Is there a solution?- .dat files change to .txt files

I sent someone a portable app, and the .dat files it uses show up as .txt and she can't rename the extension, so the program doesn't work. She's at an office and maybe the admin is doing this. Any help would be appreciated.

Can't rename the extension or doesn't know how? To rename it she will need to make sure she deselects 'hide known file types' in folder options. If doesn't have access to that she could use a batch file although I'm not sure how to write one.

Hi. He's talking about me here. When I click to "save as" the dat file he sent, it wants to be saved as a txt document. Even if I rename it to whatever.dat, and choose 'all file types', it still saves as a txt doc. So I do know how to rename, but it won't become a dat file. I don't know if the admins here might block us from saving dat files. Normally when I try and do something that's not allowed, I get an error. This time there's no error. The dats just insist on saving as txt files.

There's probably no fix, but we figured we'd throw it out and see if anyone had any ideas. Thanks. :)

Have you tried renaming outside of the program you are saving with file with? I.e save in the program as the .txt file then use the above method in folder options to change the .txt file to .dat.

heres an idea, just zip, rar, 7z or whatever other compression program is your fav and send it that way.. then extract.

The DAT file format is a non-standard file format which is usually program or application specific. Simply renaming a file with the .dat extension will not change it to that file format. Your best bet is to send the DAT files in a compressed (zipped) folder.

Thanks for all the replies. But I officially give up. I don't know if the problem even IS the dat files, but I can't get the program to work.
