Xbox 360 sales top 28 million

Recommended Posts

Xbox 360 sales have topped 28 million units worldwide following the console's most successful year, according to Microsoft.

The company says 360 has now increased its lead over PS3 to eight million units, although it's worth pointing out that Sony's console was released a year later.

Microsoft also said that Xbox Live now has 17 million subscribers, the majority of whom hold paid for gold accounts, and that online sales via the service jumped 84 percent in 2008 from 2007.

"For Xbox, 2008 will be remembered around the world as a pivotal growth year at retail and online - even in the face of tough economic conditions," said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.

"Worldwide, a record number of players flocked to our broadest games and entertainment line-up ever, while the New Xbox Experience thrilled millions of fans by making our console even more engaging. And yet, we've only provided a glimpse into the new world of interactive entertainment that we're imagining. The best of Xbox 360 is yet to come."

So Microsoft's starting 2009 just as it finished 2008, crowing about 360's sales success.

Still, we're not surprised the console's moving large numbers seeing as it's cheap as chips and has a great game line-up. Sing when you're winning (or coming second), we guess, because things can always change.

Just makes me smile a little. MS has made some huge strides with only their second console. Even after they were "doomed to fail" with all the red ring scandal, they made their amends and you can expect a completely better product next generation.

Well said Mystic (Y)

...and Netflix. This time next year I bet the number will be much higher. Netflix is bringing allot of non-gamers into the frey. Netflix just started adding HD content (and a dedicated section), as well. All of this, combined with the wavering enconomy, is keeping people at home. Even at $200, it's cheap entertainment as a gaming console, but all of us old farts that can now stream old episodes of A-Team, MacGyver and Airwolf are buying these things up like crazy! ;-)

Didn't know that Netflix was offering HD. Does it stream well?

My favorite line from Joystiq reporting this:

To give some perspective to these numbers: If you were to stack all the 360s on top of each other, then stack all the PS3s and Wiis next to them, then stack all the PCs and DSs and PSPs in yet another stack and then just walk away, we could probably all get a lot more reading done.

:D

Yes, HD does stream well for me. I'm on 15MB FiOS Fiber with a wireless 360. Looks good to me.

To be honest, I don't think the SD stuff looks too bad either. (I'm on a 56" 1080p RP-LCD).

    • Microsoft is bringing a much-needed Recap app to Teams, here is a first look by Usama Jawad Microsoft Teams is heavily used in work and school environments, and perhaps one of its core but extremely useful features is the ability to record meetings. In past years, Microsoft has further improved upon this functionality by integrating AI, but you do need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license to leverage most, if not all, all of those capabilities. Now, the Redmond tech firm is making another significant enhancement in the area of Teams meeting recordings. Up until now, if you wanted to access Teams recordings, you had to arduously locate the meeting invite and navigate to the dedicated tab, or go to the cloud storage location such as a SharePoint site. This was a rather overwhelming activity, especially if you don't remember the name of the meeting or the meeting occurred quite a while ago. Microsoft is now attempting to solve this problem through a dedicated Recap app that consolidates all your recordings. This centralized experience will allow users to find all recordings from the past 30 days and also offer access to other related services such as transcripts and AI-powered summaries. Customers will have the option to search for recordings, filter them, and review multiple meetings by generating AI-powered podcast-style recaps. The Recap app will list all available recordings in both thumbnail and list views. The former is shown below: And here is how Teams users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license can select multiple recordings to generate a podcast-style audio recap: Microsoft has emphasized that the Recap app is pre-installed in Teams but it will not be pinned by default. Users will able to navigate to the Teams app store from the left rail, and pin it from the apps section. It will be enabled by default for all users once it becomes available. It's worth noting that while Teams recordings and transcripts can be accessed by all users governed by existing permissions, AI-powered features like intelligent summaries, audio recaps, and video recaps will require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. The Recap app will be generally available to Teams users on Windows, Mac, and the web by the end of next month, with mobile support coming soon.
