Its set after Nemesis so they dont have to stick to canon they can make up any old random bullcrap, im having nightmares just imagining Startrek WoW with its gaudy colours.

Yeah customising your own ship just like every starship captain in every trek film/series..........oh wait.

I hate them messing with iconic ship designs and putting sticky-out bits all over it and calling it a ship.

I guess you're afraid of change then. What do you expect them to do? Keep the same ship designs even though it's set so many years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis?. I'm a die-hard Trekkie and I welcome Star Trek: Online with open arms. It's about time someone made a decent Star Trek game. And in case you didn't know, it's an MMO-game. It's bound to have some similarities to World of Warcraft. That doesn't make it a bad game. Plus, the wonderful people over at Cryptic Studios are working closely with CBS to ensure that whatever they come up with stays true to Star Trek. I bet you didn't know that.

Anyway, closed beta sign-ups are now open! Head over to www.startrekonline.com and sign up for a chance to beta test Star Trek Online. I already submitted my application. Best of luck to everyone. :D

Cant believe any true trekkie could be excited about this game, they are going to make it for the masses rather than for the trekkies, it just happens to be an mmo that is startrek.

Oh believe me .. this is MUCH more for the trekkies and trekkers.

I've been talking with the Devs. :)

I've been following this for a long time, before cryptic took over actually when the original STO was ditched. These guys have a lot better ideas, the character customisation is better, then you can choose federation or klingon and ground missions etc. I can't wait for this tbh and this and SW: Old Republic might be the only games in the next year or so that bring me back to PC gaming as I've gone totally to console now...

fingers crossed :)

Fingers crossed indeed. I really hope this game is good because if it is, it will save Star Trek gaming.

screens i saw in the pc gamer magazine weren't very good, the uniforms look like tos uniforms with bits stuck on shoulders etc, there was even a image of an awful looking alien women, I don't know what kind of rubbish artists they employ....

There was even a picture of a sovereign class ship with bits stuck on the sides. So bad.

Here are two more Star Trek Online impressions, this time from PAX. First one is from Joystiq, and the second is from their sister site Massively. I'm going to message a mod to have the thread title changed to the official Star Trek Online deal since gamescom is way over, and we've included stuff from PAX and soon I'm sure TGS etc. Anyways, here are the links, enjoy:

Joystiq PAX STO Hands On

Massively PAX STO Phasers Locked

I forgot I can still edit the thread title lol so I did it, edited. :)

Ships between TMP era and TNG era which is what Nemesis was essentially in which was well over a 50 year difference the ships didnt look all that different. Ship design, bridge layout, LCARS, everything was similar, this looks like a ship a child would draw with bits stuck to it, this game is made purely for the WoW crowd so it looks all pretty and futuristic.

They are going to destroy Trek canon with this crap.

Jesus Christ, people!!

Look, two things:

1. It's an MMO.

2. You can build your own ship.

As an MMO, you must appeal to as wide an audience as you can to make money. Therefore, more customability the better.

And really, if it bothers you that much to fly an "ugly" or non-"cannon" ship... then BUILD YOURSELF A COPY OF THE ENTERPRISE!!

Ships have changed over the course of the series. Next Generation introduced the splitting of the saucer section. Some liked it,

some didn't. But the point is... if you don't like an updated ship then don't fly one. It's your game, play it YOUR way... but don't

tell me I'm not allowed to like it.

Sorry, I'm just sick of folks trying to dictate what -I- should enjoy. If you'd spend half your time worrying about how YOU

play the game instead of whining about how others are playing... you'd enjoy the experience a hell of a lot more.

The quote was taken, and retort given, in generalization- not to any specific person.

I'm really looking forward to it, I've never really done any proper "MMO's"

I do love Star Trek games, I play Star Trek Armada 2 all the time because I just love the universe and the ships. Elite force 2 was pretty good too, never completed 1 as I gave up on the crap loading times on the PS2.

I also never completed the last chapter of Bridge Commander as the Hybrid Ships at the end obliterate my Soveriegn.

But anyway, hopefully this will be good.

And as to it being Star Trek Cannon, Its like the Force Unleashed is to Star Wars, I think George Lucas said it was Cannon, but obviously the apprentice didn't jump off a cliff and re-spawned 20 times before getting it right, but the story behind it is what the cannon is linked to.

Since the announcement of the release date, I'm looking into getting this. But really need to get on the beta to really make up my mind.

Anyone know what happens when you lose your ship? Is it like Eve where you have to build up from scratch, or like wow you re-spawn and have to repair?

Space combat has me sold it reminds me of Starfleet Command 3 and Bridge Commander online multiplayer mixed into one with shield vectors and being able to transfer power around systems, im very apprehentious about the away team missions/combat though.

Shame my favourite ship the intrepid needs one of the highest ranks to be able to command, even though the Intrepid isnt a science vessel its a scout.

Star Trek Online may launch on Stardate 63554.5 (February 2, 2010), but beginning January 12, fans can beam into the open beta. The intergalactic guinea pig session will take place between January 12 to 26. Players interested in kicking the warp nacelles should head on over to startrekonline.com to enroll.

Punch it! Make it So! etc..! Woohoo!

I'm pretty sure you just get the ship back, but don't quote me on that. lol

    • Hello, It would appear so, according to https://finance.yahoo.com/news/how-to-hide-your-home-on-google-maps-apple-maps-204146687.html. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Hello, The Nvidia Founders Edition 3080 video card is approximately six years old, correct? Have you looked into whether replacement fans are available for it? Perhaps replacing those will improve cooling, especially when combined with cleaning the card's heatsink and replacing the thermal interface materials. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Hello, While ~104 GB of space may seem generous (at least compared to other e-readers which have 8-32GB), I feel at this price point the device should have a Micro SDXC card slot for expansion, particularly if it allows audio books to be installed and played. I hope to see more reviews of 6" phone-sized e-readers on Neowin in the future. It will be interesting to see how they compare. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Sandboxie Plus 1.17.8 / Classic 5.72.8 by Razvan Serea Run programs in a sandbox to prevent malware from making permanent changes to your PC. Sandboxie allows you to run your browser, or any other program, so that all changes that result from the usage are kept in a sandbox environment, which can then be deleted later. Sandboxie is a sandbox-based isolation software for 32- and 64-bit Windows NT-based operating systems. It is being developed by David Xanatos since it became open source, before that it was developed by Sophos (which acquired it from Invincea, which acquired it earlier from the original author Ronen Tzur). It creates a sandbox-like isolated operating environment in which applications can be run or installed without permanently modifying the local or mapped drive. An isolated virtual environment allows controlled testing of untrusted programs and web surfing. Sandboxie is available in two flavors Plus and Classic. Both have the same core components, this means they have the same level of security and compatibility. What's different is the user interface the Plus build has a modern Qt based UI which supports all new features that have been added since the project went open source. The Classic build has the old no longer developed MFC based UI, hence it lacks support for modern features, these features can however still be used when manually configured in the Sandboxie.ini. Sandboxie Plus 1.17.8 / Classic 5.72.8 release notes: Added added DisableCustomTitleOpt=[process,][y|n] to allow [#] sandboxie title markers on custom-titlebar windows (Delphi VCL, Qt, Electron) that were previously skipped to prevent DWM repaint CPU loops #5387 Changed updated bundled ImDisk driver to 3.0.2 #5419 Fixed fix Suppress logs for expected non-user SIDs #5422 SbieSvc.exe: SBIE2218/2219 error when run program as administrator #5417 fixed explorer.exe crashes in Application Compartment when Huorong Security is installed #5423 Download: Sandboxie Plus (64-bit) | 23.5 MB (Open Source) Download: Sandboxie Classic (64-bit) | 3.0 MB Links: Sandboxie Website | GitHub | ARM64 | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
    • Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth). Karenware has a number of interesting freeware utilities, too. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
