Does anyone have any recommendations for a good wireless router? I currently have a Linksys WRT45G that fails and drops connections every hour or so requiring it to be unplugged and plugged back in (both wired and wireless). This is getting annoying, and I figure it is time to replace the router and ditch this one.

I am looking for something that is under $100, and preferably under $80, had good configuration options (including the ability to install custom firmware) and provides good signal strength. Average distance for a user from the router in the house is usually about 35 - 40ft away and two floors up (router is located in the middle of the basement, laptops are usually used in the bedrooms.) The house also has a steel frame construction and is covered in brick... which doesn't help the signal at all.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

Maybe your router is a POS because it doesn't exist? ;) There is no such thing as "WRT45G" there is a 54G.

Why don't you put some 3rd party firmware on the current 54G you have, and then see if it drops connections, etc.

What version of the wrt54G do you have v1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, etc..

Eh, same difference. I think (or hope) you know what I meant. :p

I am actually looking for a new router anyways, since I plan to move this one to the vacation house. I'm not at that house often, so I don't care if it continues to suck. I need a new router for my main residence.

I have the WRT54G v8 with v8.00.0 firmware.

Well I would suggest you put dd-wrt on it

As to a new router, whatever you choose I would pick something that supports 3rd party firmware. The wrt54GL would be a good choice.

Hello,

I have had good experiences with a Buffalo Technologies Wireless-N Nfinity Dual Band Gigabit Router and Access Point, Model # WZR-AG300NH. They are no longer manufactured, but you could look around for a used one. Doesn't run DD-WRT, though.
