0 Starbuck84
JKDefrag for me. I like the fact that it automatically defrags all the drives / partition with just one click, and that it's free. :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/717868-definitive-best-defragmenter-2009/page/3/#findComment-590825294 Share on other sites

0 Karl L.
I'm a command line kinda guy; so I use Sysinternals Contig most of them time. It can defragment individual files or whole drives, be scheduled to run automatically (no longer necessary in Vista), or be run from a script. I think that it just invokes the default Windows Defragmenter though. 0 sc302 Veteran Posted April 24, 2009 Veteran Share Posted April 24, 2009 I have always used diskeeper. microsofts defrag from windows 2000-xp was based off of the retail version of diskeeper http://support.microsoft.com/kb/227463/EN-US/ Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/717868-definitive-best-defragmenter-2009/page/3/#findComment-590895092 Share on other sites
0 way2quik
Vista built-in defrag is really slow. I think I may turn to 3rd party software such as Auslogic, Smart Disk or JKDefrag, whichever one works best for 64bit. 0 Kronir
I rather like Auslogics Disk Defrag; its fast and simple. I might have to take a look at PerfectDisk though... Edit: nevermind, not for the $30 they charge for PerfectDisk. I'd like to see what it has to offer to be worth it... Is it really *that* much better? 0 way2quik
So I just used Auslogic Defrag and I noticed it would hang for 4 secs on files with .mkv and .avi extensions. My 1.5TB hard drive, with only 230GB free space (all video files) took 8 hours to completely defrag. 0 08993
Still using JkDefrag for a number of reasons. 1) Invokes the Windows API so it's as safe as houses. 2) There is a 64 bit version. 3) Can set up daily, weekly and monthly routines. I even have one I run when installing/uninstalling stuff. 4) Command line mode works great when invoked by Task Manager. 5) It's free. 6) It's small. 7) No Spyware/Adware/Links. Some drawbacks for the sake of balance. 1) Need to learn the switches to make proper use of it. 0 +Xinok Subscriber² Posted May 20, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted May 20, 2009 I've switched to the newest version of Auslogics, for one reason: I have some large files on my drive which get fragmented often (VirtualBox drives), and this option makes defragmenting so much faster. Its algorithm is super..don't know what it does, but windows explorer becomes super responsive - folders with hundreds of pictures and videos also open up instantly. 0 soldier1st
auslogics. it seemed to help on vista over the built in defrag. used to take a few minutes to resume from sleep but i find most often it comes out in half that time. 0 Pallab
I didn't find any noticeable diff with JKDefrag. Its a pretty limited software. It can't defrag half the files. Doesn't support MFT optimisations and boottime defrag. Also moves large files to the end of the hd. Don't want this, since they can be data files used by games. Its placement logic is flawed.
