Stonkwell Bogtrotter
Fed up of losing your "My Documents" folder when you re-install? If you can, create a 2nd partition on your HDD, or use a 2nd HDD. Then right click on My Documents, click properties then click Move. Chose you 2nd HDD or 2 partition, and move it there. Then, when you have to reinstall windows, just do the same again after install, point the fresh My documents link to your 2nd partition and your original My Documents will appear. I've done this for 2 years, and have never lost the folder, cus it's always been on a seperate partition/hdd :D Not much of a tip, but could save someones back in the future. Simple, but effective. #47
To access shortcuts from the run box: put shortcuts in my windows folder and use the run box to access them for example if the shortcut "wow" was in C:/Windows, all I have to do is type "wow" in the run box. Wallaby
A better way to remove the recycle bin from the desktop: Go to Run, Type "gpedit.msc" (without the quotes) A new window pops up. Go to User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Desktop. On the right you should open the "remove recycle bin icon from desktop" and press enable. So if you change your mind you just enable it again. A Tip is to put a shortcut in the startmenu first so you can acces the recycle bin from the start menu. Looks pretty neat. Just unzip and export the registry file...You can also remove Recycle bin from the desktop...Open regedit go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerDesktopNameSpace" and find the key "{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}" and delete it...enjoy Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/8153-the-tips-tricks-thread-post-only-tips-no-questions/page/5/#findComment-587514101 Share on other sites

Koolance
OK People, Here it is, the PIC TRICK. Ever need a program to rename all your digital photo's. You know, from DSC0001, DSC0002, ect.... I had over 1500 photo's named this way. And everytime I copied photo's to my photo directory from my camara, it always ask me if I wanted to replace an existing file. Because my camara always starts at the beginning whenever I download my pictures. If you have this problem try this: 1. Goto to your photo directory 2. Goto to Edit Menu and <Select All> 3. Goto to File Menu and <Rename> 4. Enter a title for you photos. Press <Enter Key> Example: SpringBreak06 Every picture in that directory will be renamed ----> SpringBreak06 (1), SpringBreak06 (2), SpringBreak (3), ect..... No matter what you name it, the format will be ---> WhatYouNameIt (1), WhatYouNameIt (2), ect.... Hope you like this one.... It saves me alot of time. fred65
Lovin this thread, the most unique tips i've ever seen... I just found out that instead of hitting DEL to delete a file, you can use CTRL-D!!! This also works to delete things in Outlook. To get a 'Apple Command' type cursor in MS Word, hit CTRL-ALT-+. This gives you a cursor like the Apple Command button Press CTRL-ALT-= to use a plus(+) sign as your cursor. Press CTRL-ALT-- (minus) to turn cursor into a minus In MS Word, type in 33NYC, then change it to Wingdings... Then add a 'Q' onto the front. Very freaky. null_
If you try to burn a disc using Windows Media Player 9 or Windows Media Player 10 and receive the error message "Interface not registered" upon starting the burning operation: - Click Start, and then click Run. - Type "regsvr32 wmp.dll" (without the quotes) and press Enter. If that doesn't work: - Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...stechnology=wmp and download the installer for Windows Media Player and re-install Windows Media Player. This issue can sometimes be caused by 3rd party disc authoring tools such as Ahead Nero. BLINDMENCANSEEGOOD
Actually, this is an obsolete key.2000 DOES properly detect the amount of cache you have but also, this key's functionallity was disabled after SP1. No matter what you set it to, you will not see an increase in performance. It is merely a placebo effect. And this is to those discussing it: <span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>IF YOUR PROCESSOR DOES NOT HAVE <span style='color:red'><span style='filter:glow(color=yellow, strength=2);height=1px'>ON DIE L2 CACHE</span></span> THEN THIS SETTING WILL BE EVEN MORE USELESS. AN EXAMPLE OF THIS WOULD BE THE SOMETHING LIKE THE PENTIUM II SERIES (I'm not sure if ALL P2s have no on die cache, but mine, and quite a few do have the cache sitting on the pcb).</span> A picture is enclosed of a P2 with OFF DIE cache. I think that you are partially incorrect and that Betadan was in the right ballpark. I went to the registry to find that their was no cache listed at all. I then changed it to 1024 because I am using a P4 with 1mb of L2 cache and I did notice a speed increase. Now when I go to the registry I see the proper cache present. You are correct in saying that if you are running a P2 and only have 512 L2 cache...changing it to 1024 won't help. But that is not what he is saying. He is simply saying that XP does not pick up your proper L2 reading and it doesn't.
