Recommended Posts

also, whenever i look at any program in the add/remove window it always says

Atlantik Designer cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type.

Amarok cannot be installed on your computer type (i386). Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type.

ect ect

I think I know why based on what is on this page-- it may be time to update your version-

Remove feisty.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/

You could try this page=

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/upgra...eisty-to-gutsy/

Then once you are in gutsy- you could get all the updates for gutsy and then upgrade again to Hardy though that one I believe the command is

update-manager -d

and that will bring more in line with the supported line of releases.

and yes you do have to go from Feisty to Gutsy and then to Hardy. No Cutting inbetween unless you download the Hardy burn the Cd and install over your Feisty.

went to the site, followed the directions, ran

gksu "update-manager -c "

and it opened a window, tried to download 68 files, got the 404 error. it said 7.10 update is avalible on a button, i click it, it tries to download 2 files, does NOT give an error, and then it just sits there.

thank you for being helpful, i dont mean to sound ungratful or incompetent. ive just been messing with this for days now, went to linux because windows crashed and burned, gave me a bad bios checksum error.

nah. this install is all of a day old. id do a clean install, but i dont know how to setup a torrent to download an iso of the newer version, how to burn it to a disc in linux, how to install the program i NEED to burn it to a disc, where to GET the program to burn it to a disc, and if i knew how and where then there is a good chance it wont LET me because im on feisty.

You can download 8.1 Ubuntu without bothing to deal with torrents by going here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

If you don't have K3B or something to that effect then you can burn an ISO from the command line:

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/li...y/l-cdburn.html

Or you can download the image from the above site to a Windows/Mac computer and burn the CD from that computer.

an iso from command line is way beyond my technical skill level, just by looking at it.

i can copy and paste commands, but i cant comprehend anything its telling me on that tutorial. i dont have k3b and dont know names of other possible burning programs.

im downloading the iso now, but its going to take all night.

burning a cd on a diff pc is not a option for me. wish it was.

I should think you have dpkg? If so you can download a .deb of a CD burning package and use dpkg --instal meme.deb or you could download the source and compile it..

Providing you have the dependencys it shouldnt be too much trouble to do :)

not sure what dpkg is, but its not in the "start bar" or whatever you call the lil ubuntu icon in the top left. and i cant install anything at all. vanilla feisty fawn

I think feisty default install came with gnomebaker

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty/CDDVDBurning

So I think the burning part is already there and that guide shows nothing that needs to download from the web to burn.

I think I ran feisty for a few weeks then Dapper came out and I updated ... then went all windows for a while and now back for Hardy (also ran Intrepid) waiting on Jaunty to finish beta before I install it.

if it came with gnomebreaker then howcome it dont show in the start menu?

hopefully it burns easily enough. according to that site all i gotta do for an iso is rightclick>burn to cd - like its really gonna be that simple - got the image downloading right now eta 6hrs. its going at 25k a sec, wish it would speed up.

ty for the help redvamp. ive got the download going and found the cd burner in feisty. its one menu over under places. lol

when its done ill just burn and switch, ill be back if i have the same problem on 8.10 (whats its name?) ty ty ty

if neowin had a rep system youd get major +

Actually why not try the alternate install cd-- where it will download the packages it needs only... and is small

http://releases.ubuntu.com/intrepid/

Just make sure that after you run this the internet is connected... it will download the latest packages...

http://releases.ubuntu.com/intrepid/ubuntu...ernate-i386.iso

It is much smaller than the normal cd.

Will boot to a prompt to install-

Type

CLI

Which means Command Line Install.

and if you should have issues connecting -

reboot with cd and type

sudo ifup eth0 (or eth1) and it should connect.

then type

ifconfig

if it has an Ip address then type your

CLI

This method does take a little longer but it does install the latest packages and downloads the packages in bursts.

As far as a good site-- I would say https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

And above there is a link to the community online documentation.

    • I used to use Google assistant, not on the phone i have now, but about 7 years ago, then I decided it did not really do anything for me. Because i had Echo units over the house I added Alexa to the phone to control stuff and that is how it is now. Not the new Alexa+, as that is not really available in the U.K yet apart from on new units and to be honest, not interested in it. I went though the stage years ago of using voice to do text and call people, quicker to do it using my hands. I had a muck about with Siri on my Mac when I first got it, but not having a microphone permanently plugged in makes it a pain. I know it can be used by text. Siri like Apple AI is disabled on my Mac and will stay disabled.
    • I have a TV, but it is not used for normal linear TV, only streaming and it is not a Samsung and the best bit is, I don;'t and never have had a Instagram account. The only thing I have to do with Meta is Faceache and I only keep that just for the messaging part.
    • But building your own.. what? You can't build anything like the Steam Machine yourself. Even trying to get close costs a good deal more. Even just the CPU cooler in their price comparison is as big as the entire Steam Machine. If you want a regular gaming PC, then by all means, build that. If you want a a small console-like PC for the living room that is good for gaming, I'm not sure what else is a better deal. In the GN review, they only mentioned a small form factor Dell, which is like twice the size and hundreds of dollars more expensive.
    • Those are some popular multiplayer games. But hardly "all". Just those that don't work on Linux currently due to specific anti-cheat implementations. I think it's also fair to point out the literally thousands of games that don't work on the PS5. And it's not locked at 1080p. That's the default, which you can change.
