I've never even heard of this book.

It's one of the most well known children's books ever. I have a 40th anniversary edition around here somewhere.

I was really disappointed to hear that they had gone back and shot almost half the movie because it was "too dark." It will be interesting to find out what was changed.

Actually, that was just a rumor. They kept Spike Jonze's original vision intact but filmed 2 extra scenes for it afterwards.

It looks bizarre. I've read the picture story as a kid yet I have no desire to see this movie. Perhaps it's because the wild things look so out of place in a non-animated movie.

Where the Wild Things Are 10 minute video described.

As the young Max Records steps out onto the stage of Hall H he looks out at a couple thousand people but is more self-possessed than a lot of the adult actors we’ve seen stroll out into the Comic Con spotlight. There’s a brief ‘wow’ but he never looks shaken. Records, who we saw briefly in The Brothers Bloom and stars as Max in Where the Wild Things Are, has a quote from Maurice Sendak written on his hand. “You know I really love this movie and I hope people like it, because if not they can all go straight to hell.” Beyond that Max didn’t talk much; instead he introduced three long clips from Wild Things that suggest the movie is tender, adventurous and, yeah, dark and maybe even a bit dangerous.

In a short video showing behind the scenes footage and interviews with Spike Jonze and original author Maurice Sendak, that author says that Jonze’s film has an emotional, spiritual and visual life that embodies the book. The footage certainly displays a deep emotional life; there are intimations of death and decay that you don’t often find in a film based on a kids’ book.

Basically, we saw three big sequences. The first is the one that follows from the moment that opens the trailer, where the wild thing Carol (James Gandolfini) is carrying Max through the forest. He’s introducing Max to his kingdom, and as they wander from forest to desert the conversation goes from funny and wry to a surprisingly touching discussion of how things end. Carol laments that the desert was once rock and will eventually be dust; Max shocks him by mentioning that even the sun will eventually die. How could that be, asks Carol? You’re the King, and I’m big! Let’s live!

Then we saw another sequence hinted at in the trailer, where the wild things are thowing each other around, playing in the forsest. They form a big dogpile with Max at the bottom; he’s initially almost frightened, then grows comfortable as the piled wild things form a safe little cave in which he hides. Face to face with KW (Lauren Ambrose) Max talks a bit about his home life and we see a lot of the range of emotion that Records can really project. Frankly, I’m shocked that there was ever any doubt about his performance, because what we see here looks really impressive.

Finally, we saw a third sequence clipped in the trailer, where Max is directing the wild things to build a fortress. It’ll have tunnels, and a laboratory where they can build robots and all sorts of great stuff. They create that sweeping, massive structure of sticks and trees that you might have seen in the trailer and a few stills; here Spike Jonze’s visual sensibility really leaps forward, as we get to see what could be the perfect fantasy childhood fortress of solitude.

Throughout, there was music that sounded at times like additional Arcade Fire songs, but also some of what must be the music created by Carter Burwell and Karen O from the Yeah, Yeah Yeahs. Everything we heard fit the footage very well and added to the sense of a fantasy land that is built on a less than stable foundation. None of the sequences we saw directly showed how things must eventually fall apart; you could watch these moments and wonder where the movie’s drama comes in. But look at the trailer again and you’ll see Max’s kingdom crumbling, and I can see why Sendak might describe the movie as dangerous. Where the Wild Things Are appears to have a real emotional depth, like a dream of a strange, wild forest withbright grottoes and shadowy, frightening reaches.

I’ll say this: people have evidently felt completely transported by Avatar, which left me relatively unmoved. So far, Where the Wild Things Are is the movie that really seems to have been shot in a totally new environment, with creatures and places actually exist outside the film frame.

Now, with the end of the Extended Security Updates program quickly approaching, Microsoft is making an important adjustment. Users discovered that the official support article for the program now lists a new end-of-support date: The Extended Security Updates program is not a new concept. It has been an official way for business consumers to continue receiving critical updates for unsupported Microsoft products for many years. However, all this time, it was a business-only, paid feature. With Windows 10, Microsoft brought ESU to regular consumers, allowing them to get security updates for Windows 10 past October 2025 essentially for free.       Sony announces Bungie layoffs that will affect "significant number of employees" by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Sony today announced that major layoffs are happening at its first-party studio Bungie, the developer that has spawned series like Halo, Destiny, and Marathon over the past decades. The news arrives just weeks after Bungie delivered the final update to Destiny 2, and it's that team being hit with the layoffs the most. CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Hermen Hulst revealed the staff reduction today, calling it "painful news." "Over the past several months, together with Bungie leadership, we reviewed the studio’s long-term direction, development priorities, resource needs, and role within our broader portfolio strategy," said Hulst, explaining the decision. "We explored multiple alternatives before concluding that a reduction was necessary to align the studio’s resources with its current priorities and long-term goals." The layoffs will be hitting "a significant number of employees" across most of the Destiny franchise development team. It doesn't look like Sony is planning to continue the series following Destiny 2's sunsetting update. The studio is said to be in early stages of looking at other projects to pivot to, but it's said that keeping the size of the team at current levels is no longer feasible. "We know this decision has a profound impact on the people affected, their families, friends, and teammates," said Bungie leadership in a separate message on social media. "While these changes are necessary to best position the studio now and for the future, that does not lessen the difficulty of this moment or the impact it has on those affected." At the same time, "some" of the Marathon development team are also affected by the layoffs. The recently released multiplayer-only extraction shooter title hasn't seen a big boom of players either, but the company is reportedly hoping that the live service experience will pick up players with future updates.

      Microsoft adds reusable skills and finance data connectors to Copilot in Excel by Karthik Mudaliar Microsoft is giving Copilot in Excel a collection of new features aimed squarely at finance teams. The update introduces reusable instructions for common tasks, connections to services such as FactSet and Morningstar, and a better way to review what Copilot intends to do before it starts changing a workbook. The most interesting addition is 'Skills' finally coming to Copilot in Excel. Skills let companies teach Copilot how to handle a recurring process, so employees do not need to write the same detailed prompt every month. Users can create skills that can specify the steps Copilot should follow, along with the required layout, formulas, and formatting. Microsoft says users can create their own skills by saving a SKILL.md file in OneDrive. The file is written using Markdown and tells Copilot when and how to perform the task. Once it is available, a user can select the skill in the Copilot pane or mention it in a prompt using the @ symbol. There is also a library of prebuilt finance skills for customers who do not want to create their own. Microsoft plans to let developers distribute additional skills through the Microsoft Marketplace and the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, with LSEG, Ramp, Rogo, samaya.ai, Velixo, and Vena among the first partners involved. The company says that it is also expanding the external data that Copilot can access from inside Excel. New connectors are being added for CB Insights, Daloopa, FactSet, Morningstar, PitchBook, and S&P Global data through technology developed by Kensho. There is a catch, however. Accessing these services may require a separate subscription from the relevant data provider, so a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence will not necessarily unlock all of them. FactSet is also only available in preview for now, with general availability planned for July. Microsoft is also trying to make Copilot’s workbook edits easier to inspect. Users can switch to a planning mode that shows which sheets, cell ranges, formulas, and assumptions Copilot intends to work with before it begins making changes. Once the work is complete, the Show Changes pane can distinguish edits made by Copilot from those made by human collaborators. The update continues Microsoft’s push to turn Excel Copilot from a chatbot into an agent that can carry out longer tasks. The company previously added an Agent Mode capable of planning and completing multi-step Excel work. Microsoft also recently acquired financial AI startup Fintool, another indication that finance is becoming a key target for its Excel AI strategy. Prebuilt skills, personalization, workbook rules, external connectors, planning mode, and Copilot attribution in Show Changes are generally available to Microsoft 365 Copilot customers using Excel on the web, Windows, and macOS. Custom skills are initially available to Microsoft 365 Insiders on Windows and Mac starting today. Microsoft plans to make them generally available across Windows, Mac, and the web over the next month. Partner-built skills are expected during the third quarter of the year. Availability may still differ depending on region and licensing.
