hopp58902 Member Posted February 6, 2009 Member Share Posted February 6, 2009 (edited) Alpha 1 WAS huge. :p The first thing you'll notice when downloading is the filesize - Alpha 1 was 982MB. This alpha, although still big, is 824MB -- 158MB smaller. No packages were removed, hal was added, dbus was added, and both are now started at boot time. Also, if an ethernet connection is detected at eth0, the IP address will be determined using DHCP. You might have also noticed the GRUB screen. Yeah. It is beautiful. ;) Thanks to rson451, we have an almost working X server. Typing "startx" will load up some nice xterms. In my testing, the keyboard and mouse didn't work. If anyone gets the keyboard and mouse to work, please tell us! We'll put it right in - this is our top priority right now. And, as a final disclaimer - You are about to download Shift Linux which doesn't have a working X Server (GUI) yet. This is for testing. Please don't complain about how you just downloaded Alpha 1. :p http://shift.itsredegg.com/releases/1.0/sh...inux-1.0-a2.iso EDIT: Don't waste your time. Alpha 3 will be out as soon as I upload it. WITH WORKING X. Edited February 15, 2009 by CrimsonRedMk Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/732168-shift-linux-10-alpha-2/ Share on other sites

hopp58902 Member Posted February 6, 2009 Author Member Share Posted February 6, 2009 Keyboard and mouse are broken when you start X by typing "startx". Otherwise, you're in a bash shell. rson451
What's this firefly linux about? From what I understand, it's going to be a lightweight version of Shift, more or less. rson451
I believe a decision was made to hold off on releasing it. I'm not sure what the reasoning is, they may have something special going on that I'm not aware of. Simon Veteran Posted February 9, 2009 Veteran Share Posted February 9, 2009 We want this to be a solid release our application and feature developers can use, so that our next release after alpha 3 will have some more user friendly and intriguing, original features. Hopefully you guys understand that. We want this done right, not like we've done with past shift's, ubuntu and morphix.
