Port Forwarding - Bit Comet

Recommended Posts

So I need to forward ports on my BT HomeHub so that BitComet functions properly and gets optimal download speeds.

I have done everything I am told to on PortForward.com and when I go back to BitComet the usual and also abysimal download speeds of around 5kb/s increase to around 30 or 40kb/s whilst it tries to detect if the Listen port is blocked.

After a while it concludes that it's still blocked and download speeds plummit to around 4 or 5 kb/s again.

Has anyone else had this problem or do they know how to resolve it?

Thanks in advance,

Richard.

I would like to point out that I use Bit Comet for wholly legal downloads / file sharing and this topic does not concern copyright infringement or warez of any kind (Y)

So do you have any other devices (wireless router, voip device, etc) between you and the homehub?

Are you running any software firewalls? that would also need to allow for the traffic.

Have you verified with something like canyouseeme.org that your ports are indeed forwarded and listening on the machine your running bitcomet on?

What port are you trying to use? Its possible that your ISP blocks this port? Or maybe does filtering on p2p apps no matter what port they run on, etc.

Also once you have port forwarding working don?t forget to enable encryption, BT try to block torrent traffic but enabling encryption works fine for my mate who?s on BT.

Without he his downloads never pass around 5kb a second.

True a:)o :) First try uPnP then this. This way we know if its the ports or if your ISP is blocking torrent traffic.

Well I've changed to uTorrent and my download speeds are a hell of a lot faster, like first torrent I'm trying, Notorious BIG Discography is ~ 60kb/s :D

I've enabled uPnP on both uTorrent and BT HomeHub.

However mayeb I can get even better download speeds as uTorrent still reports that my incoming port 64500 is still blocked.

After following Port Forward instructions for uTorrent and BT Home Hub again it still says blocked, Port Forward.com tells me to disable uPnP but I have it enabled on both the torrent client and router as recommended in this thread.

I have Kaspersky Firewall, is the right thing to do there, create an exception rule where it allows incoming and outbound TCP connections whereRemote Port: 64500, Local Port 64500 ?

EDIT:

u Torrent now reports that the network connection "OK" and working like it should, little worried still should I have completely opened that port on the firewall or does that create a vulnerability?

EDIT 2:

Seconds after making EDIT one the green light in u Torrent turns orange again and wanrs that connections on that there are no longer any incoming connections, down speeds are still around 60kb/s though.

? so how does "I use Bit Comet for wholly legal downloads"

equal --> first torrent I'm trying, Notorious BIG Discography is ~ 60kb/s

I was not aware that Notorious Big placed all of his music in the public domain? ;)

As to your firewall setting -- YES if your going to be using a port for something, ie downloading torrents -- Then DUH!! it has to be open on your firewall! for it work correctly.

If your behind a NAT router, the need of a software firewall can be debated for sure.. I would suggest you disable it completely for testing.. 60K/sec is actually pretty freaking slow for a torrent that has decent peers and seeds.

I was seeing over 500KB/sec the other day, what is your internet speed??

And sure someone suggested UPnP, I'm not a fan -- since you have no idea what ports an application might open, etc.. Unless you have specific need, its just easier to manually configure the ports you need to forward to the machines you want.

Apologies I didn't make myself clear.

What I did was go to PirateBay and find a highly seeded torrent just to give it a go with u orrent to test the speeds, no use downloading something with only a few seeders if I'm trying to find how to make it download as fast as possible.

I have now cancelled that torrent since I've pretty much finished setting it up.

I use torrent clients to download Nince Inch nails music, such as the free stuff like Ghosts and The Slip and South park episodes which are all free to download legally.

If your looking to test your torrent speeds.. I would suggest something like a linux distro.

As you can see -- thats some SPEED ;)

Ah yes, that'd be better, thank you.

Congratulations on your fast internet connection, where I live I can't actually get anything over half a meg broadband ;)

As I was trying to say, 60 could be the limit for you depending on your net connection.. But trying a known FAST torrent is much better to test with.

If your on a 500kbit connection, then yeah 60KB/sec is about the best your going to get.

uPnP was a solution just to see what it was: Ports or software. We have now concluded that it is the ports.

Do NOT use uPnP as it is a security hole and can be attacked. Port forward the way god ment for ports to be forwared.
