Proper use of the Photoshop trademark

Recommended Posts

Hoover is a brand name... yet what do most people call the machines which sucks up dirt from your carpet? a Hoover!

don't see them going batsh** crazy about it. they love it for the free publicity.

I'd bet Adobe is doing this because they want to disassociate the product "photoshop" with any negativity that it get's when it's an image badly edited or has negative connotations. lol especially the images that are used with bad intentions.

they'd rather be associated with the best photo editors than the crappy or evil ones... lol basically.

Google also state they discourage the use of the term 'Googled'. This is standard practice - genericising a process with a brand name in it (i.e. photoshopping for 'image enhancement' etc.) dilutes the brand.

That said, when choosing the name for their new search product, Microsoft spoke of the importance of ensuring Bing is easily turned into a verb. It works both ways - having your trademark used as part of a generic process can bring publicity but it can also associate it with poor practices.

I'd call it a vacuum... Hoovering is what the girlfriend is good at.

Lol @ Brian.

I dunno about Microsofts plan to turn "Bing" into a verb. to 'Google' something rolls off the tongue. to 'Bing' something feels kinda awkward.

Maybe it will catch on.

but its always going to be 'photoshopped' for image enhancement/modification. No-one is ever going to say "Thats paint.NETed" or "Paint Shop Pro'd" lol

"thats so gimped" works :p

that's not meant for the general public. It are guidelines for companies using the Photoshop (excuse me: Adobe Photoshop Software) brand in their advertising or whatever.

Like for example, a company makes a plugin for photoshop and sell it. On their site they should say: this is a plugin for the Adobe Photoshop Software packet ...

Adobe couldn't give a toss about the general public making a verb of their brand, on the contrary, free publicity. However, other companies and advertising companies have to use it like it should be used as a brand. Otherwise you dillute your brand name.

*sigh* Once again, another one of the girlfriend things... You google a search term; you bing... Well. Yeah.

I remember reading about that a while ago. People went nuts at Adobe for being so anal about their brand.

I made this:

[yes it's photoshopped]

Did your image get the same response then as it got this time? A deadly silence.
