Three improvements you'd like to make to the PS3?

Recommended Posts

I love my PS3. Love it. However, there are some things about it that make me grrrrrrrrrr.

Here's my top three wishes for PS3.

  1. Better messaging system - unless I'm currently looking at the screen on receipt of a message or remember to check my "Received" folder, I rarely realise I've got a message. I'd like something a bit more "in your face" to notify me there are unread messages.
  2. An "Update All" option for games - I'd like to see a facility to check for updates to all installed games. Obviously, games which don't install anything might not work but I'm sure there'd be a way around this. Nothing more annoying than fancying a quick game of something to then get an update which takes 20 mins
  3. More information on Playstation Store about games - I'd like to see more features listed, screenshots and demo's.

Excellent thread Wasted, hopefully this can be done in mature fashion without the regular people jumping in accusing people of being 360 fanboys and having to chew heads off every time you make a negative claim about the PS3.

My Top 3 points would be something like;

1. Improve the social interaction through XMB and Games. I want to be able to start a voice chat with someone while playing, I want to be able to receive proper invites without having to be in the game or accessing some menu to see whether I received an invite or not. I'd love to see some proper integration.

2. This may not be an improvement to the PS3 per say but the entire network. Start bundling the Official PS3 Headset with consoles. This is again a 'social' issue. Barely anyone is talking on the Playstation 3, I can almost count the number of people actually speaking with one hand, while I had my Killzone 2 spree last week. Plus, almost everyone is using some seriously cheap Bluetooth headset that has HORRIBLE sound. Bundle a cheap Logitech USB headset or some USB homebrew headset, I don't care - We need more people talking. I actually mute more 'noisy' players with crappy microphones on the PS3 than I do immature kids and ******s on the 360.

3. Hire some professionals to re-design the controller, it's about time. The base of the design is almost 15 years old now. Cheap plastic addons that actually improve the controller tenfold doesn't exactly speak to its great design. They actually managed to make it worse?

Those are my current main gripes with the PS3, everything on the PS3 is really starting to come together, it's my favourite media 'extender' and they are really upping themselves when it comes to great titles, software and future ideas.

better themes, the ps3 is meant to be powerful, so why cant there be animated icons, or even animated backgrounds, like a puppy that follows you when you scroll through menus etc! more colours too, and an option to change the theme colour each time on start up! - visually, my 360 does a better job, its colourful and bright, not grey/black and white!

a better way to browse through your files on a network pc/laptop!

force ALL downloads to work in the background! like some you have to wait till its finished!

maybe an option to download updates in the background but play the game anyway! for those who just want a quick play!

Yes, agreed on this, I missed a message from a friend for 3 days due to lack of real presence.

Both excellent points. The official head set is so nice it really should be a standard, and the lack of chatter is glaring in some games. And the current state of XMB/Friends communication is still lacking, more better soon.

3. Better firmware functionality: incremental updates & background music during games.

I knew this would be on your list

Controller is fine.

For PS3:

1. Auto-sync trophies.

2. Let us play the PSP games that you download on the PS3. (Not sure if that is possible)

For PSP:

1. Trophies for PSP games :D

2. Your friend list on PSP too.

3. Second analog stick

Some downloaded PSP games can be played on PS3.

1. Auto-install of games downloaded from PSN

Forgot about that one, it's something I never really understood. What's the point of having it inside that stupid bubble? Just install the damn thing after it downloads, it's not like it has any other use otherwise.

I don't care about online functionality at all, except for DLC and patches (which shouldn't ever be necessary, because a console game should be 100% perfect when it ships), so I only really have two desires:

1. Make it smaller. A lot smaller.

2. Use a SSD instead of a HDD. Of course, that would jack the price way up, so maybe better left for the PS4.

1. Infrared Receiver so us Universal Remote junkies can control the Bluray player!

2. PS2 game Playback on all PS3's regardless if they have the Hardware or not

3. Cheaper Games. When I buy PC games they are like ?17.99 the same exact game on PS3 is like ?39.99 or ?44.99 What is with that? - Fix it Sony cause its broken.

I'd like to see the following:

1. Persistant voice chat so I can start a chat with one or more people and have it continue whether I'm in game, XMB or watching a video. It might finally be the push I need to buy a headset then!

2. Full support for inviting people to any game/server.

3. Bring back PS2 backwards compatibility, even if its just software emulation that only works for select games on the store. I want to play Resident Evil 4 and MGS3 again. :p

  1. A Better Way To Play With Friends - Steal it from MS, do whatever needs to be done, but only one game has really made this a semi easy thing to do so far, and that is Resistance 2. I honestly would play my PS3 so much more if this was an easier thing to do.
  2. Official Headset Bundled With The Console - Me and Sethos are in absolute agreement here. While I think it is completely admirable to allow people to use whatever headset they want, it was just a mistake to do so. The quality of the mics most people use usually range from poor to atrocious, and it makes playing online hard to deal with when all you hear is echos and feedback.
  3. Make Every PSN Game Have a Trial or Demo Mode - I love the PSN games I own, and I probably would own some more if I just had the option to try before I buy.

That is really it from me as far as must-haves.

Other than that I really believe this is the year that will prove why owning a PS3 is indeed worth it, and honestly it probably gets more overall use than my 360 as it really is a great piece of hardware for streaming from my PC thanks to PS3 Media Server.

1) Better controller

The controller they designed for the PS1 was not the pinnacle of ergonomics.

2) More connected experience

From friends list, messaging to game invites. Port home features over to the XMB.

3) Update store.

I honestly dont know where to go find game content. Layout the content better and get rid of the icon view.

1. Better online gaming experience

I don't know what Xbox Live is, but apparently it's better than what there is on the PS3. And I must admit I don't really like the way we play online on the PS3. So why not make it better?

2. Better PS Store

Now, this one's already awesome, but I'd like the possibility to preview songs for Rock Band and Guitar hero in the PS Store, and the possibility to see a small video of absolutely any game to see briefly what it looks like (a trailer of the game, kinda)

3. The ability to play all sorts of music files and video files

MP3s don't even work here since 2.60 I think, don't get me wrong, this is one of the first things a "multimedia" console should do. And it should play Xvid content as well, m4v, etc. etc.

1. Demos of everything (live XBL)

2. Auto install of everything you download (like XBL)

3. Umm...controller wise, Just make L2 and R2 curved so your fingers don't slip out.. and swap the left thumbstick and DPAD around :D.. awesome THANKS SONY FOR LISTENING TO ME!

1. better (bigger) controller. about the size of the xbox 360 as i have large adult hands.

2. let me install my games. this is THE item that made me switch back to my 360 as my primary console. no drive spinning really quites it down.

3. internet access that doesn't go through sony and cause it to c r a w l to an almost unusable state.

i'm an old gamer and loved my ps3 over my 360 until the 360 updated the interface and allowed me to install games. i now rarely turn on my ps3 unless it's an exclusive and i can't get it on my 360.

4. fix the poorly implemented trophies and make it MORE like the gamerscore on the 360.

    • On xiaomi hyperos there's also an option to disable google assistant. I've got everything disabled. Only thing I do have installed is a web wrapped for duck.ai which claims to let you use various AIs anonymously
    • I need to understand the rationale of not shipping all of these K2 improvements in a single update/release. It's giving "we will fix Windows 11 but no commitments". It seems to me that they just announce these improvements just to appease the community.
    • The term "RTM" is long gone starting with Windows 10. Every current release is a GA build. This is the result of MS making Windows as a Service (WaaS).
    • Looks like no official TBW rating, which should be a required listing in my opinion for sites like Amazon (hell, put it on the box too.)
