What is wrong with the 32-bit version may I ask? I run Firefox 32-bit in Vista x64 fine, why you even need a 64-bit browser? I mean seriously, I don't get it?

EDIT: However, should you still desire 64-bit Firefox please try here.

Faster!

safer!

if it wasnt for the stupied flash ,i would had already moved to firefox x64

Thanks to all for the above links. :)

I am surprised that there is no flash support for x64 though!

Who is dragging their heels?

Adobe, they couldn't be bothered. However, they are working on 64-bit support for Linux so hopefully that means 64-bit support for Windows and OSX is also in the pipe lines, however, how long till they release anything is anyone's guess...

Last I heard, Flash x64 was going to be due out a few days after Duke Nukem Forever.

Adobe are looking to do a 64bit Win Flash 10, it's written on their website. However, as with most large corps, the 'work on/planning' timeframe are as ambiguous as those 'Copying files' dialogues in Vista.

With HTML5 flash (for video) wouldn't necessarily be needed but that's a long way off being implemented in many sites I think.

Apart from Flash, what else doesn't work? I don't need no stinking Quicktime/pdf/avi plugins, just google talk.

Yeah, there's been a message on their site about them "looking to do it" for five years now.

It just isn't a priority when 32-bit browsers work fine and the 32-bit support isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Most likely Adobe's code is a huge ****ty mess (it shows in their software) as well, which makes the work even harder and more expensive.

Well, there's the Microsoft plugins. Windows Media, .NET, Silverlight, etc. Their explanation is just "we couldn't be bothered, just run the 32-bit version."

How is it safer?

64Bit doesn't offer any extra security over 32Bit by itself (Some extra security features that a 64Bit OS offers can be taken advantage of by 32Bit apps, and Firefox takes advantage of them)

Add in the fact that the Firefox codebase isn't 64bit compliant (there's still lots of code that assumes it's always running on a 32Bit OS/CPU), so I wouldn't use it myself (It'll be buggy, you might not run into bugs often, but when you do stuff will break)

From an earlier post of mine:

[...] 64-bit can end up increasing the testing burden for [browser makers]. Plus the deployment issues (imagine Mozilla offering a 32-bit and 64-bit download; how many regular users know if their system is 32-bit or 64-bit?) (not to mention all the issues that this would create with Mozilla's addon community with addons that have compiled components!)

So don't hold your breath; nobody really has any incentive to rock the boat here, esp. since there isn't much tangible benefit to going 64.

Browsers have become a sort of a platform (esp. Mozilla with its extensibility and huge addon community), and so a lot of care have to be taken with things like this.

Edit: Oops. I meant to post this in a different thread!

    • It is such a shame. I used to really respect Neowin's articles.
    • So.... slower fixes and slower security updates are preferred? I mean, there is no goldilocks zone here until it can literally update without ever needing a restart, and even then I'm sure someone would complain.
