Quick question do you game?

If so you might wanna check out these routers:

SMC Barricade 7004FW

Which I own, and

Linksys BEFSX41

Both put you behind NAT, and both of them also have a SPI firewall. In addition the SMC I have gives you quit abit of rules for port mapping, but the linksys is supposed to be better than the SMC one now.

I own variations of both of those and I was not pleased with the SMC. The main reason I bought it was cuz it has a print server on it, which is all I use it for now! :p

The Linksys is much easier to config and I have had little problems with gaming.

Does the BEFSX41 still have SPI? The lastest firmware update to my WiFi Linksys router removed the SPI capability cuz it was causing too many problems for users :(

I got the Netgear DG824M which has 4 10/100 ports and an integrated 802.11b Access Point. It has a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall and is plug and play out of the box - it was simply a matter of connect the ADSL line and a PC and switch it on. Using a browser to connect you setup your login, password and DNS and it's done.

It has lots of networking features as expected - port forwarding, static routes etc - so it should handle just about anything you want it to do.

The only downside was buggy firmware for example it didn't keep the time - always started from 01-01-2000 00:00 and wouldn't sync to an NTP server and it would loose static routes and IP reservations when rebooted.

A call to Netgear support got me a 1.2 Release 07 update (which must be a beta as it isn't on www.netgear.com yet) which fixed the problems and added Universal Plug and Play functionality to boot.

Once the firmware is updated I would recommend it if you want wireless too - otherwise the DG824 without wireless should be as good...hope that helps.

Lol your SMC story is the exact opposite of mine. Before the 2.11 firmware(one on thier site now) I had hard locks where I'd have to reboot the router, and had problems with games behind Nat because of thier lack of trigger port rules(So there wasn't enough rules to add all my games so I had to DMZ my comp).

After upating to the 2.11 this router has served me perfectly, although I was disappointed they dropped the Dyndns sync function and only support TZO which isn't free, but thats a different story.

About the linksys though I have no idea if they took out the SPI firewall. That would indeed be a shame but probably not the worst thing in the world, since the firewalls on these routers aren't the best anyways.

it has NO ethernet port at all?!?!

No, in order for me to use ethernet with my nic card, i will have to buy "another" adsl modem, this one was supplied by my isp for ?50 ( 79.5627 USD ) Which IMHO is quite expensive, i don't really wanna have to go out and buy another one...;))

an Alcatel SpeedTouch Home is a quite good ADSL modem imo, and it costs 100 bucks here.

you can hack it to become Alcatel Speedtouch Pro which is a router and a firewall as well.

after you hacked it to become Pro, you can hack it further to become SpeedTouch 510, which also includes uPnP and some other stuff.

i love this modem! i dunno how good it is as a router tho.
