Widdowmaker
also, whenever i look at any program in the add/remove window it always says Atlantik Designer cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type. Amarok cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). redvamp128
I think I know why based on what is on this page-- it may be time to update your version- http://packages.medibuntu.org/ Mediabuntu # 2008-10-19 Removed feisty. and Packages the Ubuntu update site news says 2009-02-21 Remove feisty. http://packages.ubuntu.com/ Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/760426-help-cant-install-any-repositories-or-programs/#findComment-590865634 Share on other sites
Widdowmaker
ok. umm. how do i do that? do i need to uninstall ubuntu? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/760426-help-cant-install-any-repositories-or-programs/#findComment-590865646 Share on other sites
redvamp128
You could try this page= http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/upgra...eisty-to-gutsy/ Then once you are in gutsy- you could get all the updates for gutsy and then upgrade again to Hardy though that one I believe the command is update-manager -d and that will bring more in line with the supported line of releases. and yes you do have to go from Feisty to Gutsy and then to Hardy. No Cutting inbetween unless you download the Hardy burn the Cd and install over your Feisty. Widdowmaker
would it be better to do that or to just download burn and then do a "clean" install? redvamp128
I would unless there are things on the install you just do not want to loose. Widdowmaker
went to the site, followed the directions, ran gksu "update-manager -c " and it opened a window, tried to download 68 files, got the 404 error. it said 7.10 update is avalible on a button, i click it, it tries to download 2 files, does NOT give an error, and then it just sits there. thank you for being helpful, i dont mean to sound ungratful or incompetent. ive just been messing with this for days now, went to linux because windows crashed and burned, gave me a bad bios checksum error. nah. this install is all of a day old. id do a clean install, but i dont know how to setup a torrent to download an iso of the newer version, how to burn it to a disc in linux, how to install the program i NEED to burn it to a disc, where to GET the program to burn it to a disc, and if i knew how and where then there is a good chance it wont LET me because im on feisty. redvamp128
http://repository.debuntu.org/ You could maybe change your sources list to add these for fiesty-- and possibly they still may have them up... to be able to burn a cd. Widdowmaker
i cant burn a cd though, its a catch 22 to burn i need to install, to install i need to be off feisty, to be off feisty i need to burn. and the instructions on that site arent working either. You can download 8.1 Ubuntu without bothing to deal with torrents by going here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download If you don't have K3B or something to that effect then you can burn an ISO from the command line: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/li...y/l-cdburn.html Or you can download the image from the above site to a Windows/Mac computer and burn the CD from that computer. Widdowmaker
an iso from command line is way beyond my technical skill level, just by looking at it. i can copy and paste commands, but i cant comprehend anything its telling me on that tutorial. i dont have k3b and dont know names of other possible burning programs. im downloading the iso now, but its going to take all night. burning a cd on a diff pc is not a option for me. wish it was. hjf288
I should think you have dpkg? If so you can download a .deb of a CD burning package and use dpkg --instal meme.deb or you could download the source and compile it.. Providing you have the dependencys it shouldnt be too much trouble to do :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/760426-help-cant-install-any-repositories-or-programs/#findComment-590865750 Share on other sites

redvamp128
I think feisty default install came with gnomebaker http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty/CDDVDBurning So I think the burning part is already there and that guide shows nothing that needs to download from the web to burn. I think I ran feisty for a few weeks then Dapper came out and I updated ... then went all windows for a while and now back for Hardy (also ran Intrepid) waiting on Jaunty to finish beta before I install it. redvamp128
You may also want to goto the main Ubuntu site and request free medium-- It can take up to 6 weeks to get a free cd but the last one I requested only took 4 and it was free. hjf288
dpkg is a console tool :) Sometimes you gotta get down and dirty: Its on Debian Lenny (Upgraded from Edge using Aptitude) but since Ubuntu is based on Debian it should apply :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/760426-help-cant-install-any-repositories-or-programs/#findComment-590866016 Share on other sites

redvamp128
Actually why not try the alternate install cd-- where it will download the packages it needs only... and is small http://releases.ubuntu.com/intrepid/ Just make sure that after you run this the internet is connected... it will download the latest packages... http://releases.ubuntu.com/intrepid/ubuntu...ernate-i386.iso It is much smaller than the normal cd. Will boot to a prompt to install- Type CLI Which means Command Line Install. and if you should have issues connecting - reboot with cd and type sudo ifup eth0 (or eth1) and it should connect. then type ifconfig if it has an Ip address then type your CLI This method does take a little longer but it does install the latest packages and downloads the packages in bursts. As far as a good site-- I would say https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal And above there is a link to the community online documentation. Elv13
Just order some free CD from canonical. Trying to upgrade 7.04 will brake it. It will not survive 4 dist-upgrade one after the other, just no way.
