Ubuntu 9.04 and PS3

Recommended Posts

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 (build 200409) post-RC.

I am having trouble with audio on the PS3. It can find the audio device and everything seems to be ok except I cannot hear anything.

I have gone into Sound preferences and everything is on Auto Detect and when i press Test it says its testing but no sound. \

Any help greatly appreciated :)

Launch a terminal and type in "amixer".

See if any of the bars have MM below them (MM means muted). If so, select the bar and click the M key on your keyboard to unmute it.

EDIT: Ugh, only noticed now that you're using PulseAudio. Not sure of how much help this tip can be, since amixer is alsamixer. :/

That's what I downloaded. The full 9.04 release for PlayStation 3. It actually runs pretty well. I also enabled the ps3vram to swap space and it can run multiple applications much better now.

Anyway, Ubuntu is using PulseAudio, and neither ALSA, OSS or pulse work.

OSS keeps displayin an error while testing audio, ALSA plays the test with no sound and PulseAudio plays the test with no sound.

Its really annoying me. cant make Linux a media server with no sound :(

openSUSE 11.1 and YDL 6.1 worked fine with sound (with a little playing around) but this is just getting on my nerves.

Thanks for all the feedback people. I managed to fix the problem (sort of).

I think its a bug with HDMI autodetecting and ALSA. I plugged in my composite cords and connected the white and red cord to my stereo system. Now, sound works via composite and video works via HDMI.

Although sound still does not work via HDMI I am able to run sound atleast through my stereo.

On a side note, anyone looking to install any Linux distro on their PS3 and own a 768p HDTV, try the following for installation at KBoot:

install video=ps3fb:mode:155 -c

This will give Linux the screen resolution of 768p at Full RGB.

Thanks again for the help peeps :)

Wow.

You put more effort into this than I would have. I would have given up, but glad that perseverance paid off for you. And thanks for posting your solution here, so others could find. (Y)

    • You can use MCT to create an updated ISO and then use Rufus to create the bootable USB.
    • low latency mode is still bugged and causing bootup times slow to a crawl. To fix, you have to disable the feature with vivetool. Seems as though it's not rolled out to a lot of people yet since I've only been able to find only a handful of people that are having issues.
    • I would recommend the Nothing 2a. The battery life is awesome, 2 or 3 days without going into battery power mode. The only thing that I've been looking into recently is that it doesn't "support" Graphene OS. I'm pretty sure there is a way, I just need to do some more looking.
    • You'd have to show me an example of a listing that says Gen 1, usually i'd expect that to mean Snapdragon Gen 1 (a type of chipset, which the Pixels don't use). Pixel 7 - White - 128gb - Unlocked - 85%+ battery - Grade B+ - $159 with free delivery - https://www.ebay.com/itm/398046617206 Pixel 7 - Obsidian - 128gb - Unlocked - 80%+ battery - Very Good - $157 with free delivery - https://www.ebay.com/itm/355617734563 Both look to be sold by companies with good feedback, dealing with refurbished phones and state the phones are unlocked with a clean IMEI. Obviously I can't vouch for either company though, but the listings look good in my opinion.
    • Because Chrome is doing it. And no one said anyone had to update immediately. That's silly. They could update every day for all I care as long as it's fast, and the next time the browser restarts, you're good. And the basic point is not to tee it up for bigger updates. As it is right now, all the windows I had open reopen anyway except inprivate.
