Cost of web design

Question

I've designed a couple websites for some friends in exchange for favors but now one of them showed it to someone that wants a website for his business. He wants me to do it for him, but I have no idea how much to charge for something like this. Is it hourly based or what? I'm not sure yet how complicated he wants it but he has seen my other sites.

Anyways, any ideas?

I was paid $12/hour for the first site I re-designed. I recently designed a site from scratch for $15/hour (this included design and webmaster duties) and this summer I'm doing more web development for $600/week (minimum $15/hour).

Hope that helps.

I'd say if all you are doing is designing the site, you can charge a flat fee, but if the job includes any maintenance duties, I'd suggest you charge him by the hour.

Thanks for all the responses. I will be designing the site and being the webmaster so I'll probably go with the hourly thing. I still have to meet with the guy to see what he expects. I do some graphic arts, some flash and html so it won't be a "bleeding edge" site. I think the guy just wants some basics and maintanance anyways.

Well, only one site is still up and remember it was done as a favor to him. Also, some of the things that were added later like the storefront he never got to match the whole "theme"

Please be gentle :D

Well my personal opinion is that every man, woman and their dog calls themselfs web designers, it seems to be a stupidly saturated job right now (I refuse to call it a profession). What ever you charge, someone could be found to charge less with little effort :s

Tough call imo.

Granted, but cost is not the only factor. Are you going to save a few bucks and hire some guy half way across the country or spend a few bucks to hire someone you can actually meet with in person to work out design details and such?

Indeed, that makesa lot of difference.

I was just having a mini rant. I get really annoyed at people who claim to be IT experts, but just use Frontpage / VB. Its not something I've got a huge amount of respect for.

Yeah, I think that's really the only reason he would go with me anyways. Just someone that a friend knows so he knows I'm there and won't screw him. He came looking for me, not the other way around. And if I can make some extra bucks from it....

I dont envy your position tbh, I hate asking people for money, especially if I'm unsure of the worth :s

I can understand your gripe, but from what I read, no one here was claiming to be some expert IT god.

There are plenty of people out there who are willing to pay someone to make a simple website.

What's wrong with that?

The way I do it is, I come up with a general figure in my head based on what I think the user is looking for.

For instance.

Minimum: $1200

Includes: 20 Pages, 4 pictures per page, 2 Paragraphs per page, Preliminary meetings, image scanning, photo manipulation, Design/Concept, Work, Posting of the site, Conclusion meeting (to present and iron out problems).

Anything above that, I charge $30 per hour.

That way, you can build him an average site for $1200, but if he wants bigger and better, and also any administration later on, you have a set price and he/she knows what to expect for bigger and better.

The key is to stick to your guns. If he calls you up and says, "Hey, can you change the color of the text on page 14 really quick" make sure you charge him for 1 full hours worth of work. That will avoid the "I dont like italics on page 235, can you change it?" type of complaints everyday. He will consolidate them into 10 problem packages and pay you for 1 hour, rather than 10.

Do you have a web site so that we could check out your site and look at your porfolio?

That would be great if you did.
