross-over cable connection" the server can access any page. But the client has problems accessing certain sites like www.real.com and tvguide.com.

The server computer is running xp home edition and the client is running windows98, I'm getting the same speeds on both computers, I'm sure it's a settings thing but not sure of what it is. I thought it could be a firewall issue but that wasn't it, I'm trying to install Realplayer One on the client and it tries to connect to register but just hangs...Thanks for any input I can get.

I have no problems with the following dynamic/automatic setup of ICS. When I deliberately hardcoded some external, ISP DNS addresses on two Win2000 PC's, I duplicated your problems with real.com, but not tvguide.com.

If the gateway or DNS address is incorrectly set on any machine, you will experience problems. If you are a total newbie, maybe the following can help.

The NIC in your Win98 PC should be set to Accept or Obtain IP addresses automatically.

(Do NOT manually hardcode your IP address from your XP machine into the Win98 NIC IP address, gateway, or DNS address fields! Each time you boot your Win98 PC some of these numbers can be different because the IP address assigned from the XP machine to your Windows98 PC is DYNAMIC.)

If the correct IP address isn't properly displayed in Windows98, type winipcfg on the command line (Run field) and from the popup window, expand the view, then select the Release All then the Renew All buttons.

[The NIC in your Win98 PC should automatically and dynamically set 198.168.0.1 as the IP address for the gateway, DHCP server, and DNS server - this number will always be the same, but do not manually type this in, but there will also be a 198.168.0.xxx IP address number that is assigned by the XP machine as your NIC's IP address.

Automatic, dynamic settings are temporary but the 198.168.0.1 IP address is assigned to match the IP address assigned on your XP machine when you first setup ICS on the XP machine.]

Initially, before completing the ICS sharing setup on your XP machine, the NIC(s) in your XP machine should also be set to automatically Obtain IP, gateway and DNS addresses!!

The XP machine will statically hardcode a private IP address of 192.168.0.1 and the network mask of 255.255.255.0 for the NIC when you first set up ICS for the dialup modem or the second NIC to DSL/cable connection!

If the connection to the internet on your XP machine is a modem, then the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) for the modem, should also be set to automatically accept IP, gateway, and DNS addresses. These numbers may change each time you dial up to your ISP, especially if you dial more than one number for your ISP (I have 5 back up numbers!)

[if you are using DSL/cable modem, the second NIC in your XP machine must also be set to Obtain the IP, gateway and DNS addresses automatically - if your ISP uses dynamic assignment of addresses otherwise it must be manually entered if you have a static IP from your ISP. ]

If you still have problems. Go back and "unshare" (unselect the Internet Connection Sharing option) for all connections (only one connection device on a physical local network should have ICS enabled) and reset all NIC's on all PC's to automatically accept IP, gateway, and DNS server addresses. Then re-enable Internet Connection Sharing on the XP modem (or NIC attached to your DSL/cable modem) and release/renew all IP addresses on your Win98 PC.

After this is setup, ping something like yahoo.com from your Windows98 PC. The XP PC should automatically dial (if setup to dial on demand) and you should have no more problems with downloading from the Windows98 PC at real.com or anywhere!

I will try to answer you, hopefully no one will use this info to try to hack your system. Since I printed it out, just edit out the WAN Interface IP address from your message above ASAP !!!!

--------------

Let me make a quick note: The DNS server reported/accepted by your Windows 98 PC should always be the same IP address as the gateway and DHCP server, which should also be 192.168.0.1. So the number of 192.168.244.xxx is incorrect and should be cleared and reset automatically even if you have your own DNS server (the XP machine can resolve it all, because XP can recognize more than one DNS server). If you manually typed in the 192.168.0.2 IP address for your Win98 PC, this is a mistake. It should be randomly and automatically assigned from/by the XP machine. Click Release All, then Renew All. If the right numbers are not reported. Repeat this procedure after following the instructions from my next, much longer posted message.

Make sure the Internet Options for IEx on your Windows 98 PC (under LAN Settings) does not have Automatic detection or Proxy checked!

You will need to reboot also, since it's Win98!

I will ask questions and write more later since your XP setup doesn't look right either!

(I assume all your system reports were done at the same time with no other network/reboot/connection changes being made!)

Be methodical about the whole process. The previous one post may not create the final solution that works, but they all apply.

I don't see how you can get any access to the Internet/WWW from your Win98 PC with the Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 4 settings on your XP machine and the IP address on your Win98 PC!!! (It also looks like you uninstalled and reinstalled the Ethernet adapter 4 times on your XP PC! If there is a link light, the Ethernet connection is working!)

There appear to be incorrect settings on both PC's, but I may be wrong

The ethernet NIC (on the XP PC) is assigning an IP address before the DSL connection is active/boots, or before it sees the Network Bridge address, that's why it comes up with an incorrect address in the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx range and a network mask of 255.255.0.0 for Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 4.

Windows 2000/XP will always assign this IP address range for DHCP clients when the booting PC cannot see the DHCP server (in this case the XP Network Bridge of your SpeedStream DSL modem).

To correct this, you need to reset the IP address for your XP machine ONLY on the ETHERNET adapter Local Area Connection 4 [NIC] AND you may have to do this each time you reboot XP, unless you modify the boot order of these network devices!! After you reset the Ethernet address in XP, you must then reset (Release, Renew) the Ethernet IP addresses on your Win98 machine. The previous post info still applies to your Win98 PC.

After you reset the XP PC Ethernet adapter Local area connection 4, the IP address should be 192.168.0.xxx. The gateway and DNS server addresses should automatically set to 192.168.0.1 -- the IP address of the bridge. This is almost identical to the Windows 98 machine except for the 192.168.0.xxx, where xxx is a different number on either PC.

Something else I can see. Your SpeedStream DSL modem has two very different DNS addresses. Although these may be correct, they indicate that you probably manually changed these numbers to different DNS assignments, and were probably not setup this way on an intial installation from Pacific Bell.

Additional help:

If you don't know how to reset/renew the IP addresses on your XP machine so it only effects the Ethernet adapter, I will explain. Each network device in Network and Dial-Up Connections has a name. (You can rename your Local Area Connection 4 to something like Ether1 or Ether4 by right-clicking on the name or icon. This can come in handy when releasing and renewing IP addresses for the Ethernet NIC.)

In XP or 2000, from a CMD window, type ipconfig /renew Local Area Connection 4. You can use a wild card, like ipconfig /renew Local*. This would renew the IP addresses of ALL adapters in your XP PC beginning with the name "Local". If you renamed the Ethernet adapter name to something shorter like Enet1, you just type ipconfig /renew Enet1. If you still have problems, maybe a /release followed by /renew is necessary. After successful releases, you must renew IP addresses. (In a CMD window, type ipconfig /? for help)

The other way to do this in XP is through the Network and Dial-UP Connections window. View the Ethernet adapter "Local Area Connection 4", and select and view the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties. Select the options to Obtain an IP address automatically, then select the option to Obtain a DNS address automatically. OK these changes and exit. You don't need to reboot with XP.

Lastly, here's how to change the boot order of network devices in 2000. (It maybe slightly different in XP. I don't have XP running now.)

Expand the Network and Dial-Up Connections window to full screen. Select the Advanced option, then Advanced Settings. You should see Adapters and Bindings tab and find your Network Bridge (Network Bridge) device. Select this device and on the far right of Advanced Settings, you will see arrows. Click the appropriate arrow that moves the Network Bridge just above (higher on the list than) Local Area Connection 4. This is the easiest way to change the boot order without going through more difficult settings. (Experiment with the order and reboot. Each time you reboot, see if the Local Area Connection 4 accepts the correct IP address range 192.168.0.xxx, not 169.xxx.xxx.xxx.) I guestimate that the order should be as follows:

SpeedStream DSL

Network Bridge (Network Bridge)

Local Area Connection 4

Remember, anytime you change the XP PC network configuration you will probably also need to reset the IP addresses on the Windows 98 machine because your Win98 machine connects to the internet/www through the XP PC!

Tell me if it all works!

On your XP machine, everything is correct except the following Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 4, which should look like this:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 4:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . . .:

Description . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : Efficient Networks RFC 1483 Virtual Miniport

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . . . .. .: 00-20-EA-0A-56-27

Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : Yes

Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . .: Yes

Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 192.168.0.xxx

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .: 192.168.0.1

Your Windows 98 PC should have these settings:

DNS Server --------- 192.168.0.1

IP Address --------- 192.168.0.xxx

Subnet Mask ------- 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway -- 192.168.0.1

DHCP Server ------- 192.168.0.1

(xxx is some number assigned by the XP PC bridge and is different for each PC.)

Tell me if it all works!

Wow justinlerner, I posted in other forums with only one reply. Which had nothing to do with my problem but he tried. :)

I changed the settings just like you recommended and it solved my problem. :) I can now browse sites that I couldn't browse like www.tvguide.com which I use every day on the client computer.

If you?re ever in the Manhattan Beach, Calif area there's a case of beer with your name on it;);)

Well hey, you never know who can help or how you can help others!

But still, in your message above where you list all your IP addresses and the WAN interface, you need to edit that message above and replace the IP numbers for the WAN interface with blanks or something!

You might want to print out all this stuff as reference for possible future use!!

    • Azure Linux 2.0 reaches end of life, requiring AKS Arc users to upgrade by Paul Hill Microsoft has warned that Azure Linux 2.0, used in Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) enabled by Azure Arc, will reach its end of life on July 31, 2025, necessitating users to upgrade. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide updates, security patches, or support for Azure Linux 2.0. The longer it is used after this date, the more vulnerable systems will become due to a lack of patches. Azure Linux 3.0 brings significant upgrades to core components that enhance performance, security, and the developer experience. The Linux kernel is upgraded from version 5.15 to 6.6, bringing performance and hardware compatibility improvements. The Containerd package has been updated from version 1.6.26 to 1.7.13, improving container management. The SystemD package has been upgraded from version 250 to 255, streamlining system and service management, and OpenSSL has jumped from version 1.1.1k to 3.3.0, providing enhanced encryption and security. Azure Linux 3.0 also brings more packages and better tooling. Major versions of Azure Linux are typically supported for three years, with Azure Linux 3.0’s EOL projected for Summer 2027. It became generally available in August 2024.Microsoft said that users must migrate to Azure Linux 3.0 by upgrading their Azure Local instances to the 2507 release when it becomes available. After the Azure Local instance has been upgraded, users can then upgrade their Kubernetes clusters. Microsoft gives you the option to remain on the same Kubernetes version during this upgrade by providing the same version number on the aksarc upgrade command. After upgrading, you can verify the kernel version on your Linux nodes by adjusting the file path in this command: kubectl --kubeconfig /path/to/aks-cluster-kubeconfig get nodes -o wide This upgrade is mandatory for continued support. If you want to learn more, check out Microsoft’s announcement which also includes how to reach out to the AKS Arc team if you need to.

    • many people specially intel users stick with 23h2 because for some 24h2 have degraded performance, meanwhile they took 4 years to fix ryzen performance, amd and microsoft put the work to optimize but now crippling intel. for me windows 11 it feels like a beta OS, its not stable or reliable, every patch tuesday you have to pray that they dont break something.
    • Hi all! My motherboard is Gigabyte x570 Gaming X, and believe it or not I just realised it has two M2 slots 😅 So I wanna buy a new SSD, which would mostly be used for gaming. What would you recommend I buy? Is 990 Evo Plus good choice?
