First Mac Applications

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Just wondering if you could help me out here, my partner and I have just bought a brand new iMac 24" :D Very very happy on getting it.

I have downloaded (on PC) various Mac applications that are leopard compatible (is that right)

Here are the list of apps I have downloaded in terms of moving from PC to Mac :)

Adium - Instant Messenger program, seems to be very popular :D

ChaChing - Finance/Budget program, I'm not going to buy it yet, just want to know if there are free options

CoverSutra (got it via that free period, so no BowTie for me)

Disco - Very simple CD/DVD Burning program, It seems to be pretty damn cool, of course, unless there is another option.

Growl - Seems that Adium uses it for notifications and stuff.

MainMenu - I read on a Mac forum that it's like an automated CCleaner equivalent.

OnyX - Allows me to change a hell of a lot of things. (I love tinkering, haha)

Transmission - Obvious torrent client, I liked it on PC, and uTorrent is taking too long.

VideoLan - Obvious media player, is there another one like it that doesn't need to use QT4 interface?

I'm still looking for some good apps :)

IRC client, RSS reader.

I'm also considering download the night WebKit for Safari, is that a good option? It works well on my work PC.

And also other apps that may be of use to me :)

Oh and another silly question... iWorks or Office2008 ?

I have it in my head that iWorks is about as 'awesome' as Microsoft Works, lol.

Thanks guys, and I'm proud to say I'm a Mac owner :D

I'd stay away from Disco unless you want to create a bunch of coasters. The built in Disk Utility is perfect for burning stuff.

Coasters?.. please explain.

I love Disco, been using it for a while now, has not failed on me.

I have both iWork and Office 08 on my Macs. I use iWork 98% of the time because Office sucks really bad on Macs. Its so slow and crashes a lot for me. I just open if I absolutely need to.

Coasters as in screwing up a burn and rendering the disk unusable. You must be lucky if it works fine for you. Knock on wood, water your lucky bamboo, do whatever you do to keep your luck going.

And what about the iWorks vs Office2008 thing?
Pages '09 is suposed to be better with .doc now.

If you use office for your personal use you can get iWork, but if you use it for others that work on Windows, I recomends Office 2008, even if it sucks as a program. This will ensure a maximum of compatibility. But to be fair, neither Pages '09 nor Word '08 beat Word '07.

Office is the only thing that I can says that Windows still get the upper hand :(

Office 2008 is very slow for me too and instable. You're better of using Openoffice.

Transmission is the best torrent client, if your looking for a usenet client i recommend Unison.

I use Colloquy for irc, dunno if its the best but it has a nice and easy interface.

If you want to stream .wmv files in your browser, install Flip4mac WMV

You do know that disco makes sure that your burning is successful... right?

And? Just because it verifies the disc doesn't mean it can magically fix any burning errors after the fact. You're better off going with what giga posted, Burn. All for the great price of free.
