That seems really unlikely.. I just put a test.jpg file in created with mspaint in the pictures folder and its shows up search just fine.

Now I am running sp2 beta.. But I find it unlikely there is a bug that prevents mspaint files from showing up.

Where are you saving them, and what file type? Maybe your index is set not to index that file type or location -- what program used to create it has nothing to do with it.

Not a big fan of the MS indexing in general.. I use locate32 for all my indexing needs. http://www.locate32.net/

I save them in my pictures folders. Only the MS Paint saved images are affected by this bug!

- I save an image (jpg, png, etc.) with MS Paint, I open the folder where I saved it, in the search box I type the name of image but nothing is found.

- I save an image (jpg, png, etc.) with another program (i.e. IE7, Firefox, Paint.NET), I open the folder where I saved it, in the search box I type the name of image and the image is found.

In the same folder I have different images: images saved with MS Paint, images saved with other programs; I can't find the images saved with MS Paint. So there's a bug in MS Paint which prevents the saved images to be indexed.

The program used to create a file has NOTHING to do with the indexing service indexing it. NOTHING!! It just does not work that way.

Indexing is based on location and file extension.. Does not matter if you create a file with notepad and call it picture.jpg or paint, or gimp or psp or paint.net or download the file with FF or IE, etc.. etc..

You do understand that it can take a bit for files to show up in the index.. They are not instantly added to the index.

If your not happy with the builtin indexing.. use something else.. I would highly recommend locate32 -- but again this does not instantly update your index either. You need to schedule when it updates your index, I have mine set to update every morning around 5 am, etc.

you're wrong. If I save an image using another program I'm able to find it instantly! All images saved with MS Paint are never shown in the search results, never and never! This bug is always reproducible on my system.

I save an image with MS Paint, I open the folder where I saved it, I type its name in the explorer search box... no results!

I save an image with IE7 or Paint.NET or FF, I open the folder where I saved it, I type its name in the explorer search box... found it instantly!

I have a lot of images saved in my pictures since months ago and I notice that the images saved with MS Paint are not shown in the search results; the images saved with other programs appear in the search results.

WTF does opening the folder have to do with it? If you opening the folder -- what you can not see the file? WTF you have to search the index for?

Well then maybe sp2 fixes it :rolleyes: Since I am not having that issue.

edit: I'll grab my sons laptop here in a bit.. It does not have the beta sp2 installed.. But again what program is used to create the file has NOTHING to do with how its indexed.

please listen to me:

I save a new image with MS Paint => no result!

I save a new image with IE7, FF, Paint.NET => I'm able to find it.

So the used program makes the difference! MS Paint has a bug.

no, the wait time doesn't matter,

because I have a lot of images saved with MS Paint months ago and they never appear in the search results. And If I save a new image using another program, the newly saved file is instantly shown in the search results.

If I open the folder where I saved them and in the explorer search box I type the name of a file saved with MS Paint, the image will not appear in the results! The filter doesn't show the images saved with MS Paint! The filter works fine when I search for images saved with the other programs.

So, there're 2 issues:

1) start menu search box doesn't show results for images saved with MS Paint (jpg, png, gif, etc)

2) the explorer filter box doesn't filter the images saved with MS Paint (I'm inside a folder contains images saved with MS Paint and images saved with other programs, my images are here, I type the name of a file saved with MS Paint but the filter has no effect i.e. no result for a file saved with MS Paint! The filter works fine on all other images saved with the other programs)

Are you saving it to your Documents or Pictures folder? By default, Windows will only index your C:\Users folder.

theres no way someone with 13,000+ posts on a pc support forum and has had years of experience with computers, would know what hes talking about.

also that fact that hes an MVC for helping out so many people.....but nope, your right.....hes wrong cause you said so.

Just an FYI, those aren't really comparable things at all. locate32 just searches filenames or dates. There really is little benefit over "dir /s".

Have you installed the Windows Search 4 update? (which is included in SP2, but available on Windows Update right now). It includes improved retry logic for cases where an application may be locking a file immediately after saving to it, preventing the indexer from accessing it.

I did get some strange behaviour*, but the file did show up.

* Basically, I saved a file from Paint called "Untitled.jpg", if I typed "untitled" into the search prompt it showed up, if I typed "untitled.jpg" into the search prompt it didn't. I checked the "index file" flag in the advanced properties, and then I could search for it via name and name + extension.

you're right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You found the cause of this bug: the index property is disabled for all images created with MS Paint. MS Paint has a bug!

Where is other post about a known bug.. I find it UNLIKELY that the program creating the file has anything to do with it. The application creating a file should have nothing to do with how its indexed.

Please point out this post you say you found stating such.

I save the images in the same folder using different programs:

- I can't find any images saved with MS Paint (no results from start menu search box, no results from the folder search box!!!)

- I can find any images saved with all other programs

- all images saved with MS Paint have NOT the index attribute

- all images saved with all other programs have the index attribute

MS Paint has a bug!

Well I save and I saved as.. And the index this file for faster searching property is set eitherway.

But sure if the file does not have the index this file property set, then no it should not show up in your index.

I would love to see this MS posting they mention that confirms this bug.

This should of been one of the first things you checked.. I wold of assumed you had gone over this article.

When you search the index, you experience the symptoms in the "Symptoms" section if any one of the following conditions is true:

* The file is not in an indexed location.

* The file type of the file is not indexed.

* The file has properties that prevent it from being indexed.

* The indexer has not yet inserted the file into the index.

* The indexer is overlooking the file.

* The items in the search results do not match the file that you are searching for.

Works fine here. I started MSPaint, went to File>Save As... and entered a file name. It saved in Pictures folder and I immediately went to the start menu and typed the file name. It showed up at the top of the list as expected. It is NOT, however, flagged with the "Index this file for faster searching" box.

Edit: Yeah, files saved by paint here don't have the indexing flag set.

      i backup my files, incl keepass to my proton drive using Syncback which i paid for (thanks Warwagon!). they have a free version but i can't remember what it does and doesn't do anymore. anyways, it's really, really simple and easy to use. i also periodically keep backups of my keepass onsite especially when i've changed or added a password that is important to me. if you don't wanna spend time on the syncthing setup, get syncback. haha i even got my dad to use it for his backups to usb and he doesn't even need my help!!! (thank god!)
