[O2] Enable iPhone tethering for free and without Jailbreaking.

Recommended Posts

Just tried it. Works perfectly. :) Remember to follow the instructions at the foot of the site to re-enable MMS. The tethering option still stays in place - instead of "Set up Internet Tethering" you have the option of just turning it on or off. :)

Thing is...

Carriers can detect the difference between mobile browsed data and data coming from your computer through a tether. There might be additional usage charges here so browse carefully until you get your first bill!

Enabled this on mine all the same ;)

Incorrect. O2 have already confirmed via Twitter they don't have the systems in place to detect the difference between data from a phone or from a computer. The only way they know is by the amount of data being transferred. If it's excessive (like watching BBC iPlayer etc) they will contact you and tell you to cool it.

Just don't use it excessively and you won't have a problem. :D

Out of curiosity... apparantly this method uses the APN of wap.o2.co.uk... everything else on the iPhone uses idata.o2.co.uk.

Wouldn't they be able to see you were accessing wap.o2.co.uk and potentially charge you for that?

I changed all my APN settings back to idata.o2.co.uk etc and still have tethering working.

It says to do that at the bottom of the web page. I had to do this also as it reverted everything back to wap.

PS: O2 UK users please double check your network settings after installing the new profile, as I needed the following settings in order to get MMS working:

Cellular data

APN: idata.o2.co.uk

Username: vertigo

Password: password

Visual Voicemail

(same as "Cellular data")

MMS

APN: idata.o2.co.uk

Username: vertigo

Password: password

MMSC: http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002

MMS Proxy: 193.113.200.195:8080

MMS Max Message Size: 307200

Oops its all going ###### up for me. Loss of network interface on my Mac. Pluggin in via USB doesn't recognise a new interface and even though over BT my iPhone says its tethering, there is no connection on the Mac.

Hey, not that I don't believe you! But do you have a link? Thanks :)

For those on O2 UK Pay & Go, here's my working Tethering Profile.

Save it as O2_UK_PayGo.mobileconfig (without any other file extension), and e-Mail it to yourself on your iPhone.

Once you've done it, go into your general settings, scroll down to Profile and it should show up - I had tried with Contract settings, so had to remove those before Tethering would work...

Hmm, not unless I search through the Twitter history to try and find it.

Indeed.

My opinion of O2 has gone down dramatically.

This is also what you get when phones are exclusive to one network (I bet if all the others were offering the iPhone, we'd see some good tethering deals, if any at all being required!)
