Is there anywhere I can download Ubuntu 8.10 with the 2.6.28 Kernel already installed. Its to install on my EEEPC 701. I have the Ubuntu 8.10 ready to install but when I install it the Wireless wont work out of the box and I wont have access to the internet to download the newer kernel.

Yes, actually, there is a need to manually do it.

When Ubuntu is released, the kernel feature version (the third number, e.g. 27 in the case of 2.6.27-9) is locked, allowing only bugfix updates. If you want kernel 2.6.28, which I don't blame you for wanting, you'll have to compile it yourself, or find a package from Jaunty and install that. I seem to remember a post on the Ubuntu forums about compiling your own kernel, but I would probably just install it from Jaunty's repositories.

That's all well and good, but if you read his original question he has no Internet access until he gets that version installed to support his wireless driver.

Ok so here is a ss of unetbootin, now i have not tried this but i think it should work. You load up the iso image and then you choose which kernel you want to install on your flash drive install or even into a hdd. I will give it a try sometime this week, once my 1tb hdd gets here, so if anyone has tried it give us some more info on how this works. I for one, will be installing this new kernel into a new ubuntu install for the simple fact that i really want to start trying ext4.

Its sooooooo much easier than it used to be.

Compiling a kernel doesn't have to be an easy task, and it isn't.

It's oriented for who has some experience and understanding of what it involves. A good learning experience too if you want to know a bit more about how the kernel from an OS works, what it does and how it is made.

It's understandable that this task may look overwhelming to a relatively new user, but like it was stated it is not meant for those, unless of course, the person in question is willing to learn and wants to use this task as a learning experience. Expect doubts to emerge in this situation, doubts that can be handled by reading the documentation and the huge number of available guides for going about completing this task. This is not your case as we can see by your posts and just by simply looking at your signature, your are a person who despises knowledge and diversity of ideas. Please keep yourself in your world, but let others have their own choice at learning new things.

I linked him to the actual current documentation for the distro he uses, not the 5-year old clunky half-assed mess you linked. Simply put, if he were to follow the guide you linked, he would create a complete mess and be confused and frustrated in no time.

By saying it was easier than it used to be, I was referring to the fact that it's much easier using apt-get and having automatic dependency resolution now, than 10+ years ago when I was learning all this. This wasn't a jab at anyone, I was stating a fact. Not sure why you got all butt-hurt about this, but whatever. Nerd rage must be overwhelming you...
