Palm Pre Screen Problems

Recommended Posts

Being reported now at www.everythingpre.com by numerous people that a yellowish blemmish appears in the lower corners of the screen. Probablly related to overheating issue. Not all Pre owners are reporting this but a large number. Really sad to see this. I got to BestBuy to late yesterday and they had sold out. People taking their Pre's back for replacements will be waiting along time as this sounds like a hardware issue. Hmmm! The Xbox360 red ring of death ring a bell. This is upsetting.

"I have a similar problem: the bottom right corner is yellow. I'm going to take it back later today to have them look"

" Yes I have that SAME exact deal. Bottom left screen, kind of discoloration! I dunno whats up with that, the phone is brand new. I can only see it when viewing at an angle. "

" I'm having the same problem, but only when I'm not looking straight at it. The discoloration comes and goes, though. Maybe it is a heat issue. "

" It just might be! I let my phone sit with the screen off for about 15 minutes and went to send a text.....discoloration is gone. Wonder if it'll come back. "

" Lame. I didn't even notice it until I looked at this forum. I've got the yellow spot. My phone is on the charger now, but it's very apparent when you're on a white background (email). Once it's done charging I'll take it off and let it cool down and see if it's still there. "

" My Pre has that same problem, but in the bottom right... I didn't notice it until I got home because on colorful or complex images or backgrounds, it wasn't as noticeable. It really stands out though in chat/sms and Sprint TV. "

" I have the same discolorations - if anyone goes back to the store and they get a new one please post it. "

" Same problem here. I just got home and started messing with it and noticed yellow spots in lower left corner. "

" Sadly, I have the discoloration thing going on too. Yellow spot in the bottom right hand corner. I'm subscribing to the heat theories, as it only happens when a) it's charging and 2- I've been using it for a while. "

Well, while I was on way to and at work I decided to give this thing a workout. Ran the battery dry twice while playing movies and pandora and some other things. I have put full charges on it twice and have no issues as are described here, nor have I since saturday when I got it. Guess I a lucky one...

Very good. Great to hear. Hopefully this is an isolated patch of a specified Lot that were produced at the same time. Otherwise its just a crap shoot because there are numerous reports. Maybe the ones having problems had their Pre's manufactured on a Monday and yours on a Friday. :)

That just look like backlight bleed and will only be visible when the screen is black. Unless you look at black screens a lot I don't see why that would bother anyone.

Hopefully all these little issues will be fixed by the time it comes to Verizon. I really want one.

Why do you settle for Verizon's high prices. They are the most expensive cell phone company in the US yet the have the most customers and I find that weird.

Believe me I hate Verizon... but every other phone company sucks when it comes to coverage.

20% discount, so they're perfectly fine for me. Plus their coverage is second to none. With AT&T, I couldn't even get a signal in my own house.

The thing is Sprint is a lot cheaper and doesn't charge you for everything like Verizon does. They also use the same network technology and Sprint has free roaming on verizon or alltel network. I have never seen my phone roam but since you can use the Verizon network for free why would I want to pay Verizon high fees. Even with 20% discount I will end up paying more with Verizon. I currently have 27% discount with Sprint.

My job offers 19% discount with Verizon but it still works out to be more expensive because their data plans are not cheap. The Family plan I have with Sprint cost 129.99 and I receive 27% discount. A similar plan with Verizon with less features cost $159.99

Responses RE: "light leakage" from above link at everythingpre.com

" Vellie, are you saying that circular splotch (circled in red on the pic) is light leakage? If so I would disagree...the whole bottom edge of the screen appears a bit discolored, but I took that to be light leakage, and frankly that doesn't bother me at all. It's that circular splotch that bothers me.

I use SMS a lot, and that white circular splotch that I circled in the pics shows up pretty prominently as an ugly yellow splotch on the white SMS screen. Quite annoying, and not something I'm in any way happy about on a phone that I just paid $330 (after tax & before rebate) for.

I'm no expert, but my friend's Pre doesn't have anything like that ugly splotch, and when Sprint gets some more Pre stock I am going to try to return mine for a new device that will hopefully be splotch free. Like I said I don't mind the light leakage along the bottom edge, it is the ugly circular splotch, which I'm quite certain is separate from the light leakage, that bothers me. "

" I can confirm that the spots on my screen are NOT light leakage. I'll try to get pictures today. The reasons I say this is that:

They are often disconnected from the edge of the screen, independent splotches (leaks would come in from the sides)

They do vary with how long the device is being used (get more noticable over time)

the discoloration seems to correllate with the heat

most importantly: on an all white screen, bad splotches show up yellow. Definitely NOT a result of light leak. "

" I agree with 54... the severity of my splotch is directly related to how long I'm using the phone, and if I'm currently charging it.

I brought my Pre into a Sprint Corporate Repair Center, and they took a look at it. They said that they weren't going to replace mine, since their demo phone had the same thing, albeit less noticeable. After ten minutes of bitching at the guy, he said he'd call me when they get more pres in, to replace mine.

I definitely don't want the phone if this is going to be an ongoing issue. "

    • When will the Photos app be updated to remember the window size and position when reopened? They addressed this issue in a 2024 version of the app (though I can't recall the build number). Unfortunately, after that specific version, the problem persists! Please prioritise this fix in your K2 schedule. Additionally, the Snipping Tool has lost the ability to capture the Windows Taskbar starting from the 2024 version!
    • Same, never saw it on Android or iOS. Guess only some people got it *shrugs*
    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
