what are the main benefits of digsby over pidgin?

It's Windows native. Doesn't need GTK installed.

Also the Digsby account means you only have to install/run Digsby, log in and you have all your accounts set up and ready to go.

I tried Pidgin after I got fed up with Trillian but I just didn't like it. Once you fix a couple of Digsby's annoyances (by avoiding the adware installer stub and turning off the background "research" process) it's brilliant.

Since Digsby went over to the darkside I haven't used them. (I know you can prevent installation of it but wow, they went waaaaay OTT with all that crap).

I've tried Voxox before and it was ok. I might have another look at it now though.

Are you talking about the link he posted? its just the installer that doesn't have all the crappy offers. I hate people that bitch about the installer, the link to the better installer is RIGHT under the main download link, and you only ever have to use the installer once because it auto updates.

Programs like daemon tools are as bad (or worse becuase they don't offer another installer like digsby) with their installers.

except that the main installer for digsby has like 5 adware/spyware prompts, and then digsby itself has a hidden default-to-on 'feature' to use excess CPU power or somethin to further add to the shadyness..THAT is unacceptable

It might not be acceptable, I agree, but you have the option to avoid the adware installer, and the research tool can be deactivated from the Help menu. After that it's smooth sailing. Updates are pushed automatically so you only have to install once.

In the terms of service[6] updated April 22, 2009, Digsby states that:

"You agree to permit the Software to use the processing power of your computer when it is idle to run downloaded algorithms (mathematical equations) and code within a process. You understand that when the Software uses your computer, it likewise uses your CPU, bandwidth, and electrical power. The Software will use your computer to solve distributed computing problems, such as but not limited to, accelerating medical research projects, analyzing the stock market, searching the web, and finding the largest known prime number. This functionality is completely optional and you may disable it at any time."

This insinuates that building a cloud using cloud computing is part of Digsby's business model and users may not be aware that this is part of the service they signed up for, since users are not told about it during download nor on the site. Rather, users must physically opt-out of having their CPU used for non-user initiated activity.

Hands down Trillian Astra. I was a Digsby convert for a while, but it couldn't do group chat and a few other key features, so thankfully when I'd finally been annoyed enough with Digsby to switch to something new, Trillian Astra had finally come a long way. Several builds of Trillian Astra later, and I don't ever plan on going back to Digsby.
