Skype over iPhone 3G

Recommended Posts

It's possible if you have a jailbroken iPhone, you'll need to install the Voipover3g package in cydia, and edit a plist to allow skype to use 3G. I haven't tried it, but reports are saying that it's fairly unstable, so whether it's worth the effort is debatable.

Although make sure that your data contract allows voip applications - if it doesn't you could be breaching your contract terms and could find yourself with a hefty bill at the end of the month.

Be warned that ATT just re-did their Terms of Service to prohibit VOIP calls over their network.

From the Front page news

AT&T has altered its terms of service to kill off any type of high bandwidth applications. In a nutshell the new TOS will not allow you to use your Slingbox, Skype, or watch Hulu using AT&T's mobile data services.

AT&T states "downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, customer initiated redirection of television or other video or audio signals via any technology from a fixed location to a mobile device, web broadcasting, and... any applications that tether the device... to Personal Computers or other equipment."

We will all have to wait and see how AT&T goes about enforcing these new rules. They could use Verizon's method where users are capped at 5 gigabytes and anything over that can get your service terminated. As the internet becomes more bandwidth heavy it's the networks that are inhibiting progress and not the technology.

The thing with Skype is that it's popular.

Same goes for things like MSN - it's not the best network out there, and I'd rather get away with it, but I'm tied to whatever networks my friends use - for for voip, that's Skype, because it's the most mainstream and well known product.

    • My son is in Monaco right now, and I was checking his location in Apple's Find My app. I noticed that Prince Albert's Palace was blurred out on the satellite imagery in both Find My and Apple Maps. I checked Google Maps, and the palace wasn't blurred there. Does Apple have some kind of process where property owners can request that their homes be blurred on Apple Maps?
    • No, it was THAT ugly and I’d rather forget it completely existed.
    • There is a lot of reasons not to use Edge but faster fixes and security updates is not one of them.
    • Can't reproduce. I installed Edge, went to neowin.net > accepted the cookie consent > used menu to go to forums, everything loads and I can browse around the forums. If you can't interact with the dialog on the forums for some reason, go to the main site and accept the cookie consent there? It is true that the site will not function properly until the cookie consent is accepted or rejected,. it's a legal requirement and I also know that certain VPN/ad blockers block it, which is a user related issue and not a neowin.net problem.   This is not our cookie consent dialog. Gotta love browser hijacking... /s Edit: this may be what Californians see, I will confirm with our consent provider.
