Try out Replacer to do it automatically:

...or see this thread to do it manually:

Edit:

i wanna no why i get that error
If you're referring to the one you mentioned above, it's because shell32.dll is in use (like it states). You can try InUse from Microsoft, but I do NOT recommend it. If replacer didn't work for you, I highly doubt inuse will. Edited by hurting101
grab a xp cd, boot to it and choose repair console. then use the commands u used, it's just like dos :)

alright, i grab the xp and went to recovery console, but i asked for an Administrator password...what the hell, i don't have a password..HELLO..lol how to i fix this or get the password since i don't have one, i press enter and it says invalid pass..?

Use Replacer or Replace-IT, if that doesn't work, kill the explorer process with the task manager; choose New Task, browse to your edited shell32.dll, rightclick, copy, navigate to \system32\dllcache or \Servicepackfiles, RENAME (!) the old shell32.dll file, paste, then navigate to \system32, RENAME (!) your current shell32.dll to shell32.backup, paste the edited one, choose Cancel, in the New Task window you type "explorer" and press OK

Now a new explorer proces starts, reboot and you're done, all in 1 minute.

It is important to rename the original file instead of overwriting it. If you want, you can delete the old copy later, after booting.

Good luck

hi there, i am trying to replace my system32.dll file, so i go to windows in safe mode with command prompt and i type this "copy c:\shell32.dll c:\windows\system32"

replace system32.dll or shell32.dll? Lol

the reason is you cant overwrite it... go into windows\system32 and rename shell32.dll to something like shell32.bak

then u can copy c:\shell32.dll over to the windows\system32 dir no probs :)

lol, i did that but when i reboot, the new shell32.dll doesn't kick in, is there a backup copy of shell32 that windows keeps to replace it? and if, where can i find it? i tried using search but it didn't work?

For the i386 folder, you have to have SP1 installed. If you dont have it you either didnt install sp1 or you slipstreamed it.

For dllcache, just browse to yr system32 folder and add it in the address bar (its a hidden windows folder).

For system32, I think you are in trouble there :p
