Replacing Xubuntu with Ubuntu

Recommended Posts

The first time I installed Xubuntu I ended up wiping my XP , The second time was smoother but now I want to try Ubuntu ... I downloaded and burned the image, booted from a CD and arrived at the parition manager ... The Manager recognizes Three partitions , One for Windows , One for Xubuntu and one is without an OS but I use it to store all my data ... So basically I have three partitions C:\ , D:\ and U:\ Where U is the partition I have Xubuntu installe on ....

I want to try Ubuntu and at the same time I want to remove Xubuntu so I'm planning on installing Ubuntu on U:\ now what I want to know is will this remove Xubuntu and replace it with Ubuntu ?? And what should I do to make sure it is done properly ?? In the partition manager There is an option that says "Install them side by side" regarding OSes ..I do want to install Ubuntu side by side with Windows but I want it to replace Xubuntu , Now is this the option I should be choosing then ??

Wouldn't the quickest way just to boot Xubuntu and do a "sudo apt-get remove xubuntu-desktop " and "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop gdm"

Maybe , Not really comfortable or familliar with that sudo apt stuff ... I have the image already burned and I just want to wipe Xubuntu entirely

Xubuntu and Ubuntu are the same operating system, it makes no sense erasing it and installing the same one again,

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

will install gnome desktop (for that is the only difference between the two) which you will be able to choose on login. If you are worried about space, feel free to remove the xfce.

If you want to get rid of Xubuntu, and install Ubuntu...

That's only for Jaunty, though. Follow the link if you need to get rid of an older version of Xubuntu.

What I would do.....run the Ubuntu LiveCD and run the install. When you get to the partition part of the install do a manual and be sure to use your U partition and format it. Finish the install. Ubuntu will replace Xubuntu and Grub will find Windows and you can still run both.

I have to say that this is the most sound advice here.

Ubuntu and Xubuntu aren't different Operating Systems. Both are the same Linux, but with a different desktop default.

I agree with Mark. Don't reinstall Linux or remove XFCE (the Xubuntu environment) for the sake of trying Gnome (the Ubuntu environment). They are ordinary software packages and you can have them installed side-by-side. Run the terminal command given by Zapadlo. Once that is done, logout so you get back to the login screen when you're booting your system. At the bottom, click Options, then Select Session, then choose Gnome. To get back to using XFCE, just go through the login screen stuff again and choose XFCE.

Maybe he just wants to reinstall. :)

Well that is exactly what I want to do ... I want a clean fresh install , I know they are the same OS with different Desktop environment like Kubuntu and Edubuntu or whatever its called but I just want to remove everything and have a clean fresh install , as simple as that because I was experimenting the last time with Xubuntu so now I want to clean whatever I messed up and place a clean install ... I will give this a shot though , Atm I'm updating the packages in Xubuntu , For some reason I found out I'm using 8.04 instead of 8.10 so I'm downloading all the updates

In that case, what Growled has said really. Easiest way is to boot LiveCD and handle partitions when installing Ubuntu. By the way latest release is 9.04. I would advise getting that so you don't have to upgrade newly installed 8.10.

Yeah yeah I know , But I"m pointing out that my Xubuntu isn't even the last version , Its 2 versions old so that's why I want to wipe it out all together
