THE DivX Encoding Thread

Question

Ok, so I've gotten some questions from people about encoding DivX movies since I posted in this thread:

https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?s=&a...ST&f=12&t=71012

I've created this thread in hopes that those who do already encode movies via DivX will post their setups here.

If you have just a question or a tip, please put QUESTION or TIP at the top of your post (size is LARGE).

DO NOT DISCUSS BOOTLEG MOVIES; TRADING VIA P2P, IRC, OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT IN THIS THREAD!

This is about backing up your movies to DivX and also encoding homemade movies to DivX. Personally, I typically only watch the DVD version of my DVDs once. Then they get ripped to DivX and put on a USB2.0 HD so I can watch them on any computer in the house (or TV). This reduces scratching and wear and tear on the DVD itself.

Format your posts like this:

Ripping Program:

Encoding Program:

Settings:(screenshot{s} will do)

Any Notes Or Questions:

Mine:

Ripping Program: DVD Decrypter ( http://www.dvddecrypter.com/download.asp )

Encoding Program: Vidomi ( http://www.vidomi.com/ )

Settings: See Screenshot

Notes:

If you get garbled sound after encoding -

  • Update your lame codecs here (there are like, 4 lame files in the Vidomi directory, just copy over them with these): http://mitiok.free.fr/lame-3.93.1.zip
  • Change the output frequency from "Same as source" to "44100"

I don't use GMC or Quarter Pixel because they cause stuttering. Even on a 1Ghz comp. There's also no quality gain using them IMO.

TIP

The best way to test settings is to rip a small something from a DVD. Instead of ripping the entire movie area, rip an intro or some other SMALL clip from the dvd (there are other parts you can rip aside from the main movie file).

Then just encode that over and over with different settings and compare quality. Saves time, saves space, etc.

I usually rip like a Dreamworks intro or something like that. Lasts about 15 seconds, has enough sound and movement to see if there will be any noticable probs, etc. Fox intro isn't that good. Just those lights going back and forth.

I don't like VIDOMI at all since they "stole" much of their code from the X-Vid project.

Besides Gordian Knot is by far superior IMO ...
