The Perfect home mail server, OTA sync and push mail solution?

Recommended Posts

Hope Im not breaching any rules.... please remove this post if I am, I dont mean too!!!

Through these forums, Ive stumbled across a great Mail Server app called SmarterMail... Their free version allows users to setup their own mail server, which I thought would be great for WHS. Reading about the product further, their new version, currently in Beta (v6), is capable of providing full contact/calender/mail sync to a variety of devices including smartphones and the iphone, and many others. Not only this, but it can also provide push email to these devices. I feel this would be a great alternative to hosting packages, such as Exchange, that for multi user, can be costly and limiting.

However, this extra sync functionality will only be made available on their Enterprise package, which is for 250 users @ $499, and also requires the purchase of their Active Sync pluggin which will not be made available with their free version. I think this is a real shame, as this solution would be perfect in the form of a home package, say 10 or maybe 5 user license, with full active sync & push email facilities. This way those with home servers, or even XP, can equip themselves with their own mail server, mobile email and sync solution.

Ive created a thread on their forum, in an attempt to drum up interest in the hope of persuading them that this could be a very lucrative market, which I feel they should at least consider.

Check out the capability's of the product, and imagine it on your server... If you would like to offer support, please post in the following thread... I will be contacting the developers over the weekend to see if I can persuade them to a least look at what I think is an opportunity they should look into...

    • WUT?! Tell us you've never built desktop software without telling us you've never built desktop software... The chromium rendering engine is the content-rendering engine for "chromium-based browsers," but that does NOT mean there's a full-on UI underneath that is somehow bloating these products. The bloat is from the additional UI components that the browser vendor (Vivaldi) is adding atop the base package. Most chromium browsers customize the default skin/theme of the overall package so there's absolutely zero added overhead; it's really just a different CSS-based theme pack. Vivaldi, however, adds more than just a different skin; they add built-in extensions (that are managed by other built-in extensions), add other customization modules, and all kinds of other bloat -- and these add-ons are EXACTLY where the resource-hogging stems from. The mere fact it's a chromium-based browser has no impact on the matter. Lastly, power users literally DO notice resource-intensive applications -- they'll even be familiar with tools and widgets that expose those measurements the way only a power-user would! General consumers, however, would simply remark that their rig is sluggish and probably outdated and blindly upgrade to whatever the salespeople are hawking at the local computer store. General consumers wouldn't even upgrade their existing computer cuz they wouldn't know how to!
    • Nope, they just removed the game from sales.
