linux or windows

Recommended Posts

...And after 10000000 times, it's still just as much of a stupid question. There's a difference between BEING better, and what you THINK is better. I think Linux is the best thing since sliced bread, because it's perfect for what I want to use it for. Other people who I know, don't think Linux is as good as sliced bread. Even if Linux is better, how can you really tell until you've tried them both for yourself? And if after you've tried Mandrake or Redhat, you decide that Windows is better, try using a more powerful distribution like Slackware or Debian.

i think linux is better, it is free (or very inexpensive compared to the rip offs that are microsoft products), alot of the software you might want is free (open office comes with major distributions and can do all the things that microsoft office cna do - for free) although you may have to pay for something, alot of the time you will get frienly user - user support for any application you purchase, using the latest wine technologies alot of games can be used on linux with a bit of patient setting up, although, if you are not in love with the command line (i myself have grown to adore it) then you may find it hard to use at first, until you begin understanding the command line and basic commands

i found the legal hacking problems at hackerslab.org taught me alot about unix and the command line, you might want to give it a try, it teaches you alot about pipes, buffer overflows, basic and more advanced unix commands etc

Its not a case of being better or worse , but different. Linux is different , it does some things very well and somethings not so well and some bloody aweful. And Windows is the same.

Try Linux , try as a dual boot then you can really compare.

It maybe love at first sight or instant divorce.

But one thing for sure Linux isn't for everone but I have found it fun to use and mess with.

Well as you can see asking this in the linux forum gave a lot of pro linux replies. and here one more :D Linux is better, technically speaking it is a superior operating system, but in today world that doesn't mean jack (look at beos, it's gone and the mac's still here). You also have to have apps. Unless you specialize in something like say music (and need to use finale 2000 on a regular basis) linux can suit your needs. You can get pretty much anything for free is you have a decent net connection. You can even play games which have better frame rates in linux versions (at least with nvidia cards). My advice get the newest linux distro of your choice, i recommend mandrake or SuSE (redhat has less configuration utilities) and dual boot. Linux only needs about 1 gig (if that) and some swap space and it'll be fine. I was dual-booting for maybe a year till I got proficient with linux (and new games that worked in linux natively came along :D) and you should probably do the same.

Say what ?

I wouldnt agree with that, I've been using Redhat since forever, from the early versions, although I've been really using Xwindows only for the last three years, I can say that Redhat has come a long way, and there are a lot of apps and config utils you can install for it, and if you a noob in Linux, there are lots of apps in rpm format and they are easy to install. I would also recomend Debian, you got to love that apget :D

since you've been using redhat forever you should know what i'm talking about. i used to use redhat and ditched it because it wasn't as easily configured as mandrake or suse. i'm not saying it's bad but realisticallly it's not newbie ready. you don't see anyone here recommending slack or gentoo even though they are both excellent distros. I'm also surprised that anyone would recommend debian for a new linux user, the installation isn't any freindly than it used to be, and that's half the battle.

I would recommend Debian as well. Have a look at Miniwoody. It offers Debian Woody plus KDE 3.1.1a and fits on a small 180MB CD.

SuSE, Mandrake, RedHat, ... all the big distros are much too bloated with crap one will never need. They patch their kernels to the max in order to be everybody's darling. They're offering "easy-to-use" configuration tools (for example YAST in SuSE) to bind newbies to their distros (there are soo many linux users out there who think that yast is a part of linux itself :( ).

I've been using SuSE for several years (since 6.0) and didn't learn anything from it. There was YAST that did the real work for me and IF I tried to edit some configfiles myself I either didn't find them since SuSE put them somewhere else or editing didn't work out because YAST threw the changes away. Since using debian (for about two months) I really know what's going on on my system and know how to alter it the way a want.

So I strongly advice people to get a real linux distro to begin with.

what happens when they can't even install the "real" distro. You may not have learned anything from SuSE (can't say I have either) but wheether you admit it or not. It's perfect for a newbie. Most people probably don't give a rat's patootie about learning an OS. They just want it to work.

In any case if I were recommending a "real" distro it would be gentoo, because there you will definitely learn and the installation is much less convoluted than debian's. Not that debian isn't great, it's just not for most newbies.

As for Mandrake that's what I currently use and it's anything but bloated, kde is faster than even on gentoo (still don't know how thay pulled that one off) and they're config tools do allow you to mess around with stuff manually. Plus you can always have extra/new software immediately after it is release, so eye candyhoics (like myself) don't have to wait very long (maybe a day) for it to be made availableas an rpm (and urpmi rocks!).

Well I think this is turning into a flame-war/distro-war so I'm gonna quit now (unless you want to continue discussion as pm).

btw there are newbie centric debian based distros which I would recommend like lycoris, xandros, libranet to name a few, but AFAIK these aren't freely downloadable.

I just began using Linux not to long ago. I have a dual boot going (Windows XP Home edition/SuSE 8.2 Professional). I think Linux is more challenging, but alot more fun to learn, and use. For gaming, Windows can't be beat. Hopefully not for long (come on developers). But for surfing the internet checking e-mail, video editing, security. office work, research, and learning about computer programming Linux can't be beat. Hopefully in the future, Linux distros will be able to rival Mac OSX, for ease of use and looks (GUI), but as a whole Linux is just as powerful as Mac OSX, and doesn't require a whole new set of hardware to run. Give it a try!. If Linux is good enough for Hollywood, major coorperations, and NASA, than it has to be good as a whole. Not like Steve Ballmer' s (MS) stupid and ignorant remark (A hobbyists operating system). :D

Linux needs work. Perhaps a new distro, something like : NOOBEOS would help. One that makes software installation a snap, works well with windows partitions, comes pre-configured with wine, or winex (work out a deal with transgamers) has an extensive driver support databank, and prevents the normal user from screwing it up, like LINUX FILE PROTECTION or something like that, supports fast user switching, is totally customizable, and so on.

Then it will rival windows, and can take it on in a more direct approach. Users, as in the non-computerfile crowd would be more apt in trying Linux, and that is how you gain support. Even now it is a headache just to get MP3 support, play a DVD, or rip and burn a CD. I mean it should be as simple in Linux as it is in windows. CLick click click, you're done.

But alas it is not that simple just yet.. but I predict, it will be in a couple of years. Some of you may use Linux as a desktop client. I do. But we are the few. Most use Linux for a specific purpose, router/firewall, networking, server etc...

To gain widespread usage Linux is going to have to dumbdown to the regular joe blow. When that happens, Bill Gates will **** his pants! hehehe

    • Microsoft: Edge performs better than Google Chrome on Windows in ad blocking and more by Sayan Sen Recently, Google put out a performance report for its Chrome web browser explaining how the changes it made to memory management and caching mechanisms managed to make it the fastest it has ever been. Google is not the only one to do it recently, as Microsoft too made similar claims about performance boosts earlier in the year in April. If you were trying to pick between the two, Microsoft is trying to make it easy for you to decide. In a recent blog post titled "Microsoft Edge browser: The fast, smart alternative to Chrome," the tech giant has laid out all the reasons you should pick its browser over Google Chrome. As pointed out in our first paragraph, performance is something these companies often try to brag about, and for good reasons, because people do want to get a snappier experience. This could explain why Mozilla's Firefox has been left behind over time in terms of market share, as it has not been able to keep up with Chromium-based browsers in the performance department. Microsoft says that Edge is better for your Windows PC than Google's Chrome, as it is a "Microsoft product" that "integrates closely with Microsoft Windows," which helps with "performance benefits." Besides that, the Redmond company also points out other "speed and efficiency" features of Edge, like sleeping tabs that helped save 'over 7 trillion megabytes of memory' in 2024. And Edge is also said to "help with smooth performance so that add-ons like Microsoft Translator, ad blockers, and password managers work efficiently." Microsoft adds how the "optimized architecture of Edge helps with lower CPU load and overall resource consumption, providing a smooth experience, particularly on low-spec devices" and also how its "efficient resource allocation helps minimize slowdowns." Aside from performance, productivity is another area where Microsoft says Edge excels. That is thanks to Microsoft 365 integration and other AI tools. In the end of the blog post, Microsoft suggests that this is the right time to switch to Edge from Google Chrome. You can find the post here on Microsoft's official website.
    • At some point, hardware becomes obsolete and we cant blame vendors for dropping support. Much of the models dropped, run Intel hardware which means they can install something else on the device if they truly want to keep using it.

    • Because Apple has never discontinued Mac models before now?
    • I recall reading that they intend to synchronize the version numbers between iOS, tvOS and macOS, so we will also be getting macOS 26 up next.
