taskbar running programs from right to left

Recommended Posts

Windows default behaviour is to display running taskbar programs from left to right, starting at the start button and moving out to the right. I want to reverse that, and have it starting at the right, at the system tray, and moving to the left. Anyone know how this might be possible, the simplist way possible with the least invasive third party app (if necessary).

Thanks in advance!

Custom Shell... good luck =)

Yea, eh? Damn... well, thanks for responding. At least now I know I can't do it and I'll have to figure out something else. 14 years of Windows and we still don't have a customizable task bar / start menu system without the use for third party utilities.

I'm actually terribly happy with the Windows taskbar / start button / system tray, I just need it the reverse of what it is now. In fact, I don't really want it left to right, I want it top to bottom when it's on the left hand side, but that's the same thing. I might re-evualute Rocketdock, but I don't really care much for it and I didn't like how system tray icons were handled at the time. Oh well, thanks anyhow guys.

You can ghetto rig it by placing a bunch of quick launch shortcuts on the left side, and dragging the "running programs" section to the right side, but it won't actually set each launched program directly at the right side, just right-ish.

Maybe you could check out a shell like litestep. I'm not sure it even runs on new computers but back in the day I played with it lot. Also used Ashton Shell until the demo ran out.

It still works, a new build was released a couple of weeks ago on www.lsdev.org adding support for Vista and Win7.

    • You could disable this "functionality/feature/whatever" with 2 registry keys, ages ago.
    • My Photos app is version 2026.11050.1001.0 and it remembers the window size and position. My Snipping Tool is version 11.2602.49.0 and it can capture the taskbar.

    • On xiaomi hyperos there's also an option to disable google assistant. I've got everything disabled. Only thing I do have installed is a web wrapped for duck.ai which claims to let you use various AIs anonymously
    • I need to understand the rationale of not shipping all of these K2 improvements in a single update/release. It's giving "we will fix Windows 11 but no commitments". It seems to me that they just announce these improvements just to appease the community.
