Can A 9800GTX+ Run On A Stock 420w?

Hey, I'm buying this computer:

The video card states it needs a 450w PSU to run, but I only have a 420w - would it be able to run off the 420w at all?

I wouldn't do it, buy a new PSU. It might be able to but it you push your PSU to the extreme.

Well from Nvidia it says

Minimum System Power Requirement (W) 450 W

Supplementary Power Connectors 6-pin & 8-pin

But another site says:

Power Requirements: With a single 9800 GTX installed, Nvidia recommends a 480 Watt PSU, for SLI operation a 750 Watt PSU, and for 3-Way SLI a 1000 Watt PSU is recommended. These recommendations are somewhat conservative, but Nvidia tends to make these estimates based on worse case scenerios along with the simple fact that all power supplies are not created equal. Remember that these are only guideline, and Nvidia keeps an current SLI compatible PSU list at SLIZONE.

So I guess if you want to safe, get a 500+ Watt PSU!

From a quick search and based on personal experience (I run a more power hungry GTX 260 off a 375W PSU comfortably) I'd say you *might* be able too. However, it depends on the quality of the PSU and what else is running off the PSU as well. So it's probably still better to wait for someone more knowledgeable to pop by and set the record straight on this :)

i had BIG troubles with my 9800gtx+ and the power supply (450w)

they key here is that the vga needs 24a in the 12v rail, look at yours if it doesnt deliver. buy a brand new one.

Don't believe any of that, they deliberately over estimate the power requirements to cover their arses. My GTX 260 has an absolute minimum of a 500W PSU (by Nvidia) yet it will run quite happily off my 375W PSU. The most important aspect is amps on the 12V rail, it could be 1kW PSU but if it doesn't have the amps it still won't run the card correctly.

Okay, what video card would my system be able to run fairly comfortably? What you see is what you get, I'm not adding anything to that system - just a card.

It would be hard to give recommendations since we don't have info about the PSU.

Also is the ATI Radeon HD 4550 included in the computer not satisfactory for you?
