Something is capping my internet speed

Im sorry but from the start I already knew the solution:

Format and reinstall Windows.

The problem lies in malware on your PC which is slowing down your connection. Its plain and simple.

I know that will fix it, but at this point in time, it's difficult for me to reformat.

I'm an RA at my dormitory, and we've got the Novell client on our computers in order to access the internet there. I've already had to have the poor computer workers set up Novell and some other stuff 3 times this year because of reformatting, Lol. They probably won't install it again for me.

I guess I'll load up on malware scanners and see what I can come up with...

Well, you should install Windows,Novell and make a image that way when this happens you just restore the image and in 20 minutes life goes on. Is there anyway to backup Novell client and its configs and just reformat? What i don't understand is you said you used a linux livecd how did you get the internet w/o Novell Client?

As far as I know, I can't back up my settings. Perhaps there's a way... I'll check into it.

I'm at home on Christmas break, that's why I was able to get online with Linux.

Comcast has confirmed they're not capping my speed. They've also replaced my modem and gave me a new one...

Download a network monitoring tool and watch your outgoing traffic for a little while. If you have any torrent software, malware or anything that's continuously sending data that can definitely bog down your connection.

I'd start with the monitoring tool though.

Agreed. Backup your current Firefox profile somewhere and then delete it. Open firefox to auto create a fresh profile. See if there is a difference.

As for the network monitoring tool, I recommend Bitmeter 2.

Try setting your Network Card speed to Auto or Full Auto in device manager. When i'm connected directly to my modem, setting the speed to 100mbps full duplex kills my download speed, it's done this for almost ten years, with diffrent computers, it's a problem with motorola surfboard modems, i don't know if comcast supply those.

EDIT: Why not have a look at the networking tab in task manager, just to see what your connected at and what percent is being used.

Gee your computer won't boot into safe mode but you have trouble believe that there is something wrong with it? Reformat and stay away from the Warez and porn. problem solved.

I couldn't even go into safe mode as soon as I reformatted. My computer is...not good. It's an old Compaq SR1012NX....

I uninstalled firefox, reinstalled, etc. Same thing.

Although before I went to bed, I loaded up all of my scanners and did a deep scan throughout the night.

Most found nothing, but for some reason, asquared decides to detect files that have been on my computer for ages and say that they're trojans. Even though I doubted the results, I quarantined them anyway. Must have worked, 'cause I have about 30mb more ram free than usual. :huh:

But... Same speeds. Hahaha.

I think Comcast is still coming today to check things out, so we'll see what happens...

Well, I've determined that it has to be something wrong with windows. I just ran Ubuntu and got 22mbps down. :blink:

Speeds were amazingly fast. Back to windows now, and it's down to 2mb again.

What's wrong here?

Should I screen shot my processes?

Format your HD and reinstall Windows!

Uninstalling FF does not remove the profiles. Didn't see what version of Windows you were running put the profiles are usually in "C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles". Go there and delete the folders in there and try again. The fact you were getting 22Mbps in Linux is weird but I am guessing a coding error or something. You could also try creating a new account, that way all the files associated with the profile are fresh.

It will not remove the settings unless you explicitly click on the box during the uninstall to "Remove personal data". But, the method you mentioned above is the easier way to delete profiles without having to reinstall Firefox.

Why do a clean install? From everything he has told us, its only not working properly with Firefox. His first post says he is paying for a 6Mbps connection, his speeds in IE and Chrome are correct. Firefox is the only one that doesn't seem to be working correctly.

You see, there are Megabytes, and there are megabits, there are 8 bits in a byte, internet service providers tell their speed in megabits because it makes it sound more than they give, but the download speed you get is 124 kiloBytes per second. If you multiply that by 8, to convert i t into bits, that will give you 992 kilobits, so that's just about the right speed you should be getting, because there are 1000kilobits in a megabit.

      WordArt was cool. We now have color fonts as a substitute although Word only supports COLRv0 and COLRv1 (Fraud OS 11 only). The OpenType SVG color font format needs to be supported by Office. Adobe's apps support it
