James Cameron's Avatar in 3D

Recommended Posts

Everyone over twitter generally loves the clip they saw :)

EDIT:

The Avatar panel is about to begin. Fox head Tom Rothman has come out, and is describing this as a once-in-a-movie-executive’s-life experience. The technology, as amazing as it is, he insists, “is resolutely in service of plot and character.”

James Cameron emerges, and says he’s going to “speak from the heart…I’m a great fan of other worlds…It’s a great privilege to present what I’ve been working on. It’s a privilege to share this first with Comic-Con.” He talks of being trapped in his home town of Chippawa, Canada (“with a population of half of the people in this room”) where he’d dream of Bradbury and Asimov as a child. He dedicates this movie to his 14-year-old self, “dreaming of adventure.”

He’s now stepping away for the 25 minutes premiering at Comic-Con. (“WE LOVE YOU!” says a man in the crowd.) Then he asks: “How many of you ever wanted to go to another planet. Are you ready to go to Pandora?”

August 21st is Avatar Day

James Cameron has returned to the spotlight. The Avatar panel just finished at the San Diego Comic Con and CB’s own Katey Rich should have a full report on everything she saw there soon. In the meantime, we wanted to let you know to mark your calendars. Circle August 21st. Write the word “Avatar” on it.

Cameron announced during the Avatar panel that on August 21st, they’re planning an unprecedented event. Rather than simply teasing his movie with the usual assortment of internet trailers and television spots, they’re inviting everyone into IMAX theaters all over the world where a full fifteen minutes of Avatar will be shown to hungry audiences in 3D. This isn’t just some cool press event happening in New York or LA, it’ll play on that day in IMAX theaters all over the world. Prepare to have your mind blown.

The first trailer for the Avatar video game will also debut that day. Maybe it’ll be good, but there’s no chance it’ll be as good as whatever it is that Cameron has to show us. See you at an IMAX theater, on August 21st for Avatar Day.

Official Plot Synopsis: In the epic action adventure fantasy AVATAR, James Cameron, the director of Titanic, takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination. On the distant moon Pandora, a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption, discovery and unexpected love ? as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization.

The story?s protagonist, Jake Sully, is an ex-Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. In order to participate in the Avatar program, which will give him a healthy body, Jake agrees to travel to Pandora, a lush rainforest environment filled with incredible life forms ? some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also the home to the Na?vi, a humanoid race that lives at what we consider to be a primate level, but they are actually much more evolved than humans. Ten feet tall and blue skinned, the Na?vi live harmoniously within their unspoiled world. But as humans encroach on Pandora in search of valuable minerals, the Na?vi?s very existence is threatened ? and their warrior abilities unleashed.

Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na?vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies in the real world, controlled by a human driver through a technology that links the driver?s mind to the Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Moreover, he falls in love with a young Na?vi woman, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched by her ferocity in battle.

As Jake slides deeper into becoming one of her clan, he finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Na?vi ? forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.

Conceived 14 years ago and over four years in the making, AVATAR breaks new ground in delivering a fully immersive, emotional story and reinvents the moviegoing experience.

Is this anyhow related to M N Shyamalan's The Last Airbender?

Reading the thread would prove to be IMMENSELY beneficial before making a stupid post again.

I had no idea what this was about, now my interest is slightly piqued, I'm now looking forward to seeing what it'll be like.

This will be Star Wars Meets Terminator Meets Aliens in terms of Technical Achievement!!!

Are you going to say its Oscar worthy?

I can see this being put up for effects actually

First off: This is like no other movie you have ever seen. It's ambitious, and entirely original, full of digital effects, flawless executed, in an entirely imaginative world.
At the AVATAR panel, this **** is bonkers! Coolest **** ever! Watching James Cameron speak
Avatar is going to be huge. James Cameron has spent some time on this thing. Footage looks awesome
Just finished watching a full 25 minutes and holy **** it was phenomenal, just amazing. It does indeed look like nothing you've ever seen, it is groundbreaking, it looks incredible. Every single second in this looked real. And most of it was a completely CGI created universe that does not at all look CGI. It is truly amazing!
HOLY **** AVATAR WAS AWESOME!!!
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • This sounds like underneath the nice marketing spin, either someone at Adobe got tired of their lazy devs and asked Microsoft to train them to help sort Adobe's old spaghetti code to make it go faster, or Microsoft wanted Adobe's crap to run better on Windows to make it look better against Apple, so they offered to intervene. Either way, GOOD.
    • My favorite file manager for Windows 11 finally gets a long-requested feature by Taras Buria Files is among the best File Explorer alternatives for Windows 10 and 11. This free app is packed with all sorts of features and conveniences, but there is one crucial feature that is still missing—Tree View. Fortunately, the latest update in the Preview channel finally delivers it. With version 4.1.4, which is now available for download in the Preview channel, developers implemented Tree View, a new mode that displays folders in an expandable hierarchy. Windows 11's stock File Explorer always had this feature, but it was nowhere to be found in Files until now. Starting with the latest preview update, you can expand each drive and its nested folders without leaving the current location and then open the folder you need in the main view. To try Tree View in Files, update the app to the latest preview version, then click the small arrow next to a drive to expand its content. The developers say they are rolling out Tree View in Preview first to gather feedback from users and improve the feature before bringing it to all in the stable channel. In addition to Tree View, Files 4.1.14 improves the Windows Fonts folder. You can now preview each font directly in Files with no need to open the built-in font viewer. For now, these two features are only available in the Preview channel. For those using the stable release, developers recently released version 4.1.3, with improvements for the built-in tag system, on-demand folder size calculation, and plenty of various fixes. You can check out the full release notes here. You can download Files from the Microsoft Store (paid version) or its official website (free).
    • Who is paying for this 30x scale-up? Its sounds expensive.
    • Millions of users to benefit from Windows 11's new performance boost on Adobe Photoshop by Sayan Sen Despite the advent of AI-generated imagery, Adobe's Photoshop remains one of the most popular tools on this planet. Adobe does not have a publicly reported total user count but it's probably not wrong to assume there are millions. As of 2025, Adobe Creative Cloud has had approximately 41 million paid subscribers, many of whom likely use Photoshop. In addition, more than 166,000 companies worldwide are apparently also using the app. These figures are according to a very recent report by SQ Magazine. Out of them, it is fair to assume that many are probably running Windows. As such, there is good news for these users as Microsoft has announced Photoshop is getting a big 20% performance boost on x86-64 (AMD64) systems and a 13% bump-up on Arm devices. This is definitely great news for them as many have complained about the slow performance and general sluggishness of Photoshop on Windows 11 ever since the advent of the latter back in 2021. If you are wondering how Microsoft managed to do this, the answer lies in a combination of compiler-level optimizations and a technology called Sample Profile Guided Optimization (SPGO). According to Microsoft, Adobe worked closely with the company’s Visual C++ team and adopted the latest MSVC toolchain enhancements together with SPGO to squeeze more performance out of Photoshop’s CPU-bound workloads. Unlike traditional Profile Guided Optimization (PGO), which requires developers to create special instrumented builds and run lengthy training workloads, SPGO gathers performance data directly from optimized release binaries. This means Adobe could collect real-world usage information which gives a major advantage to this technique, as companies could leverage data collected from actual customer workloads rather than only relying on synthetic benchmark runs. In theory, this should allow optimizations to better reflect how users interact with software in the real world. Thanks to this, there are improvements to code layout, function inlining, hot-and-cold code separation, and other low-level tweaks that help processors execute instructions more efficiently. Essentially the compiler is better able to identify “hot” code paths, those which are most frequently executed, and optimize them accordingly.
