Sorry to mention a mac here, but I know in OS X you can network two computers via just access points by enabling internet sharing and selecting the internet source and access point for broadcasting so im pretty sure you should be able to in Windows XP, don't know about anything below it though. If it's not built-in to the OS there should be a freeware or cheap app that would allow you to configure it this way. I'd say just get the two from a place that allows returns and if they don't work, send em back. Just remember, you'll have to keep the main PC on all the time otherwise the other two won't have net access.

yea i think if i you use ics you can bridge together to wireless cards together but u said u want to computer u might run into a problem.

*only is you go the ICS route*Since u said u had a linksys router make sure you go in and chaneg the default lan ip to be 192.168.0.1 and not 192.168.1.1

There is a SIMPLE RULE OF THUMB ABOUT WIRELESS

YOU NEED AT LEAST TWO WIRELESS TO DEVICES TO GET WIRELESS!!

If you have a router, w/o a wap and just a USB Wireless Adapter, you get poop OK.

You still Need the WAP for the router.

You to have something to send and recieve the wireless signal.

The Entire Wireless Router's are cheaper than just bying the add on Ethernet WAP.

Linksys BEFW11S4 version 2 or 3. will do the job.

When building my Wireless network I have found out two things. One of which is about Blitzz.

Blittz makes a great Mobile card, but their other equipment with the PCI Wireless card being especially noted; because it looses signal often, even if it's within close open proximity of the wireless router.

I would use a different brand, namely Linksys or Netgear. These two brands are excellent quality at reasonable prices. If you were to pay 10 - 20 bucks more (on average) to get the above mentioned, it would be worth it to you for 3 reasons.

1. Quality + Wi-Fi certified + Docs

2. WEP Encryption can Generate HEX (this comes in really handy)

3. Software is better and updated more frequently with support to boot

If you have a wired hub and want to share with a wireless device, you have a couple of options.

Get a Wireless Router and a Wireless Device (USB, PCI, Mobile; they are usally within the same price range)

Get a Wireless Device and another Wireless Device

Probably the easiest to setup and deploy are the USB Wireless, if you choose this option, go with the linksys because they seem to be more up-to-date on the firmware and drivers than Netgear is (only marginally so)

You would run these two devices on Ad-Hoc to have them talk to each other, and then everything else included with getting the internet piped through the wireless is post mortem

If you have Windows XP bridging the two devices it won't work the way you want it to, so you would use the ICS, which is available on all versions of windows since 98 SE. Since ICS throws an IP to a connecting device that listens for DHCP, it will seamless connect to a Mac regardless, if you are using a windows machine as a gateway.

Edit: The only other thing I can think of regarding this, is, that sometime you would need to manually enter in the gateway IP for it to acquire the DHCP information.

If you are using a Mac as a Gateway, I'm sure there is a similiar configuration for Internet sharing, I'm 80% sure Mac OS.X will have this. Both should be easy to setup.

you can watch your local best buy or circuit city, open box buys come with the same warranty as a new part, only difference is, it left the store for some reason. both my router and my sony video cam i got open box buy, i saved 100+ on the router and 400 on the camera. depending on if its best buy or cicuit city, you can save more than listed...for instance, CC wanted 1200 for a new camera, there was an open box for 1050, the sales girl told me shed give it to me for 1000, i said 750, she said 850, i said 800 and stated that i could get a new one for that via the web...i got it for 800 and away i went, she gets her commission back on the returned item and i get a cheap camera. linksys and d-link are notorious for mail in rebates...just keep watching and you'll score one for at least 40% off.

    • +1 for LibreOffice. At least you should try it. The one from M$ is just a bloated turd at this point.
    • Yeah, I've had a Recycle Bin on my taskbar since XP and till last year when I got a new laptop with Windows 11. It was especially useful for touch workflow - I could drag files into Recycle Bin from anywhere because my Taskbar is always visible, unlike desktop icons.
    • Not after SP1. There was a legitimate file copy issue prior.
    • Microsoft 365 security in the spotlight after Washington Post hack by Paul Hill The Washington Post has come under cyberattack which saw Microsoft email accounts of several journalists get compromised. The attack, which was discovered last Thursday, is believed to have been conducted by a foreign government due to the topics the journalists cover, including national security, economic policy, and China. Following the hack, the passwords on the affected accounts were reset to prevent access. The fact that a Microsoft work email account was potentially hacked strongly suggests The Washington Post utilizes Microsoft 365, which makes us question the security of Microsoft’s widely used enterprise services. Given that Microsoft 365 is very popular, it is a hot target for attackers. Microsoft's enterprise security offerings and challenges As the investigation into the cyberattack is still ongoing, just how attackers gained access to the accounts of the journalists is unknown, however, Microsoft 365 does have multiple layers of protection that ought to keep journalists safe. One of the security tools is Microsoft Defender for Office 365. If the hackers tried to gain access with malicious links, Defender provides protection against any malicious attachments, links, or email-based phishing attempts with the Advanced Threat Protection feature. Defender also helps to protect against malware that could be used to target journalists at The Washington Post. Another security measure in place is Entra ID which helps enterprises defend against identity-based attacks. Some key features of Entra ID include multi-factor authentication which protects accounts even if a password is compromised, and there are granular access policies that help to limit logins from outside certain locations, unknown devices, or limit which apps can be used. While Microsoft does offer plenty of security technologies with M365, hacks can still take place due to misconfiguration, user-error, or through the exploitation of zero-day vulnerabilities. Essentially, it requires efforts from both Microsoft and the customer to maintain security. Lessons for organizations using Microsoft 365 The incident over at The Washington Post serves as a stark reminder that all organizations, not just news organizations, should audit and strengthen their security setups. Some of the most important security measures you can put in place include mandatory multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all users, especially for privileged accounts; strong password rules such as using letters, numbers, and symbols; regular security awareness training; and installing any security updates in a timely manner. Many of the cyberattacks that we learn about from companies like Microsoft involve hackers taking advantage of the human in the equation, such as being tricked into sharing passwords or sharing sensitive information due to trickery on behalf of the hackers. This highlights that employee training is crucial in protecting systems and that Microsoft’s technologies, as advanced as they are, can’t mitigate all attacks 100 percent of the time.
