How to get much nicer 7-zip icons!

Recommended Posts

EDIT: The method in this post may not work with the newer versions (I had issues with 9.20 x64 on Windows 7) So, I recommend the 7-zip Theme Manager and Bruno Giordano's patching methods as they are much cleaner and user friendly (posted below) but I have left the method listed in this post just for reference.

***

A user called ZachHudock over at portableapps.com posted some much nicer looking icons for 7-zip to replace the really horrible looking ones!

Here's a preview:

I've managed to use Resource Hacker to replace them into the 7z.dll file which you can download here. Just replace the 7z.dll file in the 7-zip folder in Program Files with my edited one and hey presto, much nicer icons!

If you prefer a Vista/7 look to the icon design, ricktendo64 over at Wincert.net, has created a custom 7z.dll file that you can find here.

Credit to ZachHudock for designing the XP style icons and credit to ricktendo64 for creating the Vista/7 style 7z.dll. I've tested my 7z.dll files on XP, Vista and 7 with 7-zip version 4.65 and 9.06 Beta.

Let's hope the authors of 7-zip improve the UI for the next version!

Thanks for the replies guys, I was beginning to think that no one was interested! :p

I've found a few more custom icon edits over at MSFN and dA:

Again, kudos and credit to the original authors! :)

TqTL8.png7-Zip Theme Manager

Many users of the excellent file archiver 7-Zip criticized its nostalgic appearance. That's exactly "7-Zip Theme Manager", in short "7zTM", comes in and offers the following features:

Stylish...

  • Toolbar Themes - change the look of the toolbar of 7-Zip
  • Filetype Themes - change the look of archived files, for instance in Explorer
  • new 90 Toolbar Themes and 22 Filetype Themes integrated
  • new changing the SFX-icon (self-extracting archive) is now possible

Handy...

  • automatic or manual search of the 7-Zip installation folder
  • convenient activation of the Themes with just a click
  • Themes previews integrated directly into the program
  • multi-lingual user interface
  • online update for up to date Themes and features
  • possibility to create your own Themes
  • new supports 7-Zip 32-Bit and 64-Bit

Thanks for all the updates guys. Makes for a much nicer user experience with 7-zip with the 9.20 and x64 updates :)

Updated the first post to advise not to use my method as the Theme Manager and Bruno Giordano's patching methods are much cleaner and user friendly.

    • New PowerToys update fixes memory leaks and other issues by Taras Buria Another bug-fixing update is available for PowerToys version 0.100. After releasing version 0.100.1 with a bunch of bug fixes and patches, Microsoft pushed version 0.100.2 to address two important issues with one of Command Palette Dock's features. With PowerToys 0.100.2, Microsoft fixed the performance meter displaying incorrect values and memory leaks, which are particularly unwanted things in the current situation with overpriced PC hardware. Here is the changelog: Reverted a Performance Monitor dock refresh change that forced item refreshes on every metric update Fixed a memory leak in the Performance Monitor dock extension by reusing stable network upload/download band items instead of creating new list items on each refresh For those unfamiliar, Command Palette Dock is a relatively new addition to PowerToys. It is a taskbar-like tool that you can keep on top of the screen to pin various useful widgets, commands, and more. It can display time, weather, your PC's performance metrics, and more. Microsoft introduced the Command Palette Dock in March 2026 in PowerToys 0.98. Microsoft has dedicated documentation for Command Palette Dock, and you can check it out on the official Microsoft Learn website. You can update PowerToys to the latest version by going to Settings > General and clicking "Check for updates." Alternatively, you can download the installer from GitHub using this link. In other news, Microsoft is working on a new window-management utility for PowerToys. Called Alt Window Cycle, it will let you use the Alt + ` shortcut to switch between different windows in a single app. You can learn more about the tool here.
    • You did take leaf out of Trumps book already and had brexit - only to harm yourself. The same goes with this AI nonsense. The obvious solution for these companies is to move their head office to Brussels. I can see quite much irony there... 🙂
    • Thank gawd AT&T never worked with the US gov....
    • Wonder if they are trying to slow down Linux traction (not saying this is the only factor) in the consumer space. With the most pressure probably being steam deck/box, etc.
