Which DDR3 memory is better for an i7 build?

Recommended Posts

I am stuck two different kinds of ram that I want to buy for my Intel i7 920 and they are the G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 or the OCZ Platinum 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333. Which one would be better for the i7 and is G.SKILL any good? I have never used them, but I have heard good things about them.

Also should I just overclock these sticks to DDR3 1600 or would it be worth the extra money to get DDR3 1600 out of the box?

Thank you! :)

Support and quality are pretty much the same across all of these major companies. Price is normally the deciding factor unless you're one of those people who like having a "favorite company" (I'm almost certain some people manufacturer this stuff in their head for some odd reason or another..)

if you have time, kindly read this amazing article Memory and Performance: The Bottom Line

Yeah I know there is not that big of a diffrence in 1333 and 1600 in benches, but if you are to overclock an i7 past a certain point it needs a certain speed of memory. Like if you want to OC the i7 with 1333 memory, you won't be able to go beyond a 166 bclock without OCing the memory itself.

So I was asking would it be better to buy 1333Ghz memory and OC that or buy 1600Ghz memory and pay the extra for it.

i usually choose a favourite company based on product quality and customer support

if i get a product of poor quality (rp-hc500) and the place i bought it from has great customer support (youprice) then instead of me just getting a refund i'll be happy to purchase another product from them and continue buying from them if needed

Back in the day I use to by Corsair and man was it expensive but lately I have decided to give GSkill a try after reading many user posts on their experience and I have no problems at all.

I have GSkill in my latest build with I7 920. My wife has a 9650 with GSkill and no problems. If I was you I would read up in forums for the motherboard you will be getting and the memory to see if they are not compatible but you should have no problems.
