Men in Black 3 Script in the Works by Tropic Thunder Writer Ethan Cohen

We learned that Columbia was finally moving forward with a third Men in Black movie back in April, but at the time there was no script attached to the project. While there still isn?t much to report yet, we have learned that they?ve tapped the now-hot writer Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Idiocracy) for the screenplay. There?s no word yet on Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones? involvement, but I can?t imagine they would bring the franchise back without featuring them in some capacity.

I?m also hoping that they?re able to bring Barry Sonnenfeld back to direct. He?s been working on the television end of things recently (we can thank him for Pushing Daisies gloriously candy-colored style), and I?m sure he?d like to get another feature under his belt to distance himself from the Robin Williams fiasco RV.

The studio is mum on what MiB3 may actually be about, but I do hope they avoid the usual pitfall of making the original young upstart a veteran who must then train more young blood. (I?m also saying this because I?m hoping we won?t get a chance to see Shia LaBeouf as a bumbling young agent.)

Cohen?s involvement with the film is a sign that it will probably be better than the disappointing Men in Black sequel. He?s a graduate of the Mike Judge school of comedy?having worked on Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill, in addition to Idiocracy. In my book, that?s good people.

Strangely enough, I?m actually sort of excited for a third Men in Black film. I loved the original when it first came out (admittedly, haven?t revisited it in years), and I think the series deserves a better successor than what we got with the sequel. The concept is undoubtedly ripe for further exploration.

Without those two it won't be the same. Those two make MIB what it is.

Awesome news! I must've seen the first Men in Black a million times as a kid. And coincidentally, I just watched Men in Black II again for the first time in a couple of years. I really hope Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back. Without them, it wouldn't be a Men in Black movie.

Josh Brolin answering the call for 'Men in Black 3'?

Recent L.A. Times addition Steven Zeitchik has another casting scoop for Hero Complex:

Josh Brolin could be going from "W." to K.

With "No Country for Old Men," "Milk," "W.," and, of course, "The Goonies" on his resume, Brolin's filmography speaks for itself. Now he may be adding "Men in Black 3" to that estimable list.

Brolin The actor is being considered for a role that would have him donning the black suit and shades for the third installment of the sci-fi comedy franchise. His exact part is a matter of discussion, but in recent days there's been chatter in Hollywood development circles of a few possibilities: He could play a new single-monikered government agent, with Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K passing the baton to Brolin's character. Or he could play Agent K as a young man. Or something else entirely.

Whatever the part, Brolin could be playing against some star power: Will Smith is expected to return in the new "MIB" as Agent J.

It wouldn't mark the first time J ran missions with someone else. In the second film, his character briefly chased aliens and erased memories with other partners before Jones' Agent K came out of retirement.

Sony is currently contemplating a production start for the picture in 2010 (though it has yet to be greenlit). The film, which is based on a script by "Tropic Thunder" writer Etan Cohen and which tentatively has Barry Sonnenfeld coming back to direct, could shoot at least partly in New York.

One issue that still needs to be worked out: scheduling. Brolin has lately given Nicolas Cage a run for his money as the hardest-working man in show business, starring in the comic-book western "Jonah Hex" and the sequel to Oliver Stone's "Wall Street." Both of those films have wrapped, but he's signed on for a few more meaty roles that could shoot in the first part of 2010, including the Coen brothers' remake of "True Grit" and the Mafia crime drama "Cartel."

If Tommy Lee Jones isn't in it, or not a major part of it, forget it. I wouldn't even watch it without TLJ in it, even if Will Smith does come back. Josh Brolin doesn't make it any less disappointing if TLJ isn't in it or in a smaller role.

Hell no. I hated that movie, A LOT! He better not screw this up.

Apparently Sacha Baron Cohen and Jermaine Clement are competing for a role.

Columbia Pictures is officially having conversations regarding their third entry in the Men in Black franchise as we're being told by industry insiders that in addition to Jonah Hex cowboy Josh Brolin likely (still unconfirmed) to star, they've shown strong interest in both Sacha Baron Cohen (Sweeney Todd, Bruno) and Jemaine Clement ("The Flight of the Conchords") for a character named "Yaz" (a new agent?). Neither are locked, this should be taken strictly as rumor for now. Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Igor, Idiocracy) wrote the screenplay. Shooting was originally rumored to begin this spring. The 1997 Men in Black grossed nearly $600m worldwide, while its 2002 sequel took in $440m. Why so long for another sequel? Who knows!

Will Smith 'may leave Men In Black 3'

Will Smith could reportedly drop out of Men In Black 3 to star in fantasy adventure The City That Sailed.

According to Variety, Smith has offers on the table for both the Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox projects and has yet to decide which to commit to.

Smith's Men In Black director Barry Sonnenfeld is signed up for the third movie, while City is still seeking a helmer to bring Andrew Niccol's (The Truman Show) script to the screen.

The latter film focuses on a New York-based magician and his estranged daughter who lives in the UK. When the girl discovers a magic room, Manhattan separates and starts to drift across the Atlantic. Smith's I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence has previously been linked to the movie.

Smith starred as Agent Jay in the first two Men In Black outings, which grossed a combined $1bn worldwide.

    • EA launches in-game advertising platform for brands to "connect with audiences" by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The gaming giant Electronic Arts is exploring more ways to inject real-life brands into its games. Announced today as EA Advertising, the new platform is attempting to make it easier for brands to reach out for deals with the company and put their products inside titles like EA Sports FC, Madden, NHL, Skate, or The Sims. EA revealed that its EA Sports side of the company brings in "hundreds of millions of players across console, PC, and mobile" every year. Fan engagement of these titles was also touted as being "extraordinary," with 23,000 NFL seasons worth of games being played in Madden NFL daily, while EA Sports FC sees over a billion matches a day. “Players come to EA’s games and live experiences every day to play, watch, create and connect,” said David Tinson, Chief Experiences Officer at Electronic Arts. “That gives brands a meaningful opportunity to show up in ways that add value and respect the player experience, while maintaining authenticity in the worlds our teams are building. With EA Advertising, we’re helping brands become part of those moments in ways that are relevant and built for players.” Using the new program EA Advertising, brands will be able to inject their products into games in real-time via dynamic placement. EA says partners will have access to everything from stadium signage in sports games and targeted adverts to in-game content custom-made for the brands. These are described as additions designed to "enhance, not disrupt" experiences. "In these interactive gameplay environments, brands become part of the game itself, reflecting how players engage with advertising in real-world contexts," adds the company "Brands can activate across live environments, tailoring placements to meet campaign objectives, and update campaigns with ongoing optimization informed by aggregated engagement insights." Current real-world brand partnerships EA has built into its games include Visa (EA Sports FC and College Football), Lowe's (EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, and College Football), Red Bull (EA SPORTS FC), Xfinity and Peacock (EA SPORTS FC), and Mountain Dew’s (College Football).

    • UK to ban under-16s from social media following a six-week trial with teenagers by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels A few months ago, Neowin reported that the UK was trialing a social media ban with 300 teenagers for six weeks, that testing has come to an end, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the country will ban under-16s from social media. Starmer said that this technology is making children unhappy and making it easier for bullies to harass and abuse them. He continued to talk about the addictive nature of social media, saying that it uses an infinite scroll designed to lock users in for hours. He said this interferes with children doing their homework, reading, playing with friends outside, and going to bed on time. Tackling the idea that nothing can be done about social media, Starmer said: The government’s action won’t stop at social media either, the PM said. It plans to take action on gaming services and livestreaming platforms. Right now, he said, strangers can contact any child unchecked. He said this wouldn’t happen in real life, and the government is going to stop it from happening online, too. The Labour government has overseen the introduction of the Online Safety Act, a big change to the internet which includes age verification on adult websites. This has led to a fair bit of backlash, but overall, the government is pushing ahead with these changes.
