vista home premium SMB connections limit

Recommended Posts

ok so vista home premium has a limit of 10 simultaneous peer2peer connection limit. so what does this actually mean? i have a wireless lan with 12 computers and we all browse the internet on each of the 12 computers at the same time, so will only 10 users be able to do this simultaneously?

what happens if we download using a download accelerator that opens 10 connections so for 12 pc's it will be 120 connections?

if this smb limit only affects file sharing on a lan, what happens if 12 people want to download a file on a lan, will only 10 be able to do this simultaneously and the other 2 will have to wait for two people to stop downloading until they can start? if the other 2 have to wait, does vista show a popup box telling them this?

Just to be clear, you're talking about the device connections limit, right? From Vista Home Premium EULA:

DEVICE CONNECTIONS. You may allow up to 10 other devices to access the software installed

with the licensed device to use File Services, Print Services, Internet Information Services and

Internet Connection Sharing and Telephony Services.

It means exactly that..up to 10 devices (or computers) can access your Vista Home Premium computer at the same time. So if you have a database on your Vista Home Premium-based computer, up to 10 people can connect to it simultaneously. The 11th person trying to connect will get a error saying that the connection failed, or something similar.

Same goes if your Vista Home Premium-based machine is acting as a file server..up to 10 people can connect to your computer to work on files, the 11th will be unable to connect. This of course gets tricky because computers don't always leave their connection open, so sometimes it'll "look" like you have more people connected when really only 10 have an open connection currently.

Basically, if you need more than 10 connections you really should be running a server.

Keep in mind the device connection limit is per machine, not like per network (assuming that's what you're thinking?) So using the internet isn't really relevant, unless there's something in your setup you did not mention. eg: Are all your computers conecting to the internet via 1 Vista Home Premium computer, like is one set up as an ICS server?

Assuming the file is on one Vista Home Premium computer, & you are attempting to simultaneously copy the same file using 12 other computers via a folder shared on the network, then yeah only 10 would be able to start the copy. The other two would get a connection failed error when they attempt to access the share folder, let alone try to copy the file..they'd have to wait until a connection frees up.

what about if 12 of us wanted to play wow over our wireless lan, so would 12 computers be able to play wow over a lan or only 10?

12. Unless the WOW server is running Vista Home Premium, which seems very, very unlikely. If that were the case the WOW server could only host up to 10 people at the same time :p

I think you're still not understanding..the limit is for each computer (with Vista Home Premium installed). Not per network, not per wireless LAN, not per WOW server. It doesn't have anything to do with getting online or using the internet.

Think of a server running Vista Home Premium and X number of computers attempting to simultaneously connect to that one server. Eventually the device connection limit would kick in on the server if more than 10 computers are attempting connections to it.

    • So they saved ton of money by using AI resulting in loss of crap load of money in recalls and expenses. Bravo. Management needs to be replaced by AI, not engineers.
    • Ditto that, I have a few Alexa devices around the house to control lighting and such for a disabled person I live with, and it shows a *lot* of ads on the display. The dots are simple but effective. A lot cheaper too.
    • Go for a Echo Dot or Pop instead. These Echo shows just advertise to you.

NetSpeedTray v1.3.3: The Updater Fix A stabilization release that repairs a critical regression in v1.3.2: the app shipped without OpenSSL, which silently broke every HTTPS request — including the built-in update checker (the "Could not check for updates" error many of you hit). This release restores it, hardens the build so it can't happen again, and fixes a startup crash plus four other reported bugs. Changes: Fixed update checking — Resolved a critical issue that prevented the app from checking for updates ("Could not check for updates"). Fixed startup crash with Auto-Cycling — The app no longer crashes on launch after enabling Cycle display mode. Fixed incorrect network speeds on 10GbE adapters — Multi-gigabit network cards now display speeds correctly instead of being stuck at 0. Improved color coding — Default color is shown when idle, and color/threshold changes now apply immediately without restarting. Fullscreen visibility fix — The widget now correctly stays visible over fullscreen apps when Keep Visible is enabled. Improved AMD Ryzen temperature detection — More reliable CPU temperature monitoring for Ryzen processors. Cleaner upgrades — Installer now removes outdated application files during upgrades, preventing DLL/version conflicts while preserving user settings. Improved stability — Fixed potential DLL loading issues by excluding critical OpenSSL and NumPy components from UPX compression. Better settings window — Scrollbars removed and layout improved for a cleaner experience. Localization improvements — Updated translations and completed missing UI text across all supported languages. More reliable releases — Added regression tests covering recent critical fixes, bringing the test suite to 196 passing tests.
