InterceptorX
Looking to get a new router that can run DD-WRT. Would like it to be a GigaBit interface with a Wireless interface also. Would prefer N but G would be ok also. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/754502-router-suggestions/ Share on other sites

+BudMan MVC Posted April 2, 2009 MVC Share Posted April 2, 2009 Vs putting gig on your router you might be better off just getting a gig switch and plugging it into your router. For starters this gives you WAY MORE OPTIONS for your gig, plus the ability to get say a smart switch, one your sure supports jumboframes, etc. etc. Easy to find 8 ports vs the standard router 4, etc. Do you have N clients? There is no advantage of having a N router with no N clients, to take advantage of the N features (speed and range) you have to have a N client. If looking to run dd-wrt, I would suggest the standard that everyone loves WRT54GL Then find yourself a nice gig switch and your golden, if you have N clients then sur ethe wrt310N would work. InterceptorX
Ok, so the way i would set this up would be using 2 of these. So these would both sit behind my current router and that would give me the file sharing speeds I want to see in house? majortom1981
Both wrt600n and the wrt610n support dd-wrt . both have all have gigabit ports (even for wan port) and both do 2.4 a 5 bands at the same time. Also both have usb ports for external hdds and stuff. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/754502-router-suggestions/#findComment-590798388 Share on other sites

+BudMan MVC Posted April 2, 2009 MVC Share Posted April 2, 2009 I wouldnt go with 2 of those, get a 8 port and only loose 2 ports one on your switch and 1 on the routers switch. If use 2 of those your going to use 2 on the router and 1 each on the 4 port switches to connect everything together, or 1 on the router 1 on one switch and 2 on the other. Double check that the usb ports can be used for sharing to your network with dd-wrt, etc. You might better off getting a real nas, etc. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/754502-router-suggestions/#findComment-590799200 Share on other sites

Double check that the usb ports can be used for sharing to your network with dd-wrt, etc. You might better off getting a real nas, etc. Here is the setup: First i have my cable that hits the modem. Modem to router. Then i am going to go router to first switch. From there CAT cable to moms computer, dads computer, brothers computer, and one the another switch in my room. From my room it goes my computer, file sharing server, 360, PS3. +BudMan MVC Posted April 3, 2009 MVC Share Posted April 3, 2009 Like I said your going to loose ports. The switch in your room does not have enough room for your computer, file sharing server, 360, ps3 all at the same time. Put sure if you want to swap out the 360 and ps3 that will work. In that sort of setup then sure you would need gig at the router switch to use gig between people on the different switches. But unlikely that the routers switch supports jumbo frames. Not that thats a requirement, just letting you know. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/754502-router-suggestions/#findComment-590801062 Share on other sites
